hi guys
A friend has an IBM Aptiva 486-DX2-66, he has the motherboard , the PSU , and the metal chassis, everything else is missing/lost/wtf.
If you need a new mobo, or a new PSU, because yours are defective, well here it is your chance to have it for cheap, you have just to shoot me a PM.

Ridiculous price, just shipping cost.

here, it's ~40-50 euro of shipping from Italy, in this case they make you to pay just for how big the parcel is, instead of how heavy it is.

of course, everything is always cheaper (or free) from other places, always

so, for that reason I am paying 50 USD from USA just to receive a flat cable + DIP40 adapter plus an eprom with the firmware, the total is 200g, small parcel, but I was asked to pay 120 USD for the total, where 50 USD are for shipping.

And I have checked the shipping agency price list to ship from italy to Europe/Zone1-5: no less than 50 euro, with a serious track-list, everything else can be lost, damaged, etc ...

So oh, my Netherlands, good grass to smoke , and great price when they ship, I am going to order some good grass (let me say no less than 1Kg ) from there

Probably there is another shipping agency in Italy?

There are many (including DHL and Fedex), and the price is the equal (oh well, Fedex can offer better and faster services, but the price is higher, so It was not considered), perhaps you can have cheap shipping, the question is: which quality ? Personally I do not ship anything without a track number and without ensuring the money of what is inside the parcel , which means money back to me, if they lose or if they make a damage, and You claim against me, especially if I am paid through paypal (1)!

Let me explain why

some time ago I shipped a workstation to germany, with a cheap shipping solution which (unfortunately) did not include tracking and assurance, and it happened they lost the parcel (or someone inside the shipping-agency stole it) and my customer claimed hard with paypal that I had to give money back to him, and so I was forced to do, which caused me a lot of troubles (2)

the conclusion: more than 400 euro gone lost, the money of the workstation, plus the money of the shipping. So I learnt the lesson: never ever I will ship anything for cheap , especially if payed through paypal, if you really really want cheap shipping you have to pay through bank money transfer and do not expect any refund in case the goods gone lost/damaged!

(1) paypal eats up to the 10% of the total and can block your credit card and bank account in order to get money to refund, and they do a lot of jam about that
(2) the account is completely blocked until they conclude their investigation, you have to trash a lot of time on the phone to explain wtf is happening, I use my paypal account for job purpose, so ... paypal is a fsck crap when you do not have a tracking number and an assurance

Paypal wants a tracking number, that service - registered mail - is not compliant to their "customers protection plan" , it means you can't prove you have shipped, so you will be forced to refund, and does not include an assurance, it means that if the parcel is lost … you have to refund your customer, and nobody will refund you, ergo it's a pain in the wallet if something bad happens.
Also, that parcel is for a smaller package , you can't ship an Octane front panel with a small-parcel, buddy.

For small-size package I was asked for 20 euro for that (I shipped a GameBoy ADV to France), including tracking number and assurance, which is quite compatible and reasonable price (the difference is +5 euro), while Moates , an USA company, asked me 50 USD because they want to use a safe service (fast delivery, full assurance, handled by Fedex), and I had to accept, because they do not provide other shipping methods. So I payed 50 USD for a small package of 200g.

BTW, you offered 40 euro for the total (goods + shipping), which - sorry - it's not acceptable.

Good luck.

Octane, Front plastic, Bezel

nongrato wrote: SNES cartiridge in a box is about the same size as an Octane's front flap

If you read what people is offering instead of claiming it's not cheap! I was talking about the whole plastic front , it is called " Bezel " in SGI doc, and it's not just the flap-door . The flap-front-door is quite the size of the SNES cart , while the whole Bezel (which includes the flap-door and blanks panels) is quite 3 times bigger (considering the volume), and so the parcel, and so the cost! BTW, through skipe my friend has made me informed he has already sold it out, and in any case he absolutely didn't want to separate the flap-door from the whole Bezel , also because it was a brand new part. He said the Bezel has been sold for 50 euro + shipping (including an IP30 blue bulb as gift) = 90 euro payed (including the 7% of fee to be payed to paypal and full assurance), not for 40 euro shipped!.

