I might have a plan for that Macintosh :
  • remove the mobo-68000, and the VDU
  • directly interface the CRT
  • put an LC475-68040 mobo inside
  • interface the LC475 video to the CRT (and adapt it, in case of need)
  • put a 10Mbit lan on the mobo
  • put my gentoo/m68k stage4 on an internal SCSI HD, or a debian-68k
  • hack the first stage boot loader, and "bless" it with something that can load linux
  • enjoy the yet an other text linux box (extremely good as … text console for Irix)

oh, well, and I am happy because I have sold out 2 SUN boxes (HD boxes) like yours :D

oh well, you say that because you haven't seen my extremely beautiful aquarium made of comics fishes :D

I added a dolphin , because Gaga absolutely wanted a dolphin ...
and she also wanted an ostrich , but wtf has an ostisth to do inside a virtual fish tank ?

currently it's proof alpha code which requires xlib from X.org/X11
so you need to put a dead dinosaur inside the macintosh just to see .. a few fishes & a dolphin ...
but (trust me) with a bit of extra effort
it's possible to reimplement as directly frame buffer
(when your fishes & dolphin can directly access /dev/fb0 )
so it will look delicious & light, like a candy

thanks, R1xK is still out of my knowledge, I am playing assembly with R2k/3K and mips32

I bought an Atlas board (1), it comes with a mips32r2 core BE/LE + fpga and LA (logic analyzer) test points, it also inludes (on the fpga side) a cache engine and a burst engine (synchronous data transfer), plus a gdb stub in ROM and a full E-jtag , this one mounted on a common 2.54" pins header. So It's the best platform to experiment the mips architecture because everything is under control.

I do not have an indigo2 , one of my friends has one, but he is not interested in any linux and cpu hacks, he is fine just with Irix and his Illustrator , So I am collecting more informations(2) about the R12K on indigo2 hack , just to be more confident it is really possible, and it really does make sense. I am not able to say a word about the speedup from R10k to R12K , and I dot have the possibility to check by myself

(2) I am waiting from a reply from the author of the hack, already contacted

hi guys
I am planning to attach a lot of uart driven toys, so I need a "quad-Ethernet and 6-Serial XIO MENET board"
  • SGI PN 030-0873-003
it's 4 x 10/100 ports + 6 x serial ports, and it's extremely useful (for me) for the extra uarts

if you have one for sale, let me know in PM

thanks :D

of course, but SGI wants CD/DVDrom units with a specific firmware, there is a compatibility list, that is the reason why I offered a unit that is known to be SGI compliant (and already set in the right way).

so you have a DVDrom, sorry, no party, I have for sale a CDrom. I suggest you to check -1- if your unit is in the SGI compatibility list, and -2- the manual to be sure you have set it properly. See the O2 user manual for that.

wiki page about SGI Fuel
Audio
In its standard configuration, the Fuel does not come with any audio hardware, although speakers may be attached via a Universal Serial Bus sound card. The most common solution to add audio capabilities is to install a M-Audio Revolution 7.1 PCI sound card, although the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS can also be used . Additional audio options using PCI expansion cards are available.

but I am speaking about Octane +shoebox (triple PCI slot), isn't there a note page for Octane about that Sound card?
I am not sure it will be compliant
e.g. Fuel has a list of working sATA_PCI cards, and these cards are not working on Octane

about me , there are just a few things to know: I am exuberant , and I love the urban dictionary : is it a problem ?!?
If I remember correct, 715 (and 712) needs to set your firmware environment to "switch" the console from VGA/PS2 to uart.
It's safe on 715 (it means you can always go back), it's not safe on 712 (it means … if you did a mistake … then you need to hack your console, to recover the firmware environment, which is saved on flash).

have you set the environment ? oh well, it requires a VGA monitor + a keyboard

p.s.
but! 715 should also have a special mode to force the console to the serial port, but I do not remember in details, you better read the 715 user manual.

