...and the pictures will just be filed away in a box never to be looked at again. But! you never know what you will see (3 naked ladies riding a unicycle :P ) and you can get cameras as small as a credit card nowadays, so it is not much effort to bring one along.

Do something awesome . For example, several years ago we went on a family vacation to Caracas, Venezuela. The surf, island expedition, food, seeing the city, etc, was alright, but my favorite (and certainly most vivid!) memory was riding in a city bus with no walls, chickens in the overhead bins, and people dancing to salsa music blaring on the radio. Let's see, took two weeks off of school for illness and came back golden brown. In Feburary ;)

If you can find a local who will go with you for dinners and shows that will be great. As a bit of a test* I checked out the tourist stuff they have here in Cincinnati and... it sucked. Well, the zoo, aquarium, Kings Island. Art museum. Outlet malls. Baseball games. BORING CRAP. Actually the zoo is pretty good. Ottawa is the same. Toronto was a bit better. Hiding in between all the tourist places are the excellent unique shops and restaraunts. Just speaking from cities I've lived in for a while and have also bothered to check out the "touristy" things to do. Don't expect the concierge to recommend anything exciting, you gotta find it on your own!

*Actually my aunt cousin great cousin once removed (?) came down from newfoundland. She had never been to a five guys before, which is basically a fast food joint. Apparently it was the best burger she ever had! AAA would never recommend it of course, being a boring national chain. Now we did go to the outlet mall, because middle aged women like that sort of stuff.

I stand by my first post in this thread: "Spending a few hours lost in the transit system would probably do you some good." It's complexity is world famous!

Yes, very nice setup. One question: What interface are you using to connect the Octane to de 1600SW? (To strip the Sync signal of the green)

Thank you.

While the MLA is not able to sync on green IIRC it is tolerant of the signal. I never had the proper cable to check this out while I had one.

One thing that always got me is the tank simulator, I can't remember if it was included with a full install of irix or off of one of the IndyZone disks. Shortly after I joined the army I got to use the tank simulator and it was identical to the sgi one. I always figured they had an old SGI Crimson behind the sceans driving it with a custom made cockpit to feel like a Abrams tank.

Are you talking about the game bzflag? It is available for modern systems and the servers are very active. The almost-current version is in nekoware and runs well on Onyx IR.

many caves for multiple gamers would be rather expensive. or even a single cave. Not to mention an arcade wouldn't have that kind of room. There is/was a cave game of some sort at the Dave & Busters (this must have been 12 or 13 years ago now) where everybody sat in a simulated flying platform and shot at stuff with light guns. I think you call it a rail shooter?

Is this my old machine? Check the memory. I was unable to get irix to install until I removed one bank of memory and never had a problem since. Try reseating the memory, it's been over two years since I've powered it on.

It never had any 'repeatable' errors or any errors at all once I got it working. I put a 20" box fan blowing on the memory to install irix but memtest 86 in a PC confirmed those sticks were bad (the other two banks checked out OK), so I threw them out. It could be something on the motherboard itself, memory errors aren't typically *that* repeatable as the system will give a program (i.e. maya) different chunks of memory each time the program runs. Right?

As for the OP, if you want the advantages of solid state storage on an Indy you are probably better off going with a SCSI->ATA adapter and a compactflash card. Indy has a SCSI system from 1993 and putting in an SSD will not change that.

I am certainly not an expert, but XFS makes heavy use of buffers. If system memory is not being used for anything else well over half of the memory will be used for the filesystem. Even on Onyx with 2gb of memory... I have seen it using well over 1gb of memory (by gr_osview)

I would try printing it directly on a reflective media, head over to your favorite arts & crafts store and see if they have anything suitable. (this stuff in a laser printer might make for quite a show but be sure to try that over at a friend's house)

We had this sticker stuff at a place I used to work that did work in a laser printer. It had a sort of brushed aluminum finish on it, we used it to make nameplates.

published in 1997 by DIGITAL Press.
Why not read a few IBM books published by IBM press or Microsoft books published by MICROSOFT press?

