The collected works of bigD - Page 2

So I'm a friggin' idiot. The problem was my CD-ROM drive all along. Apparently the external drive that works just fine with my Octane2 isn't 100% happy with my Indigo2. I discovered this by trying out my Onyx2's drive, which is now happily installing 6.5.22 on my Indigo2.

So now I have about 17 working burns of Disk 1 of 6.5.22 - anyone want one? ;)

Also, the common wisdom is to release the hex bolts first, then the screws on the top and bottom. When reinstalling, secure the screws, then the hex bolts. Supposedly this is to reduce the excess weight on the compression connector. I learned this after doing it the 'wrong way' a couple of times and it didn't hurt anything, but I figure it's better to be safe than sorry.

I guess I've never given my poor little teal Indigo2 its due here. Well, and I finally just got IRIX installed on it a few days ago. ;)

I still don't have a GE16 in this bad boy, but it's been over a month, and I just wanted to say how much I LOVE this machine. :)

I know the benchmarks don't necessarily show that IR2 is faster than V12, but now that I have another monitor for my Octane2 and can see these machines do their thing side by side - the IR2 certainly seems to have an edge. It's silky smooth in areas that make my V12 stutter a bit - the Skyrocket screensaver, over certain areas of the Town demo, etc. If only my wife would let me have the Onyx2 *inside* the house - it'd be perfect!

Anyway, I just thought I'd share my joy in case anyone is on the fence about getting one. I haven't owned as much hardware as a lot of guys on this board, but I've had my fair share of non-SGI, and this Onyx2 is by far the coolest single piece of hardware I've ever owned, including the modern stuff. Of course, a *rack* (or two, or three...) might even be cooler..... :D

I can't believe I suggested gfxinfo when the poor guy can't get his Onyx2 to boot. That's what you get for drinking and posting!

I'm interested to see how this turns out. I dropped RM10s into my Onyx2 without any trouble. If the NIC seems fine, I'd do what recondas mentioned and roll back to the RM9s. And definitely clear the logs via POD - that'll probably get your other node back online.
:Onyx2: :Fuel: :Indigo2: :Indigo2IMP: :O3x0:
squigly,

Other than your O2, do you have any other SGI hardware? If not, go spend $100 and get a mid-spec, dual processor Octane. I think you'll be VERY surprised how responsive it is compared to machines that are supposedly far faster. Heck, I bet you'll be surprised how well IRIX runs on your O2 (you're still running BSD on it, right?), but it really shines with more than one proc. If you find that you enjoy IRIX and can live with some of its shortcomings, you'll realize why people will easily spend a few grand on a Tezro, even though faster commodity hardware can be had for less.

Now that I'm pimping IR3, I'm developed a snobbery against V12, even in a Tezro. ;)

I've had the LCD of my Powerbook 170 down to about -40ºC, but that was just for a few hours at a time. I can imagine extended times at such a low temperature could be a problem, though.

I just got a Kill-A-Watt meter, so I figured I'd add the results from my three SGI machines. I haven't updated the wiki because I don't want to step on other people's results - perhaps I should just append mine to the bottom? I'm not sure what the accepted procedure is there.

Anyway, these are all off a standard 110V, 15A outlet. Idle means sitting at an IRIX desktop, and loaded means I'm pushing the graphics. I couldn't get any of my machines to draw more power when the processor(s) are being pushed. I also include standby numbers - the machine powered off but plugged in (or in the case of the Onyx2, the breaker in the back switched on).

So here they are:

Code:
Indigo2, 200MHz R4400, Extreme, 9.1GB HDD, 128MB RAM
Standby:    5.5 (Watts)
Idle:       145
Loaded:    153

Octane2, 2x400MHx R12000, V12, 73GB HDD, 1.25GB RAM
Standby:    3.3
Idle:       243
Loaded:    260

Onyx2, 4x400MHz R12000, IR3, 73GB HDD, 4.5GB RAM
Standby:    20
Idle:       945
Loaded:    1025

To push the graphics, I used the Lattice screensaver for the Onyx2 and Octane2, and the solidview demo for my Indigo2.

This practice bothers me, although I realize the benefits, and understand that logically it makes sense.

With software, there's the idea that I don't really own it - I simply paid for the license to use it. With hardware it's different. I own it. If I want to hack it, modify it, set it on fire - whatever - it's my prerogative because it's mine . And it's this (irrational, I'll admit) feeling that gets offended by what Intel is doing.

But whatever. It's not like I'm going to start buying AMD because of it. :)

Yep. It's not so much what the airplane will do, but rather what the company (for fuel savings reasons) or ATC wants. I'm not an airline pilot, but I see it too. My bird will happily do .92, but I spend 95% of my time doing far less. When mixed in with the airliners, it's usually .78 or .80.