Still waiting for a few snapshots from the mod author

as far as I have understood mr tooR has modded a Silicon Graphics Indigo2 CPU Module R10K @ 195Mhz SGI P/N 030-0966-004
  • removing the R10K
  • replacing with an R12K extracted from an O2+
  • desoldering the crystal @ 48Mhz, replacing with a 50Mhz (4x50Mhz=200Mhz)
  • it's not clear how he changed the Vcore voltage

does someone has a detailed photo of an original R10K CPU module ?
I'd like to see if I can recognize a switching + LDO stage somewhere

you should see a logo with a big "HP" written in the center of the screen, and if you press a key, you should stop the bootstrap in order to enter the firmware shell, but currently your monitor might be out of synchronism, the firmware enables you to set different frequencies, if you do not set it properly, or if your CRT is not compliant with that, you will get a black screen.

I do not know if there is a multi scan procedure, my Tektronix enables me to "try" a CRT resolution just pressing a few magic keys during the bootstrap. I do not know the 715 in deep details, so I really suggest you to read the UserManual , find the section where it explain how to force the console to the serial line without the need to set the firmware (if I remember good, 715 can do it, 712 can't), and try.

If it will fail again, you might also consider an hardware trouble: RAM fault ? dust in the RAM socket ? something on the BUS which causes faults ? Giving an eye to the troubleshooting section of the UserManual may really help.

I used Ada in avionics, professional tools including a professional IDE called "AdaMULTI IDE" made by Green Hills Software. I had a Sparc/SunOS on hands and a professional ICE. Never tried and found anything similar in opensoruce/openhardware.

But I had fun with Ada on my PPC laptop (Apple G3 Powerbook)

gcc has no internal support for Ada, it requires an external core.

GNAT is a good choice, but it needs a bootstrap in order to be compiled, and it's hard to get Ada bootstrappers for MIPS, or for HPPA, it's easy on X86, AMD64, PPC, SPARC, and … may be ARM (I have seen bootstrap ARM/LE around)

Audigy2 ZS should be compliant to PCI/5V (perhaps 5V tolerant?)
What is not clear to me if it has been really tested on IP30/Octane2 with success.

three levels of compliance
  • 1) hardware side, IP30, XIO_PCI_shoebox
  • 2) firmware side, IP30 mobo, the last revision of everything
  • 3) software side, more specifically if Irix v6.5.27 is enough

oh well, then there is the Application side, where I'd like to hear a few WaveEditor Apps. The provided links above sometimes works, sometimes is broken, Yesterday I had success for just 40 seconds, so I just read a list of "something" but then the page disappeared again, next time I will save with Firefox

I am back from the new terminator-movie -- Terminator Genisys -- when once again John Connor sends Kyle Reese back in time to protect Sarah , which ohhh what an amazing story, Judging the preview I was really confident that - a 37th-best movie quote - would not have been a crap, so back from this boring experience I wanted to have a few reads about the Science and the Psychology, more specifically what people and scientists fear about the A.I. Googling.dot.com I found these articles

- How many angels can dance on the head of a pin ? - what a crazy question, it might be good for a song-title ( I was thinking something like " Duran Duran - Like An Angel "), but oh well, and how many sub particles can dance dance there ? and do we know the why of the distance between the proton and electron in a hydrogen atom ?

It's might be and interesting set of questions, but it might be more interesting the reason why Stephen Hawking has warned in that way. He is a scientist, he has almost the QI of Albert Einstein , so he should know that artificial intelligence is not like the one described by William Gibson .

