And the Palm Pilot said: let there be light

http://tenfourfox.blogspot.com/2014/12/ ... etely.html

I've started to really enjoy my Palm devices again. The Zire 72 and the Dana are getting regular use, and I just ordered a Centro I found cheap (unlocked GSM -- should work great with T-Mobile if I need it to). Today's smartphones aren't really PDAs in the classic sense.

A clever solution to an interesting problem, Classy! Well done.

I've been a fan of PalmOS for quite a while. In the late 90s, I used to enjoy debating the merits of my Newton MessagePad 130 versus the various Palm Pilot models that many of my colleagues used. Eventually, the smaller size, the ability of Palm devices to sync with the corporate email/calendar system (Lotus Notes), and Apple's termination of the Newton platform led me to acquire a Palm IIIe Special Edition . It was very cool to look at, with a transparent plastic shell, and it was very functional, especially when attached to a Palm Keyboard. I still have the IIIe SE and keyboard, though it's been a while since I fired it up.

I bought a Treo 700p as soon as it came out, and it was one of the best cell phones I've ever had. I even ran the Java version of the Opera browser on it. I still use it daily as a timer and alarm clock.

I wish you hadn't mentioned the Dana AlphSmart Wireless device. It sounds like it would be fun to play with, and I see one on eBay going for slightly more than I'd like to spend (counting shipping), but not too much more... :)
I love my Dana wireless. I wish there had been other Palm netbooks -- since that's essentially what the Dana is -- because the form factor is great. If you get one, I'll get you a copy of DanaWeb. EudoraWeb is more practical on the 68K Palms but you'll be impressed with what they got a Dana to do.

I tried Opera Mini on my Centro but it got as far as Installing... and stopped cold. I'm a little irked that the Centro won't run the hacked NetFront that's floating around (the Zire 72 will, and it's wonderful) -- it just crashes to the boot sequence -- and its version of Blazer appears to be hardcoded to use cell data instead of Bluetooth networking. If anyone knows a way around the latter, please advise.

Plua is the bomb for writing simple apps like this.

Treos and Centros don't like using non-cell networks. I considered getting one to supplement my T|X, but the lack of wifi made me ignore them.

I use a Bluetooth AP in those cases. The Belkin F8T030 seems to work well.

Bumping due to a Treo conquest. My solution is probably just to swap SD cards and get a SIM adapter for internet usage.

Hey, I liked webOS... probably one of the few mobile OSes to do multitasking right, other than Maemo. Nowadays they can get the interface right (by way of hirng the designer) but there's details like multiple windows Android and iOS still can't manage with.

I really loved webOS too. The main problem was the hardware *sucked*.

Wow, the modern world has really not been kind to this because most sites (and I use privacy-oriented stuff) are using far stricter TLS, (like TLSv1.2, SNI,) which the little thing can't do.

It's a lot of work, though. Updating Classilla to SNI was a b*tch, and I really doubt I can squeeze TLSv1.1 into it (let alone v1.2).

A proxy in between could do the trick, but I haven't had much luck with Squid+SSL.

We had good results using the Simple Web Interface Link Library on a couple of projects at work, but it's probably not relevant for what you guys are talking about...

I actually bothered to check Wireshark on the simulator. SSLv3 only, jesus. Anyone who cares about security disabled that because of POODLE bites.
all other BSDs suck other than OpenBSD. love all ancient unix workstations!