It may lack some of the personality of SGI
One of the best (certainly most amusing) understatements, ever.
IBM gear has lots of personality... my thinkpad just oozes that perfect badass thinkpad look that ALL thinkpads have, IBM or Lenovo. I even customized it with some contact paper over two years ago and that turned out nice IMO and has held up surprisingly well, thinkpads (ALL Thinkpads) are so sexy to begin with they are hard to improve and easy to screw up. Sometimes the paper is darker than the thinkpad, and sometimes the paper is lighter than the thinkpad. It depends on the light ;)

ot: eMGee, you might not approve of what I did to my alpha to spruce it up  viewtopic.php?f=18&t=16719149&p=7289091&#p7289091 yes, you might call me a 'modder' but rest assured, it is still an alphastation 600 inside, and always will be. I also added black foam air filters to my octane, more of a practical thing but it greatly improved the aesthetic as well. the thread/post eludes me.

It worked the other way around for me, once I learned about IBM gear, I became more and more agitated and repulsed. But especially after learning about IBM itself! (And having to deal with its personnel.)
I guess you have never tried to deal with SGI! IBM was quick to sell me that replacement battery when I called, call under 10 minutes, but I tried to talk to SGI about a monitor cable a few years ago (back when they were still SGI) and I got shuffled around their sales people a bunch, put on hold, talked to the same guy twice, and eventually hung up and bought the damn cable on ebay. Good riddance to SGI, may they rot in hell for having such an incompetent sales team. How do you expect to stay in business when you can't sell your customers your product? HP is the best though. Get your service manual, look up the part number (for me it was dv8000 hinges), type the part # into their site and your CC and address, and the part magically appears a few days later.

I will agree their desktop PCs are crap... for me it came down to the Intellistation A pro or HP xw9300... the IBM was $200, the HP was $500 (for about the same spec, the big difference being IBM had quadro 4500 and SCSI disk, and HP had radeon x300, sata disk... easy to upgrade myself) but the difference was immediately obvious in person. It was just missing on something intangable, and the non-standard two-piece planar (mainboard) turned me off.

So I may be a big thinkpad fan, and a big windows fan, but at least we can agree on something!

I will say it is pretty stupid to base a whole company on one product or bad experience. BUT here we are!

Do you know (by any chance) a Jim Torrence from Ohio?

check out the Onyx wiki page, there is a partial list of Onyx and Challenge boards including part numbers.
http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/Onyx

some of the ones I can spot:
039 is a reality engine 2 frontplane (connects the raster managers to the display generator)
038 is (looks like) an IO3b (crimson I/O)
037 is (looks like) an IP17 (crimson CPU)
034 is a rack onyx power board
033 is a reality engine RM
032 looks like an RE display generator
031 is an RE2 geometry engine
030 is an Onyx IO4
029 is an Onyx SCSI mezz board
026 looks like a crimson/4D backplane
019 looks like an onyx/challengeL disk backplane
013 is a quad IP19 processor board for onyx or challenge, it looks like you are missing a heatsink on a bus asic (2nd from the top)
010 is a dual IP19 processor board
009 is the same as 013 but a different rev
008 is an MC3 memory board, looks like 256MB installed (but I am not positive on the amount)
006 is an MC3 with a laughable amount of memory on it

This is almost fun.
You eat Cadillacs; Lincolns too... Mercurys and Subarus.
006: 030-0607-001: MC3 with a laughable amount of memory on it
--^--Oddly enough the 0607 # doesn't appear on the Wiki page as a board the Challenge/Onyx used.
The list on the wiki is incomplete, I threw it together one day when I got bored. I've added the 0607 to the list.

One thing that would be nice would be to organize photos and link them in the wiki page. We could do this for other machines too :P

Not for me, but vulcan death grip does :( I get the feeling this is perhaps a mouse-focus problem or similar, though I did try changing keyboard focus from 'point-to-type' to 'click-to-type' which had no effect. I'm not sure if there is anything else to change.

I'm running Irix 6.5.22m on IP25 with KONAS graphics. One other feature I find useful for graphics demos like this is the ability to run it in a window, I don't know if this is available or not.

Sorry to be late to the party. It's the 'bored' season here :)

EDIT:

It's not a keyboard focus problem. I tried another one of your programs "thiefs" and while the game plays great, as soon as I hit esc to exit it just freezes. Using the serial console I can killall thiefs and it goes away. sslow is the same, but I had trouble noticing that it had frozen because the graphics move slowly to begin with by design.

If I run thiefs in a window, the same thing happens. I can't kill it with the close window button, nor control-C from tcsh. I need to open another console and killall from there.

