Not many people have. Apple didn't really know how to sell it and it was prohibitively expensive (starting at $10,000), and of the few people who bought it, not many of them knew what to do with it. It was very powerful for its class, though.

The real reason is stockholm was supposed to be named kalgoorlie, after the Australian city (since I'm half Aussie and I liked the name), but I couldn't remember how to spell it and the network administrator said, "well, just call it SOMETHING!" So that started the trend.

Apple did actually somewhat more to AIX. Besides the Shiner architecture support bits, both as BOS changes and some separate utilities, they also included unique AppleTalk and Apple Events implementations (and the developer tools needed), and in 4.1.5 added AFP over TCP.

I got a lot working on that ANS over the years, much more than I ever got A/UX to do, even though A/UX is far more practical as a workstation OS and runs on lots of machines. (I do like A/UX's merging of Mac OS and SysV, though, architecturally speaking.) But I agree if you just want to play with AIX, there are better choices.

How is BSD on your ANS? Do you have a video card in it, or just use serial?

No, I know that the Cirrus video chipset is not well-supported. I was just curious if you had Open Firmware set to use the PCI video card as the output port, and how well that worked with NetBSD.

I used a 7100 when I was the university's newspaper editor (with a beat up old Club Mac external SCSI drive), running 7.6 and QuarkXPress. When I convinced the Dean to buy me a brand-spanking-new 450MHz G4, he let me keep the old 7100, which I maxed out the RAM on, added a bigger hard disk, a 24x internal SCSI CD-ROM drive, a G3 (I think a 400MHz) and an A/V card, bumped it to 9.1 and christened it the (wait for it) "SR-7100." It sounds almost exactly the spec of yours.

It's still around, but I don't have anywhere to set it up right now; the 7300 and MDD G4 handle my OS 9 jones.

By the way, I hesitate to ask why your quad has both a FX4500 and a 7800GT in it. (Mine just has the 7800GT. I couldn't justify the Quadro when I bought it new in '06.)

That /is/ a very nice classic Indigo.

How is heat and ventilation with those two video cards? I imagine you've got no space left, and the quad does not exactly run cool.

The 7100 is a little bit of a pain for the RAM slots, but nothing is as bad as the Quadra 800 and its derivatives (840AV, 8100, 8500, 9500). Those cases literally draw blood. I only put up with my Q800 because, with its clock chip set to 40MHz, it is the fastest A/UX workstation available, and it cost me $FREE.

Although when you call it a "classic Indigo" it makes me affraid you're going to try to claim it as your own!

Chance eBay find. Battery even holds a charge, for all of thirty seconds, but it does. A little poky, but does well in 8.1, and came with RAMDoubler (almost required for any of the older Macs restricted to less than 128MB RAM). As you can see, compares in size well to an iPad.

$19K for a 800MHz V12 Fuel and 2GB memory ... mmmm (and then another $5k for the 900MHz card).
Good thing there's an education discount.

Does DiskWarrior work on 10.9? That's always been my go-to utility for fixing HFS volumes, though of course I'm still in 2009 with 10.4.11.

There is a little yellow piece that's actually a snap-off battery. That's the "snap hat" -- it's the Fuel's PROM battery, and it's to the left of the memory slots. It snaps off with a little bit of effort. Search around here for replacing the Fuel battery and it's the same process.

The RTC is another Dallas part. It's the Dallas-labeled chip above the PCI slots.

Take out the duct while you're working on it. It's not that hard to remove and replace, and it's much less of a headache when it's out of the way.

No, I haven't, not on this one. I'm toying with doing it on my 1400, which has PCMCIA slots, so I could reverse it later (the 1400 is a lot easier to work on, too).

If you're sharing to Windows, just use SMB -- you'll save a lot of headache.

But, if you're determined to try, you might throw in an -alldirs and/or -32bitclients, since I don't know how good or current Windows' NFS client implementation is.

Well, I got the core to compile on the G5 and did some horrible hacking on the Cocoa code to make it at least start on 10.4, even if none of the dialog options work. I suspect there are some endian problems lurking to be found, but it does at least come up and try to check options (before, since I have no kernel file, it fails).

However, I don't have A/UX 2.0 disks here, just 3.1.1. If someone wants to play with this, PM me.

Well ... I could maybe get that to work with the AltiVec registers, which are 128-bit, but that would entirely exclude G3.

I see the problem, though, because now that I think about it the Apple 68K emulator on Power Macs doesn't even try to emulate the FPU -- it emulates a 68LC040 and uses the internal SANE routines to handle FP.

Looks like I need to repull in any case, since I must have grabbed the rev right before that push. I also see the be2native() function lurking at the bottom of coff.c I'll need to fix immediately ...

If anyone has a kernel file I can use to test, I'd appreciate it -- as I say, all I have is A/UX 3.1.1, though it is running on a real live Q800. I just want to make sure the initial emulation comes up even though it will immediately freak out, unless you know that an A/UX 3.1.1 kernel will at least start to some state.

... and, now that I've had a more indepth look at fpu.c, I'm an idiot. You're using long double, which presumably compiles to 80-bit FPU registers on x86. That should map to 128-bit software double-doubles on PowerPC, so I just need to change the mapping for the machine representation.
