Airline Pilot.

So, uhm, say I wanted some big stuff transported cross the Atlantic?

Ha! If there's interesting heavy iron in any of my cargo compartments, that plane will be going straight to my local airport! :)

Seriously though, a pilot always seemed to me like a rather relaxed profession, but these days you hear about pilots that work to long shifts and get too tired. What's it like for you?

I have it pretty good when it comes to fatigue. We don't fly through the night, and typically just two legs per day. A couple of times per year the schedule breaks down and we end up flying to the limits of the regulations (16 hours on duty here in the States), which is pretty grueling, but it's rare. Guys on the lower tiers of the industry tend to get worked a lot harder - I'm by no means at the top, but I'm far enough up the ladder to not have to worry about being a zombie all the time either.

I've worked on a military flight simulator and it seemed pretty much punch in some way point data into a CDU and let the APs fly the jet for you while you sort out hours of paperwork, rules and regulations.

It's definitely pretty routine, until something goes wrong or the conditions push us to the limits of what's legal/safe. As I tell people, I spend 95% of my job thinking I'm overpaid, and 5% feeling I'm grossly underpaid . ;)

Who gets more tail, Bieber or Zuckerberg?

I'm going with Bieber. I find (through 2nd hand experience, mind you) that women are more attracted to fame than money. Although both work wonders of course!

That pic of the desk with the Onyx2 deskside underneath and a Tezro on top is pure, unadulterated, geek porn.

I have a 4x400MHz IR3 Deskside, and it runs fine on a 110V 15A circuit. The cord does get warm, but I haven't had any trouble. Using a Kill-A-Watt meter, it draws 945 watts at idle, and 1025 watts with a graphics load (I use the Lattice screensaver for this). Obviously there's not a lot of overhead on a 15A circuit with this beast running, so one of these days the plan is to properly wire the garage - but until then, 15A works.

I have absolutely zero experience with Amiga stuff, but as a fan of the 680x0, I love the idea of a machine with an '060. Very cool!

Have you tried the 'Schedule' option in the Energy Saver module of System Preferences?

Pimp!

C'mon guys - we all knew this was coming. Or at least anyone with an iPhone/iPad that went through what they did with iOS 7.

I'm not saying I like it, but none of it surprises me either.

Friggin' sexy, man!

Wow - what a machine!

If any of my SGI's booted to something resembling Windows, I'd kick my cat.

Apologies if I misunderstand your quote, but I think OP was suggesting the opposite, i.e. having Windows boot to something resembling the SGI desktop.

LOL - I did misunderstand! Thanks for talking me off the ledge. :)

I know, I know - but I have a generic i5 PC running around the clock so my wife and I can VNC in to our scheduling software, which is Windows only. It has a boring black mid-tower case, and I'm thinking about replacing it with something that looks and is designed a bit better.

Since us SGI nerds appreciate good hardware design, I figure some of you might have some case recommendations. I know I'm never going make my lame Intel setup imitate an O2 or Octane, but is there something out there that not only looks nice, but also seems to have some thought put into the design? The cost doesn't matter if the quality justifies it.

Any ideas? The cases I see at Fry's seem to cater to gamers, or be built cheaply. And online it's hard to get a sense of the build quality. Reviews help, but it'd be nice to get a couple of recommendations from people that *know* what kind of quality I'm looking for. :)

If you ever get the hots for a VW 320, that cat better scat :P

Yeah, no thanks on the VW 320! I'll take my Indigo2 thank you very much!

Damn - those look good to me! Thanks for the tip.

I appreciate all the responses guys - thanks for the help!

Yeah, I got the impression early on that you bit off a lot more than you can chew. Part of the reason many of us love these machines (and UNIX machines in general) is that there's a certain amount of discovery required to get one up and running properly. You seemed to want it to 'just work'. It's not an iPad.

You have a nice Indy, though - hopefully it'll sell soon. :)

Haha - mine too. But I'm also married, so just like my various SGIs, it doesn't get used nearly as much as it should.

guardian452 wrote: However, after reading the description, not only can I see it's brilliance, I can actually understand it! (Kinda makes you wonder why IBM didn't have a high-color CGA mode like this, back in the day...)

I was never into the demo scene either - that seemed to exist more on the Commodore/Amiga side, and I grew up on PCs and Macs. But I love the idea of squeezing every ounce of capability out of vintage hardware, and doing things the designers never imagined possible. Especially when you find super creative ways to do so, as these guys did.

It's completely futile of course, but then again as an SGI enthusiast I won't throw stones.

I get the impression that my wife is close to coming to the same conclusion. She's financially in a better position than I am, so I'm not sure how it'd work, but I'm sure the state will find a way!

Actually, this is a big reason why I'm hesitant to jump on TeamBlackFox's Tezro - if my wife pulls the cord on this thing, I'll be driving 3000 miles to the east coast. I'm already trying to figure out how to do that with my Onyx2 DS - more SGI kit is probably not a good idea until the situation stabilizes.

Friggin' women!

I love that poster (especially given my career). I even have it framed and hung up over my teal Indigo2.

jmc wrote: Nice! :D Love that poster too! Is that an actual SGI poster or did you print it yourself?

Thanks! I found it on eBay years and years ago. It was a promotional SGI poster printed on heavy foam board, perhaps from a trade show or something. Recently I spent some money to have it professionally framed, and thought it'd look nice hung up over my Indigo2.
:Onyx2: :Indigo2: :O3x0:
I'd love to find a way to make a high quality scan of my poster. The problem is that I had it framed, and the glass it's behind creates pretty strong reflections if I attempt to take any photos of it. There's no way to remove the poster without destroying the frame, unfortunately.

Perhaps a hand scanner would work?

Many (most?) states here require front and back as well, but it's not something that's heavily enforced. I drove my last Acura for almost 15 years in both Texas and California without a front plate and was never ticketed. ::shrug::