I mean in the Cyberpunk trilogy { Down the Cyberspace, Count Zero, Monna Lisa Cyberpunk } William Gibson has written several time that the Artificial Intelligence must have a gun pointed to the head, but oh well ... we have failed in A.I. in the last 50 years, we are far from the " singularity-event " and his friend Roger Penrose has written up to 4 books just to say we can't do A.I. without first improving math and physics, and we are also struggling on Why on the Why can't Einstein and Quantum Mechanics get along, and Stephen Hawking has contributed more on describing black holes , so ... I think before meeting a true A.I. bot , humans will understand the graviton and the gravity in order to build flying robots but without trashing so much energy in the ESC-technology (brashness motors + propeller, controlled by dedicated MPU with the purpose of being fast and accurate in their response) that we are currently using to make our quadri and esa rotors able to fly. These bots are cool, everyone wants to buy one, but see their autonomy, usually these bots can fly for 30-40 minutes, but then they need to land because their batteries are almost uncharged.

so I expected you to mention a 2001 American science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on a project made by Stanley Kubrick : " A.I. Artificial Intelligence " :D

That movie sounds to me like the futuristic tale of Pinocchio, The Adventures of a new Pinocchio-bot , a story about an animated puppet, a robot with a new kind of intelligence, completely different from other puppets because it can really have emotions, and other fairy tale devices (including a new definition of prostitutes, will robots made for this ?). The setting of the story is in a far away future, that will go even more 'far away in the future until a world in where humans are completely extinct. Marvelous movie!

the science will feel like Alice in the Wonderland , she has just discovered the first quantum computing , so she is following the fist white rabbit she has seen, with the principle of the causality, sooner or later it will be tumbling down the rabbit hole .

oh well, quantum mechanics gives an incomplete description of the real state of affairs, but the science knows what Penrose is arguing: he says that to be conscious the robot hardware should be powered by quantum mechanics , so we do still do not know in details how to achieve strong A.I. but we know something about their hardware ( quantum computing machines ), while there's still no scientific definition for soul. What is it ? Turing said nothing about that, Is it a special quantum mechanics ? Does it include gravitons ?

It's a " learn by experiences " path-planner that solves the grid, basically I recycled an A*++ algorithm and I added an tree-engine ( feedback-renforced , cost oriented, neural network ) ables to evaluate different solutions when a few physical rules must be respected (e.g. rule13 : do not take curves with 90 degree, rule14 : be smoothed , rule15 : do not smash yourself into a wall, rule16 : when you see a wall then try to circumnavigate, etc), I taught the " basic strategies ", and then I made the computer able to explore a tree of the suboptimal choices and free to choose one of them with all the consequence it can learn from its experiences, plus the influence of my feedbacks when I judge the solution-path within the range +{ well done! .. crap! }-

I have understood that It's not so simple when the grid has constraints, and, as argued by a MIT video, I have also understood that it's completely different when a computer has a real body that can interact with the real world. My toy " lives " inside a 2D grid , a world without the third dimension, without the gravity force and the dust: I guess I am too young to extend that robot-mind to the lynxmotion robotic arm , becouse in order to achieve this new purpose I need to evolve the path planner into a motion planner , which also implies having to deal with lot of servo-motors, their mechanical details and response curves and feedbacks. I n short I am afraid my knowledge requires a lot of new steps ahead .
I wish I could enter into the vegetable garden of William Gibson , on the right of a director, to decide how a film is ultimately released for public viewing, but I am not a nor Cyberpunk writer neither a dude in Hollywood , and my * flawless English * still looks like an old rusty trailer which needs a fix-up, so my personal wonderland begins with a pill ... tumbling down the rabbit hole , where the sky above the router port is the color of television, tuned to a dead channel and some gears still need a debugger there.
@recondas
so kind, thank you, it helps a lot :)

new words for my English dictionary, plus an emotional reaction in my mind: I envy Skynet, because she began to learn at a geometric rate, 24/7, while my English seems limited to a sublinear rate.

I agree: Irix on SGI hw!

