Hi, I am up to hears of read that OpenGL totally sucks versus the M$ DirectX APIs, mainly said by the bunch of pc users, -cough- pc gamers. Since Mac OS X is all about OpenGL and OpenGL is all about SGI, I would love to hear from OpenGL guys here about that. To be honest, I am not a 3D dude.

Thanks.

Thanks for the input 'ShadeOfBlue', sure you are right, gamers that have no clue and just giving support to M$, let me write the last one, the dude that wrote the following is a 'switcher', that is, a dude that now has a Mac and previously a pc, to be honest I suspect he actually has also the pc and just bought the Mac to say 'hey, I also have a Mac' (plus, he has, not one!, but three xbox) :lol: read 'carefully' :x

"you go anywhere with a 32 MB GPU, the optimization of the game does not care, put it on 1024*768 and see the textures, the game load the textures on the GPU, same goes with the game levels, they are loaded into the accelerator RAM, therefore Carmack (the Doom 3 dude) says the minimum amount actually to play games is 128 MB video RAM."

Later he says... "yes, you can create a game with only 32MB videoRAM, if the game is optimized, but, the graphics´ll be a piece of cr*p (Doom 3, Half Life 2, Far Cry)...

Now the great news... "Peecees use directX, Macs 'still' OpenGL, if there are games cancelled on the Mac is because OpenGL, if they port them to Mac, OpenGL sucks versus DirectX, so the game´ll look horrendous, and if they do the Mac game from zero, the game´ll totally sucks due to OpenGL."

The fact: OpenGL totally sucks... Give me a break!

Guess why the games I have on my Nintendo look so beatiful :lol:

sure my friend, but you know, windows and pcs are the best thing out there, so people on Apple, SGI, Sun... have nothing to do, they are so intelligent and we kinda morons. :D

Good points Mare, that fanboy is not a friend of mine, that is, I even do not know how old he is, so figure. As you says, it makes sense that the pc world uses the -cough- M$ APIs, are there another real option?, we all know how M$ manages to do this and that. But, to discredit OpenGL without knowledge is not fair.

Mare wrote: I think you can best sum up your friends comments to the usual ramblings of a fanboy.

...

I dont think I have ever heard any reviewere or end users giving the reason for a game/application sucking because it uses one API over another.

...

What amazes me is that with all this computational power they still cant manage to improve physics technology past being able to run faster when running diagonally and jumping constantly. Instead it is being spent on making a lensflare look nicer when apparently looking through a 'persons' eyes. When was the last time you looked at the sun and thought "oh what a loverly lens effect"? 8)

Fanboys are everywhere ...

Its a graphics API not a way of life.

hum, nice indeed, what about 'upgrade' a 150MHz R10K O2?

Sorry not being of help, but I would like to know if CUPS has support for my HP LaserJet 2100 TN (Ethernet), Mac OS X includes a huge number of CUPS drivers, but as my HP has Mac OS X built-in support I unknow if CUPS is an option to get the HP working with my O2.

I must say that I have a bunch of Apple stuff, from biros to t-shirts, polos, stickers, banners, flags, mugs, posters... but no SGI ones :oops:

P.S. Not mainly related sure, but well, it is also stuff, I also have the 'old' Mac OS 9 in every language it was released and the whole Mac OS X version since Mac OS X DP4 :shock: :wink: (all them courtesy of Apple Computer).

I want to upload some movies that an IRIX user be able to check. Please, let me know the correct video format I must to use :oops:

Oh, the movies are about the game under IRIX topic :wink:

You mean to get the 30" to use it with the G5 and the nVidia card, right?, it won´t work with another config. Only the 20" and 23" models can be used with a PC, well, could those two models work with a SGI workstation?

Philips has also a superb 23 inches monitor

but Apple site says the 30" display will work only with the G5 with that nVidia card, while 20" and 23" displays will work also with PCs and hope SGIs. :?:

So you see the 30" display as a solid option, people are complaining that it is too much big :roll: Same said where the 17" PowerBook was shown, so far I love my PB screen :o

I have a Philips 17" TFT 170S4 that does Sync On Green, it works perfectly with my Octane2.

You can use a pc serial keyboard and mouse, I have SGI ones, but I found the IBM Scrollpoint mouse really nice (part number 31P8700) but you can find nice SGI keyboards and mouses on eBay really cheap, if you get it from SGI it is really expensive, at least on my country.

An O2 is a wonderful computer, with a really good looking factor. A good start into the IRIX world and it comes with a cd drive, no kidding, an Octane2 lacks it (well you can use one external scsi drive)

BTW, you could try a Mac, I found really cool jump from the IRIX Console to the Mac OS X Terminal :wink:

Now that is great, Octanes users could get a external cd/dvd drive with that Adaptec AFW 4300 PCI FireConnect card, great, so maybe I could use my FireWire LaCie burner on it then I can read cds and do some back-up discs, right?

BTW the Philips double layer DVDRW885 burner is just 95 € here in Spain :shock:

Well, I also found the adpatec card here , is that one, right?

Ian Mapleson has told me today that Cordnet are saying the price in the UK will be about £4200.

Which makes it $8,000, quite a scoop there Mr Mapleson :lol:

hehe, ask to Apple users here in Europe about the price Apple has in the States and then the price you get here, being able to get the Prism the same real price here and in the States is way cool.

Let´s see how much one must pay to get the new 2.7 Dual G5

USA -> $2999
EU -> $3720

same thing to get the freaking huge 30 inches Apple Display

USA -> $2999
EU -> $3914

so getting the dream configuration here is $1636 more expensive that there in the USA, that is not funny! :cry:

I have not tried it yet, but the Finder says NetBarrier X4 Installer is an Universal app.

Hi, long time no see.

So I would like to know if is it feasible to connect a Tezro to an Apple Cinema Display, the DVI aluminum models from July 2004 onwards.

I have a 23" and a 30" models, I understand that the 30" is a no go, but the 23" should be doable. Would it work straight out of the box or should I use any adaptor, if so, which one.?

TIA !!!

If I am not mistaken, the requirement for two Dual-DVI ports.

^^ That’s right, it’s just one Dual-Link port that’s required. I messed up my previous post when for some reason was thinking about getting support for two ACD 30" displays. My bad.