I get the feeling something is misconfigured on my system probably the same as agkbill and paulfred. IIRC thiefs worked on my octane (6.5.29). Slowspheres might suffer from the same issue.

Output of versions confirms I have the correct versions of all dependencies installed.

My old octane power supply would click violently during some operations, mainly anything that took a lot of HPs :D or time to redraw would cause the machine to click in sync with the screen redraws. That power supply has been recycled...

It could be fun to see which programs cause the noise and how to trigger it. Then you can pin down where the problem is. OTOH you should probably just repace it.

It is almost certainly not arcing. You need to figure out where the noise is coming from. It could be something like a choke where the epoxy cracked and now vibrates. Who knows maybe there actually IS an internal speaker in the onyx2 ?

I should make a recording of some of the sounds my alphastation 600 makes. Now that is a machine I will not leave running unattended

So, I started my octane up last night for the first time in a little over two weeks and it made a horribly disgusting screech for the first 2-3 seconds or so and then climbed in pitch until I could no longer hear it. Then the breaker tripped because I forgot to turn off the heater first  This is the new cherokee, it could well just be the first time starting it without music playing and it always does that... Ran all night and this morning with no problem.

The old-style supply definitely clicked, mainly when running programs such as bzflag or glx-rss savers. It stopped when I upgraded to a v6.

Do you think the relay is actually stuck or do you think the relay is fine and it is just turning on/off rapidly for some bizzare reason?

"InfiniteReality Graphics - Power Through Complexity"
I highly doubt just changing out the relays will solve the problem, they must have DC coils. (I have heard relays with AC coils make similar noises when they are stuck)

Have you tried checking the sample rates in the audio control panel to see that they are all the same as what vroom is outputting? It could be that maybe vroom wants the hardware at 32khz (for example) but it is set at 44.1 khz, and vroom can't change this automatically.

Now that I think about it, it sounds like a sample rate problem...

So a couple people here have a sizeable SGI collection, so most people here can perhaps relate. Or a Porsche collection, even if they are scale models :) . Or stamps. Here's one that is interesting: Concorde service items. Most of the sentiments here I can relate to. Maybe others can as well:
http://www.core77.com/blog/featured_ite ... _17572.asp
My friends call it my "Concorde thing" and some joke about the size of the collection (I have service for 16, including full placesettings down to the official linen napkins and placemats, plus a bevy of serving utensils, a thermos, coffee pot, creamers, salt & pepper shakers, etc.). Although I have a bunch of the official Concorde gift items, including some from earlier fittings, the focus of my collection is on the in-flight food service. After all, that's really what the experience was about.

Still others are into old cars or hifis or guitars or whatever. I also have maybe a half dozen lenses for my Minolta xd11 and a bunch of other accessories for it, but collecting camera equipment is fairly common. So we can discuss that some other day. (plus most of that is currently in storage... six time zones away from me... I'll be sure to pick it up in the spring. There's a 135mm prime and big flash here, for some reason)

Yup, I'm a youngin', so my first was actually the 2006. The 2002 just showed up today (shipped from egypt was a bit hair-raising) after keeping an eye open for a good three years now (and the inspiration for this post. Actually, AJ poked and prodded me to share...). Most are too expensive, damaged, framed, autographed, have some random stranger's name on the back, fake, etc. I'm still looking for 1998 and 1990, but I'm not in a rush. As a matter of fact I don't really actively look for anything. I have two 2010s because I bought the real one and then won the 'replica' (POS)...

I also have a bunch of club shirts, but those tend to come and go. I realized after taking this photo, my messi barca shirt is in the wash. What else... these are kind of a work in progress... I have the MJOLNIR MKVI from halo 2 I sculpted, out of fiberglass and bondo. Fits me great, built it cheap for Halloween one year. IMO they are cool chilling on the hifi.

I also have (this is the work in progress) the Hayabusa from halo 3. This one I tried carbon fiber (instead of glass fiber) and bondo. Doesn't seem much lighter than the MKVI but definitely stronger. Not finished yet. I haven't worked on it in about a year. :/ I need to redo the collar/neckplate and the crown needs to be smoothed out some more. I do know it will be pearl white with an Oakley G30 (another one of those finishes you need to ‘see in person’) visor when it is finished. But I do not know *when* it will be finished. :) Of course, with no deadline, it could be years from now :) It deviates quite a bit from the actual game model though, so it fits properly onto my human head.
