I've got a 4xx around here I need to see if it's still working (and, if so, what's on it). But I love how the 300 series are built like tanks. I've got a 319C+ in storage I should dig out, too, but it doesn't have a hard disk or any other storage.

Anyway, the picture enlargement (as pointed out by David Collins himself, he being the current curator of the famous HP Museum) does clearly show it is an E55. This is not a frequently encountered unit these days.

Java, especially AOT compilation, does indeed work on a similar scheme.

Doesn't look like all of the systems were complete. If they were, $3000 would be quite a steal. As it is, you might be able to get a couple systems out of what was there.

There aren't many things built for PowerPC BeOS. There's a fair bit for x86, but PowerPC got unloved even though BeOS could run on many contemporary Power Macs.

I've tried porting a few things, and some work (I have a 133MHz BeBox). Mine came with the Metrowerks compiler and I was able to build some command line tools, but I haven't tried to build a full-blown BeOS app with it yet.

Obviously the situation is even worse if you have a grey Hobbit-based prototype.

I just use rpm.

I don't really see it as different from PNaCl and asm.js, and about as likely to get traction on a large scale (i.e., not). Trying to compile to asm.js as a target is ridiculous even with Emscripten, and wasm isn't intrinsically going to do any better. In addition, just like asm.js, the parsing (even if binary) and validation steps alone are JIT, not AOT, and require lots of memory and compute time. These runtimes won't take off until efficient crossbuilding and deployment tools catch up, and they won't catch up until the runtimes take off and make it meaningful for compiler and build system authors to think about them.

No, wasm has support from all the major engines; I think it's just that Firefox is the only one to have it exposed and shipping.

What do those run? Surely not HP-UX (I haven't kept up with HP's product line after PA-RISC got axed, though).

As an Amiga, cool. It's clearly the most kick-@$$ Miggy you can get. I think the Xena will be a waste of motherboard again, though. Does anything actually do anything with it? Did anything on the X1000?

As a PowerPC computer, eh. The P50xx series are not exactly barnburners, and a decade-plus-old 2.5GHz G5 will crush the P5020 easily; see http://www.generationamiga.com/2017/03/ ... 040-64bit/ . Assuming their numbers are in any way accurate, the current implementation would not even get in the ballpark with the Quad until they get the P5040 on board and AmigaOS to support SMP. Note that I can't figure out from that graph whether they're comparing against the DC 2.5GHz G5, or the 2.5GHz G5 Quad. If it's the DC 2.5, that's even sorrier.

I'm not likely to spend the money until the P5040 is an option, because it doesn't really tick both the first two boxes for me yet. But I'm impressed at how far they've come.

PPC64 is that way also (32-bit instruction words, but 64-bit pointers and registers). Dan Julio was very helpful actually during the writeup. He was amused by me upgrading my S3000 with the L2+CPU from a S4000DX ("S4100") to make an "S3000DX."

The Xena clearly has potential, but I don't know if anyone has actually done anything to exercise that potential. It seems to facilitate custom I/O; it's channel rather than buffer driven, which would certainly make things like using it for SIMD or as a true copper more complicated. Is there anything out there that meaningfully uses it?

It just seems like a solution looking for a problem that no one wants to do the work for.

Similarly, another thing I forgot to point out is that the P50xx lacks AltiVec. The G5's VMX implementation isn't too flash compared to the 7450 G4 (it's basically the old 7400 G4 AltiVec design that IBM bolted on), but it's got it, at least.

I'm harping on its performance mostly because if I bought a new PowerPC computer, it would be to run NetBSD or some other still-supports-big-endian-PPC-Unix on it, not primarily AmigaOS (I have an A4000T) or MorphOS. It's not likely to be this until it has a chance of being faster than what I'm already running.

Mount it? It's not an ISO 9660 file system, it's actually FFS (which SunOS calls "4.2"). What were you trying to mount it as?

No, it shouldn't be a problem. OS/MP, which I use on my Solbournes, is a modified SunOS and it works fine with a burned disc. I think #1 is going to be the least amount of headache and if you're interested in old Unix workstations you'll need one sooner or later anyway. I use a Toshiba also, I forget the model.

My Solbourne system uses a SCSI2SD and I just used 2GB partitions. Much of the OS/MP installation procedure applies to SunOS since it's just a variant of SunOS. See http://www.floodgap.com/retrobits/solace/install.html

A 2GB partition is more than enough for every single thing on the SunOS disc. The Versatec package is optional, so just skip that and install everything else if it doesn't seem to be working. The packages on the SunOS 4.1 CD are just tarballs.

I don't know why it wants to be ID 3 unless it's something about that particular model. My SCSI2SD has two partitions, 0 and 1. That works just fine here.

I think they meant use whatever appropriate tool you have to write that BIN to the controller or EPROM, not to literally type that command.

I agree. Even though qemu is getting better at it, there is still no substitute for Classic, and Classic is probably the best single reason to keep a Power Mac around.

My iBook G4 also gets heavy use as a portable DVD player. With a hack to enable separate displays, it happily plays DVDs to any hotel display we connect it to. If I want to display it on an internal screen, though, I use a 17" DLSD G4, especially since I found firmware to make it region-free.

Seems like a reasonable assumption to me.

That happened to AIXPDSLIB. I've got some of it but not all of it, and almost none of the AIX 5 stuff. :/