Good luck on ebay.

short free time, but I made a few progress: the debug processor protocol is almost completed (1), it will ( I hope ) help to develop and the the VDU, but … I am also tempted to complete the ROM emulator for the 68K board, which will speed up the uploads, providing a more comfortable development ambient.

oh, well, but I still have to do treatment to wood

(1) it has a shell
you can scan resources (2) on the remote TAP
you can read/write registers from/to the remote TAP
(2) something like …
how many devices do you have in your grid ?
how many classes per device ?
how many registers per class ?
and how many bits have these registers ?

currently the remote TAP is a server, I will implement the protocol on FPGA, and change the PHY protocol from tcp/ip to uart.
the code is almost done.

I used to use an R10K Indigo2 as an IRIX 6.2 build system. It was optimized for that task: no graphics at all, but a G160 fast ethernet board. Big, near-silent disk and 1GB RAM

Yes, this is the best solution, completely remote machine, a box attached to a lan cable, without GFX, with 1 Fast lan (1), serial console RS422 to RS232 to USB to ethernet through an RPI+FTDI232 backend, and a few rele installed in the backplane controlled by the RPI(2) with the purpose of resetting and switching on/off the machine on demand, in case of need. Oh, it's a good idea because the Indigo2 PSU needs to be physically unconnected from the 220V when the machine is turned off, so the rele will achieve that purpose without the need of unplugging the power cord .

I can't do it now because the machine is not mine, but … one day I will

(1) I do not know if Irix can support the lan-bonding, so I do not know if I could have 2 x Phobos G160 in this configuration, linux can do it. About the good reason why to do that, well … the G160 is 10/100Mbit/sec ~ 8Mbyte/sec considering the TCP/IP payload, while the GIO64 bus has more bandwith (and if you remove the GFX, there is a full bandwith available), up to 10 time the bandwith, so … in the Theory the lan-bonding with 2 ethernet cards is possible, I mean it has all the bandwith it needs. Ok, the ideal solution is … using fiber channel (FC), which is … hard to be found for Indigo2, and extremely expensive.

Just a good idea, for fast NFS :D

(2) RaspBerry PI + Arduino, or Arduino Yun, the complexity of that … is like a shield

hi guys
it's an hw debugger for MC68020 (Motorola), I got a special offer (~200USD shipped from USA ohhh California) for the CodeICE but just for the hw, I do not know anything about the software it requires to work, I know this equipment has an AUI/LAN port and a serial (RJ22 ? DB9 ? WTF ? Who knows), so the protocol goes through the lan, which is good and HOST independent!

interesting notes I have found from the brochure (CodeICE 68040 Aug96)

MWX-ICE for Microsoft Windows offers the same intuitive control and ease-of-use as the workstation version.

but I know the CodeICE control application is multi platforms, I guess { HPUX/68k, SunOS/Sparc, Windows/x86 }

MRI, DIAB, GNU, Intermetrics, and Greenhills compiler support

I wonder what "with GNU support" means … (GDB supported ? really ?)

Is there anyone experienced with these hw debuggers ?

p.s.
about the reason WHY? on the WHY? Oh Well, I have to confess my home made board is 68000-DIP, but … I have modified it to accept an Amiga-500 accelerator card, so It's possible to install a 68020 on it, and in this case … the 68020 is on a socket, so it's possible to remove the CPU, and install the CodeICE's pod in order to emulate the whole CPU processor, so, in short: Why On the Why ? 'cause it's machine porn :D :D :D :D

Oh well, it talks uart over usb-bulk-driven , and I can't believe it is working damn fast: at ~1Mbit/sec, 2 Banks of 64Kbyte have been written in a whistle X_____X.

How do you prove a "false positive" of the diagnostics anyway? Is it a sentiment of "I don't see anything wrong"? Because that logic is flawed unless you're 100% sure that you have exercised every functional unit of the hardware

Seneca said - only the long time can reveal the Truth - so, to know if something is well done, applying the concept to something you want to repair, you can say a repaired machine is well done only after a long and exhaustive test bench , when all the hardware features get probed, and probed for a long time, this satisfies the big numbers theorem, almost the probabilities to discover main defects

oh well, the same happens to the paints, I have seen cars repainted, they look well done just out of the garage, but ... 4 months later the paints begin to detach

about second hand bargains in computer science, my conclusion is: if it's something really serious, then 90 days of warranty gets now a reasonable motivation

Unfortunately.

e.g. the LCR meter I am still looking for (second hand? I hope).

just a note to me:

in case you'll be offered with S-R5650
you might need QLogic QLA12160 ,
it's dual LVD Ultra160 PCI card !

