hi guys
i am looking for one of the following machine
  • A7000+, ARM710 @ 48Mhz
  • RiscPC/700 2 slot with Strong Arm @ 200Mhz
  • Iyonix

also i'd like special hardware, like
  • 486DX4@100Mhz guest board for Risc/PC
  • scsi board for A7000+ or Risc/PC

i wander which is the best for me, i'd also like to buy the DEE kit (C/asm compiler + debugger for arm)
i have OS/2 v3 NET, original CD & floppy, but i do not have any v4, sorry

what about prices ?
how much should be a RiscPC with StrongArm @ 200 Mhz ?

i have not decided if to buy an A7000+ or a RiscPC
in case of RiscPC, i like to buy SCSI and a guestCPU 486card

i know Kumba, i emailed him a lot of time, and we discussed on the gentoo forum: we have different opinion about linux
  • i am improving 2.6.17, i am alone, but i already have a working machine with a few minor bugs to be fixed and features to be added
  • he is trying to fix 3.* series,he hasn't a working machine (with SMP) and he is alone
nobody today want to spend free time on Octane, so … that is my opinion: improve the 2.6.17, and enjoy it!

also, personally i am following MIPS32 on things like Atheros SoC, or CI20)
my friend has
  • Impact R10 @ 195Mhz
  • SolidImpact graphics board
  • it boots from an external scsi hard drive.

i am experimenting a slowdown on the console, e.g. more than 10 seconds to wait since you click on "console", to when it really appears on the monitor, while exporting things through the lan, and using them remotely with X11 client, has no slowdown

i really wander what could be wrong

any idea ?

I’m rather surprised about that: my O2+ with R12K @ 400Mhz is faster than my friend's impact R10K @ 195Mhz
the feeling you have sitting in front of the machine is that O2+ is faster than impact
and Mathematica for Irix completes things faster

but, may be there is something wrong in the Impact of my friends, perhaps … about his Irix installation.

if the harddrive was faulty then i would have issues using the machine remotely (1) too, while i have not: issues are ONLY if the machine is used locally

the hard drive is a brand new unit, the scsi cable and the external box have been heavily tested with linux: not issues about that

(1) exporting x11-display through ssh is working perfectly without any performance lost, when i launch Wordpefect remotely i get it in less than 1 second, while using the machine locally has up to 10 second of delay when i click on everything i can click on the desktop, it's really too slow to launch things

hi guys
a friend of mine has given me his Impact just to make me toy with it, it's an Irix Impact (IP28) box with Irix on, i am not used to play with irix, as i am toying with linux on my Octane2 (IP30)

so, i do not have any experience about License for compilers, on my linux box i simply use gcc

it seems i have to use MIPS Pro Compiler for project like the following

Code: Select all

bluQueen# ls

i already have installed gcc for Irix, i am able to recompile a few o my linux text-console applications, e.g. i have written a text editor, just for fun, which i am recycled to code a TAP-debugger interface.

is there any student discount to buy the MIPSpro C Compiler's license ?
in the web pace i have linked it is written business only, but it seems the information is pretty old 2010 at least, so any news since than ?
i'd like to have a license, but i do not have any business ticket as i am a student.

fixed, i removed "DNS", definitively, and forced "file"
now it takes less than 1 second to launch a local console

yes

R10K @195Mhz (indigo2) vs R12K@400Mhz (O2+)
200Mhz of difference about the CPU clock
and Mathematica do a lot of CPU calculations

my friend has a " SolidImpact gfx " in the his indigo2 , it should be the low cost gfx for Impact
he said me he had a " Maximum Impact gfx ", which was 3 boards mounted one near the other
and he sold out because he did not use

i should also try Maya-v5, sooner, or later

hi
i have an Octane2 and O2+, my friend has an Impact, i am a working student, so i have to travel a lot by car; for such a reason the O2+ is my best liked: because it heavy the less when i have to carry it into my car

also the O2+ R12K is not supported by linux because of the R12K module so i put on Irix and i am used to play linux only on octane2.

i feel the IP30 as an "heavy an noisy machine", so i have put "the heavy big iron" remotely somewhere in the room under my father's roof. There is a RTT latency of a few secnds but i am able to access the machine remotely by SSH + an uart connection on the console. I have set the environment to route the console to the uart instead of on the keyboard and monitor, also i have connected an arduino + enc-lan with a rele-shield in order to hard reset and power on/off the machine, remotely.

and, surprisingly it works!

i have the full remote control, i really do no need to sit in front the machine

on Octane2 i am used to play with
  • linux kernel 2.6.17, hacking this, and that with success of pretty hell disaster
  • gentoo MIPS3 stage4 (that is compatible with my MIPS32 router, but the IP30 has more CPU power about natively compile things, and it's 10 time faster)

i have an original copy of IRIX 6.5.27 but i haven't installed it yet, so my IP30 is used only to toy with linux

while on my O2+ i can't run linux, i do not like *BSD, so i have installed Irix 6.5.19, which i am used to play with
  • Mathematica for Irix, a wonderful program
  • WordPerfect for Unix
  • Illustrator
  • Photoshop
  • a few freeware software like nano, nedit, abiword, etc
  • gcc for Irix, which i used to code my C sources toys
  • MIPS C Pro, is in my wish list
  • i think i will be able to run Maya on O2+, too (sooner or later)

btw, on my curiosity is strong: which is your hardware ? and for which purpose do you use your MIPS-SGI-box ?
ladies  ?
TeamBlackFox wrote: My Octane sees a lot of use, as does my O300

and what about your Irix applications ? What do you run on your Irix box ?
josehill wrote: One of the best investments I ever made for working with SGI equipment was a pair of good quality, noise canceling headphones

still too noisy here
@TeamBlackFox
i have an original CD of Pro/E for UNIX, i have never used it, also i do not know anything about its license

which CAD do you use ?

here i have a copy of maya v5, which is not a CAD, but it is the only 3D application i know for Irix

the purpose of this thread is also to understand what i could eventually run on my Irix box as i really do not know anything about Irix's Applications.
Trippynet wrote: On the O2, I replaced the PSU fan with a Nocturna one (a common mod) and it's now VERY quiet

very cool ! can you tell me more ?

my O2+ is not exactly quiet, i mean it does a bit of noise, less noise if compared to my Octane2, which is extremely noisy !

if you want to try Pro/E for Unix, i can put it somewhere, but … you have to think about the license, i do not really know anything.