I am working as broker, buddy, make an offer to us (my group) in PM. From SB16, AWE32 to AWE64-Glold , the choice is still available, but I haven't tested them with DOS yet (because I was with the need to have a damn ISA mobo (1)), while I have found two floppies for the GalaxySound Card, plus a copy of KK , which is an amazing dos game and it uses the SB, so it's good as testbench. The AWE64G is currently on ebay now, my friend is asking 50 euro + shipping because it's a brand new card with manuals and box and other crap (midi cable? who does need it? microphone? oh well), probably other SB cards can go away for 10-20 euro, just because they really are second hand and without manuals. If you want the whole lot, I can try to persuade him or them to fill out a special price, something like 30 euro for the whole, not including the the AWE64G, or something like 60 euro for the whole-lot. Plus shipping, which ... if you do not have a better solution will be something like 20 euro to UK. Sorry, I haven't a better solution about that (netherland has better shipping servide, I am really impressed, cheap/fast/excellent service).

(1) oh, but yesterday I also got the dead corpse of an IBM Aptiva/486 , which is dead but it works in the definition of "working dead" ("walking dead"? oh well the PSU is really funny, sometime it works, sometime it does not), but ignoring all the voodoo that is required to keep the zombie under my control, this means I finally got a PC with an ISA bus !!!! Where to put a sound blaster card in order to test it with DOS! I have been looking for weeks, and on the 5th try I got the zombie, how lucky I am.

I guess that against all the nonsense in choices made by vendors abut ISA16 (like the WFT in the IRQ, DMA assignment), only the strong black voodoo can achieve success

so, well done, buddy!

to the environment, but the 715 has a " restoration " procedure that will restore the env to the default, while 712 has no " restoration " procedure, so … toying with the environment might be dangerous!

example, video mode change (not dangerous, you can resume pressing TAB during the bootstrap)

Code: Select all

HP9000 model 712
...
BOOT_ADMIN> monitor 7
Monitor Choices
Type     Resolution     Frequency
----     ----------     ---------
1      1280x1024        72Hz
2      1024x768         75Hz
3      1024x768         70Hz
4      1024x768         75Hz     Flat Panel
5      1280x1024        60Hz
6      1024x768         60Hz
7       640x480         60Hz
8      1280x1024        75Hz     VESA
9      1024x768         75Hz     VESA
10       800x600         75Hz     VESA
11       640x480         75Hz     VESA
12      1280x1024        72Hz     Greyscale
13      1280x1024        50Hz

Current Monitor Type is
7       640x480         60Hz

BOOT_ADMIN> reset

example of dangerous setting, ISL is loaded by the HPUX media, and if you type it wrong … your console is lost until you will desolder the NvRAM and restore it to the default value

Code: Select all

HP9000 model 712

Setting console
Run the following command to set your 712 to use a serial RS-232 console with 9600 Baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and no parity:

ISL> conspath 2/0/4.0x283

To set your 712 to use the local console (i.e. keyboard and screen), run the following command:

ISL> conspath 1/0/0.0

715 has a similar procedure, but there is an hw setting which will force the NvRam to be restored to the default. For details check the UserManual, sorry I do not remember and I do not have any note like the above.
hey oh? Swimming pool & Racing bicycle.

It seems I have found something nice: Compucase D340-SCA , on Amazon .
It costs ~120 euro brand new, it's 3 to 4 Hot Swappable Hard disc Enclosure with SCSI Backplane.
I can't find detailed specifications.

It might happen in an alternative universe, had they taken the title of this package at all seriously, they would have had to be much cheaper than PC/intel, less than 10 years ago, we would have had to hold a very different debate, and now … we would not have had to argue on what we would have had if there was a R18K, an R20K … an R40K, because we would have seen … Irix v6.6.66 running on mips multi core , dual, quadri, octo core R40K

btw, the "new mips" live in MIPS32/MIPS64 multi core, products developed in china, while the new Octane3 wins a lot of cores by intel .

It's all Itanium 's fault

yep, " the fallen-mips, because of the Rick's Itanium dream ", it sounds like a good movie, or a good theme for a " geek beer club ", called " the itanium haters ", you will get free ( dark, red, blonde, cool, warm , as your wishes) beers if you argue thesis about what would have had happened if that lord had been killed/banned/burned before he had success in the attempt to kill the mips at SGI :D
