I found this article while doing a search. This guy's pretty impressed by his free Fuel. :D

Kinda. But an 800 mhz Fuel is about equal to a 2 ghz P-IV. Faster at some things, slower at others, but roughly equal.

I guess a P-IV is not exactly the top of the Intel lineup these days tho :P
P4 wasn't even the top of the lineup when it was new. When an architecture sucks so bad that the manufacturer decides to make a successor by taking the previous architecture and slapping a faster bus on it, that says a lot.

You may be thinking “600MHz CPU?” - but that CPU is totally badass because it is actually a MIPS CPU with a 5 stage core pipeline. Compared to a 20+ stage pipeline in Intel CPUs, it is roughly comparable to a 2.4GHz Intel CPU with just the pipeline alone. Add in the fact that the MIPS CPU architecture doesn’t have any baggage in it’s high-performance pipeline, and the end result is that it performs far faster than that!

So this is why that guy on 4chan's /g/ was going off saying that the SGI could outperform modern machines with some tasks .

Rule of thumb for RISC has always been that it performs about as well as a twice-as-fast Intel CPU. So, a 600 MHz MIPS should rival a 1.2GHz Intel pentium whatever. And as others have mentioned there are gradations depending upon task specifics. I vividly remember how much faster MIPS was at mixed million line C, C++ and fortran compiles, compared to top shelf Intel running gcc/g++ under Linux in the late 90s. Sadly MIPS could not maintain that dominance as Intel was outspending them 100 to 1 in R&D. Owning 99 percent of the market, mediocre product nothwithstanding, has its benefits.

That and the fact that SGI pretty much ended mainstream MIPS development after the R10000 came along due to Rick's Itanium dream.

If they'd continued to develop it properly, maybe it would have continued to hold its own for a few years longer.

It might happen in an alternative universe, had they taken the title of this package at all seriously, they would have had to be much cheaper than PC/intel, less than 10 years ago, we would have had to hold a very different debate, and now … we would not have had to argue on what we would have had if there was a R18K, an R20K … an R40K, because we would have seen … Irix v6.6.66 running on mips multi core , dual, quadri, octo core R40K

btw, the "new mips" live in MIPS32/MIPS64 multi core, products developed in china, while the new Octane3 wins a lot of cores by intel .

yep, " the fallen-mips, because of the Rick's Itanium dream ", it sounds like a good movie, or a good theme for a " geek beer club ", called " the itanium haters ", you will get free ( dark, red, blonde, cool, warm , as your wishes) beers if you argue thesis about what would have had happened if that lord had been killed/banned/burned before he had success in the attempt to kill the mips at SGI :D

They didn't just kill MIPS, they killed Alpha too. We've pretty much been stuck with x86 ever since and the person involved in making the deal with the devil now wants to be president.
