I hope I get some time over soon, so I can play with my SGI hardware for real. Right now I have to make 3D graphics that requires my main PC workstation. So all "3D time" has to be spent on "serious" stuff.. No fun at all.

What are the specs of your main modeling workstation on your site?

I've had my head buried in the sand a long time with 6.5.19. I just recently upgraded to 6.5.22 and wow I'm so glad I did. This tool has made the once excruciating task of installing software a rather pleasant one. Apt-get for irix. Great work. Kudos to you.
Sys admin. The company I currently work for caters to the SMB crowd. 3d modeler by trade but I required a much more steady means of compensation when the family started to grow.
Code:
(and I don't think IRIX does, at least without major hacking)

How would one go about increasing the maximum password length on an Irix box?

Most likely cause is a lack of 3D acceleration. Check your configuration.

Will this not work through a forwarded X session maybe?
This is what has been tickling my fancy lately~

Code:
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears: Scandalous. Ballad of Jimmy Tanks (Saw them at Austin City Limits live)
Che: Sounds of Liberation. The Knife
Earth: The Bees Made Honey In the Lion's Skull. Miami Morning Coming Down II (Shine) (When I just want to listen to nothing)
Earth: Hibernaculum. Ouroboros is Broken (Another that's been burning out the platter in my hd)
Zero 7: When It Falls. When It Falls (Sia Furler has such a soothing voice)
Soundgarden: Superunknown. Spoonman (Ahh memories from my youth. Saw them live)
Type O Negative: Dead Again. Hail and Farewell to Britain (Another band that has a special place in my heart. RIP Pete Steele)
Jesu: Silver. Wolves
Mad Season: Above. River of Deceit
Massive Attack Vs. Mad Professor: No Protection. Radiation Ruling The Nation (Always appreciate a Massive Fan -> Alver)

Back in the day (mid 90's) I had the pleasure of doing contract work for SGI. We worked on accounts such as Disney, Fermi-Lab, LANL..etc. Anyway my first SGI was an Indigo. Then progressively moved to an Indy, an Indigo2, then a couple O2's. Sadly throughout the years machines have come and gone but my trusty Octane2 has stayed with me by my side.

I can't compile it in IRIX 6.5.30, I'd guess that my Motif headers are too old, because XmCHARSET_TEXT isn't defined anywhere in /usr/include or its subdirectories, including Xm. Which packages from what CD do I have to install to compile gXipmsg?

It appears I get the same compilation error even though it appears I'm using the 2.1 build environment.

Code: Select all

$ ls -ld /usr/include/Xm
lrwxr-xr-x    1 root     sys           23 Sep 17 16:18 /usr/include/Xm -> ../Motif-2.1/include/Xm

What am I missing?
overlay 3:
motif21_dev: IRIX IM 2.1 Development Software, 6.5.30 (based on OSF/Motif 2.1.32)
motif_books: OSF Motif developer books, 1.2.3

Thank you. I was indeed missing the Motif 2.1 software. Not sure how I missed that in the overlay but it compiled w/o issue.
Seconded.

Don't intend on hijacking this thread just want to see what the solution might be. I'm getting this exact same issue on a totally unrelated piece of software I'm trying to compile.

I removed the ... in foo(...) But still cc-1055.
Code:
cc-1055 CC: ERROR File = crap.cc, Line = 443
A macro invocation has too many arguments.

foo("Some crap.\n");

I have been slowly migrating to FreeBSD these days. OpenSUSE Tumbleweed wasn't bad but I'm not liking the direction Linux is heading.
I recently picked up a SAS3442X-R card for my Fuel. Can I run my system disk off this or will I also need the ARS-2160H bridge box? I am assuming I will need the bridge box as well, but I wanted to be sure before I slap down $250 for it.

Thanks
You're not married are you? :) @Ian

I have resorted to running a 20ft HDMI cable through the wall in my office that feeds into the closet + synergy. This way I still get true hardware rendering and she doesn't have to listen to "that noisy red box." It does get to come out of the office closet on occasion, but most of the time it's locked away like a neglected step child.

My gf & I have been a couple for 16 years, but we don't live under the same roof. Probably why it works so well. :)

Smart man :)

Trippynet wrote: My Fuel has also been quietened and does not make anywhere near enough noise to become annoying. It's noisier than my PC, but not by too much.

What fans did you use to replace the old ones? My noisy option drive has been replaced with a SSD thanks to Ian, but my root 15k still makes quite a bit of noise.
Wow looks brand new. Very nice.
I come here for the great advice/tips/hacks on the boxes we all love. Everything else just becomes white noise. Which is pretty much every other forum on the interweb these days anyway.
Very odd. I just now looked at the recent tweets.
I know there maybe a few users that are still using their Sgis/Maya for creating published/production content. But I would guess most use it strictly for nostalgia purposes. If you have a favorite tool/shortcut..etc in 2016. I would make 100% sure it works in 6.5. Granted you should be able to easily re-create it in MEL. I don't use the animation toolset much. So I couldn't tell you what's different. Just be warned you may find yourself trying to fix minute differences between the two software versions. I know I did. Occasionally I will try and re-create a python script in MEL on 6.5 just for comparison, but I rarely use the Fuel much for any real Maya work.
So my Fuel has been chugging along nicely for that last few years. Minus the machine not keeping the date when its unplugged. A minor issue and I have been meaning to replace the dallas chip to fix that. However today I have no graphics on the machine. It boots up fine and I can ssh into, but zero shows up on the screen. I connected a serial cable to see the output:

I came across another reference to this in forum post: viewtopic.php?t=16725016 . Down at the very bottom there was a link to another page that looked like a vpro replacement was needed.

Is there anything else I can look at? Or has my gfx board been done in.

Thanks
I've been trolling ebay for one of these for a while now and have seen nothing.
Not technically a purchase. Since it was given to me. A pair of Sun t5120s.
