Admit it: you're just trying to beat pentium at this AS/400 game. But, speaking from ignorance, isn't there a way to do a service boot if you're at the physical console? All the RS/6000s I've dealt with, you just turn the key to service mode modulo booting from recovery media. I'd be surprised these don't have such a facility.

I don't know the backplane you're connecting it to but those look like a standard pSeries drive tray. You may or may not need to get a different interposer board. Those are inexpensive enough you could buy one and see.

However, for the record, my POWER6 p520 uses SAS for its RAID (with the RAID enablement card), not parallel SCSI.

That I don't know, I've only used the SAS backplanes on "recent" kit. However, that interposer does look like it has the right connector on the drive side, at least. I believe the 9111-520 will only allow two backplanes if you have an external SCSI port (I think the -550 can take them both internal).

The mirroring backplane is like it says; it mirrors writes to the primary backplane. I've never used one of these, however, so I can't really advise you there. My POWER6 just uses conventional RAID 5.

I *think* you can share the vdisk, but tbh, I've never set up a system like that. At worst it will just refuse to do so, so there's no harm in trying.

Not that I recall on my Colour Classic; there's just a master power switch. Amy, you need to get the board recapped and that should fix it. Alternatively, the motherboard from an LC575 will fit, though it doesn't match with the rear ports punchout.

It seems to be a problem mostly with the '030 Macs. Earlier systems and '040 Macs and later don't seem to suffer to near this extent, other than the infamous iMac G5 "troubles."

Ah, thanks! That leads me to http://buyee.jp/ via a banner on the Yahoo! Japan page, which presents the same auctions within an English site. Helps a bit, even if the listing contents aren't translated. Their model is to bid on your behalf and then arrange shipping, so this might have some general appeal depending on the rates.

FWIW, I use Rinkya for this, since I import a lot of Tomy Pyuuta (Tutor relative) games and peripherals. Their commission is not cheap by any means, but they ship fast and they're very easy to work with.

My 8203-E4A has such a card (IBM calls it a "RAID Enablement Card", FC 5679). The card is not required for the system to boot from SAS; it just won't be RAID. I'm not sure if the auxiliary cache card is sold separately but I have both installed.

I compiled TN5250 on my AIX POWER6 to connect to PUB400. That seemed appropriate.

Not just consoles: Probe did a lot of stuff for 8-bitters too. I remember their Commodore 64 games, especially Smash TV, which I played a LOT.

I remember Sculptured mostly for their Apple II and Atari ports (I actually played Beach-Head on the Apple II, though it was a poor reflection of the C64 version) but they were most prolific on the SNES.

At least Fujitsu still has SPARC, and there are still SPARC things around.

I don't see AIX going anywhere because Power is still a very viable alternative architecture, but HP-UX might be the next one to drop. It's lost its relevance because HP tied it too tightly to Itanic, the fate of which they were unable to fully control. If PA-RISC were still a thing it might live longer.

getaddrinfo couldn't be resolved?? That's a pretty bad sign. I don't remember exactly where that lives, but it should be either libresolv or libsocket. What do those look like?

My daily drivers are a Quad G5 (usually in Reduced, but it runs fine, if loudly sometimes, in Highest), and a 1GHz iMac G4. The G4 is certainly poky, but it's decent. I don't feel that the G5 is terribly slow, personally.

For laptops, I alternate between an i7 MBA and a 1.33GHz iBook G4, but the MBA admittedly gets more use because it's smaller and lighter and has better battery life, though the iBook still manages around 3-4 hours under modest usage.

I'm displeased the 11" MBA was discontinued, because the current small MacBook leaves me really cold.

Even the water-cooling models make a low frequency buzz not unlike a Keurig coffee machine.

I don't notice this in Reduced mode, but my unit has a refurbished LCS.

These monsters are too big to ship, and I have no way of testing them, but they need to be gone. I got a number of them as part of a estate cleanout. The 100 is not a true VAXstation; it's more of a overgrown graphics terminal that connects over Unibus. If you want a couple, notify me THIS WEEK and make arrangements for local pickup (greater Los Angeles area). Units that are not spoken for will be dragged to the recycler this weekend.

I'm pretty sure they're just the boxes. I do have some cables with them, but I don't know if they're fibre, and I don't recall getting any cards.

Actually, I'm thinking I'll keep that *one* as a spare. I have a PRO 380 in the house that allegedly boots Venix but I need to build it a cable (Mac video cables are the wrong gender). I do have a VR201 and an LK201AA, and the unit powers up and makes happy noises and the LEDs just say "no monitor" so I bet it works. The pedestal PRO 380 will be my hedge bet.

There are several spare 380s, two Rainbow 100s and a DECmate II, and Jim says he wants those also, so he's welcome. All that is left is the RL02 and the big PDP, which I might keep as a conversation piece.

Jim got the lot yesterday. We also found a big box of paper tapes and diskpak HEPA filters. Good haul for them, and my storage unit is a lot emptier.

Meanwhile, I have a cable on order for that PRO 380.

But, but, systemd! It does your dishes now! You just have to use a binary dishwasher configuration file. It's much better except that now your dishwasher is pwned by an exploit in systemd's dishes subsystem and has decided to spray your wife with jet dry agent whenever she walks by it. Which is totally sexy except the chemical burns.

I've started building things on my 9000/350 (HP-UX 8.0), mostly just stuff that I need that will work with HP's benighted built-in cc (though this one seems to have the ANSI compiler option, so there is some hope).

So far I got gunzip, tcsh 6.06 and perl 4.036 running, which are even period-appropriate. I'm going to try my hand at Chimera (an old web browser) next.

If people desire binaries for their own 68K HP9K, advise and I'll put them somewhere.

I guess I should try bootstrapping an old gcc at some point.

It only has X11R4, but I managed to get Chimera and xgopher running.