(thank you J for your tricks)

I am still locking for a solution, but have a priority inversion due to the fact I haven't found an Octane2 yet, and I am with the need to find other electronic tools & instruments, but, I will be back, sooner or later, to the SCSI BOX :D

I was looking for a completely different item (and absolutely not related to SGI  ), and I have found these cards

seller: sgiclearance (664 Purple Star on ebay)

he is located in Canada, and his Phobos boards are both boxed, so brand new

I have asked about the shipping to Europe (I asked "how much is to Italy?")
he said it costs 45 USD by Air mail.

Just to mention, tracking is not included and it may take weeks to arrive.
(so about "costs", italy to europe is not so expensive as argued here by someone … let me say!)

I do not need them, so, if you are looking for a good 10M/100M bit/sec Lan for your Indy/Indigo2
this might be your chance!
enjoy :D

last time I spoken with mr.Ian, my friend was looking for a second G160, and mr.Ian said he has just a few G130 and G160 in his stock.
My friend told me he wanted a second G160 to be used for an experiment (Ethernet Bonding?) he wanted to play, but then he changed his idea.

About me & the lan, what I really really want is a pci-1000-Mbit/sec for IP30, because it's good for NFS@Cerberus
but first I have to find an Octane2

Oh, sometimes I am also tempted by the fiber channel, but I have absolutely no FC equipment.

emm, right, the Indy version was G130, but what have they written here in the auction title?

Phobos-G130 -10-100baseT-Ethernet-card- for-SGI-Indigo2 , and also in the auction description

Phobos G130 10/100baseT Ethernet card for SGI Indy and Indigo R4000 systems. New in box. Offers welcome. Willing to ship worldwide. Please contact with your location in order to obtain a shipping quote.

Here in italy we have a law that says YOU MUST wipe everything (especially if confidential, or under copyright) in the hard drive, or simply destroy the hard drive throwing it into a smasher machine.

There is, of course, a business about those smasher machines, because they are expensive and you are obliged to have a piece of paper in where a company is declaring your confidential data (or your customers confidential data) is gone destroyed.

e.g. when my university decided to put the Indy Lab (we didn't have other SGI machines, just Indys) out of her inventory, they called a recycle company and they signed a paper assuring the university that everything related to the digital information would be smashed, and so they did. I have seen them through my window, because I was working there like "assistant" in another computer lab (Matlab, numerical applications).

So, Irix 6.5.14, and everything installed there and everything in the Indy's Lab went smashed, including a copy a working copy of Pro/E with license. Damn!

I was only able to save just one Xterm by Tektronix (they had 20 units, 19 of them gone destroyed), but without the PSU and without any software. Ironically I found the PSU and an original CD with TekXpress(1) on an exchange-fair located in germany.

And an one year later, I found the Pro/E-R17 original CD, of course without a license, while, AH-HA, my university had an earlier version.

(1) it's specific to Xterm by Tektronix, basically it's an X11 client + apps like telenet, it runs on the Xterm, and it's MIPS3_BE/COFF, it's very hard to be found. I was lucky, even if … I payed 50 euro for both PSU & CD

that's it, according to Stephen Hawking conjecture on the why on they you'd better avoid to build a time machine, but let me say I absolutely do not trust that Theory is really right (1)!

(1) oh well, my … emm … " scientific motivations " about that is I have never concluded the book Stephen Hawking wrote with his friend Roger Penrose , because I hate the way Penrose writes books, he is too … emm emm... " talkative ", too many words to express a small concept, too long sentences with too many verbs and adverbs and prepositions that I can't, I really can't conclude more than 10 pages without getting sleepy

hi guys
I have seen a dude claiming that his SoundBlaster/PCI is compliant with Octane2, and I wonder about the Irix support, and also if the hw is really compliant.

p.s.
can someone suggest, in case, a good Wave Editor for Irix ? (I mean, if it is existing, something like SourceForger for Windows, a program that makes you able to add Fade_IN/Fade_OUT, to apply a few digital filters, to copy & cut, etc, just the basic job with Wave file)

thanks.
