Not apropos of anything in this thread, but that is the best quote-worthy line I have seen in a while.

Well played! :D

Where are you located? If you are near Minneapolis, I could make your wish come true :-)

Too bad you're not still in Mantorville - we could talk about your Mac Pro :-)

Your Onyx is still nestled in the basement. I changed over one of the power bricks to 110v and have brought up a subset of the machine this winter. So far so good.

Never used the zune service tho. I buy mp3's from amazon and borrow CDs. and tapes, vinyl, listen to the radio, etc.

You can convert from AAC to MP3 very easily - select one or more tracks in your library, right click and choose "Create MP3 version"

This is what I do to get songs on a USB stick for playing in my Kia Soul. It's easier than using the iPod integration with my iPhone.

Transcoding is possible, but nobody should ever do it. Ever.

Just had to say that.

Well, if I were always in my acoustically perfect room, in my plush leather chair with a snifter of brandy, I would agree.

However, in my little go-kart car at 80 MPH on the highway, I'm not as concerned that I'm getting perfect fidelity. :)

I totally agree that what works for me might not work for you.

Which particular Sun LCDs do you have?
:O2: :Indigo: :Cube: Image
It's a Proliant 8000 (or 8500). I had a couple of them at a previous job. They were the cat's meow in 1999/2000 - and yes, they were about $100K each.

IIRC, we ran Win2K Server on them. I don't remember their being any really exotic drivers, but there might have been a HAL disk to manage the 8-way procs.

I have one of the Sun 24.1" LCDs that I like a lot. Has DVI and 13W3 inputs. 1920x1200 resolution.

I also like the legs being "outboard" instead of a center stand. Lets me put speakers, USB hub, etc. conveniently under the monitor.

They pop up on eBay from time to time. Currently there's item #330738674624 as an example, but get one that works and comes with the external power supply :)

And I have a 1964 MGB, but it will likely be going away in favor of my 'new' 1948 International Harvester KB-2 pickup truck.

What's the plan - Resto or rod?

Resto. I learned to drive in a different but identical truck back in the day on my uncle's farm in the wilds of South Dakota. Ready for some straight-six, granny-low, double-clutching fun :)

I'm sure your Sunbeam Alpine will be just as nice when you get it running again, tux. This summer I found a Porsche mechanic who makes house calls, and he got my 914/6 running again. If I ever figure out what I want to do about the knackered gearbox, I might actually start to make progress next year...

Ah yes, the clouds of oily smoke that draw the neighbors to ask "What's going on?!" and you proudly reply "Progress!"

My neighbors stopped asking two cars and one motorcycle ago :-)

Thanks for all the replies, guys. One less boat anchor under my desk, and I finally have a functioning RISC system.

I tried setting that, although I apparently did it wrong. After logging into other accounts it starts up just fine but my mouse is acting up and barely moves the cursor (I am using a Sun optical mouse pad, so I have no idea) so it is for the moment unusable, and I'm using a serial console instead to save desk space.

You could have the wrong pad for the mouse. I forget the cutoffs, but the pad/grid density for the Sun optical mice changed in the Sun 3/Sun 4 era. Having the wrong pad acts much as you describe. If you can find any Sun ball mouse that uses the DIN connector you should be fine.

Also, search the 'net for PDF's of the different Sun mouse pad grids. You can print them on shiny paper and they work pretty well. You should be able to find the two different kinds and see what works.

A South Minneapolis boy like me would tell you that 66th and Penn is Richfield, not Minneapolis, no matter what the map may say ;)

Depending on when this happened, he could have drowned his sorrows in roast beef and Jamocha shakes at the Arby's.

If, however, you are suffering from nostalgia, a car place here in Northfield (where I live now) has a baby blue Lincoln TC of that era sitting out in pride of place in their lot. I'm sure you could make a deal!

After reading about this on 68kmla.org I've ordered some Savvio drives and narrow adapters to try and revive some older Macs and Sun LX and IPX. I'll report back what I find. I figure if there are problems it's going to be around termination - but isn't it aways with SCSI? :-)

I agree with smj that while these might be overkill in one sense, they are a very attractive alternative vs. period drives to get these machines back up and running.
:O2: :Indigo: :Cube: Image
I received my lot of seven 2.5" Savvio drives yesterday. Tonight, using a 50 pin to SCA adapter, I was able to partition and format filesystems on an older Mac with all the drives

I then put one of the drives in a Sparc 20 (which is SCA) and it was able to see/format the drive without issue. These drives are nice and quiet as well.

So - I'd say so far so good! As discussed, physical mounting will be an issue in some machines. Hopefully, termination won't be a big problem using the narrow adapters. Most of these drives will end up helping to resurrect a lot of my classic Apple gear.

ClassicHasClass,

This is awesome! I have two of these guys (which may be one too many). One is running BSD, since I didn't have the AIX media, but I've since come into the original software set for these guys and have been intending to set up #2 with a "stock" install.

If anyone within pickup distance of Minneapolis wants one of these guys, I can probably be persuaded to part with one for trades for other vintage Apple gear, etc. I do need to fire it up and make sure there are no issues, etc. but it should be OK.

Running off now to go through CHC's website...

ClassicHasClass wrote: How is BSD on your ANS? Do you have a video card in it, or just use serial?

I have a video card in mine, but using the onboard video/keyboard for console is flakey (and is called out to be so in the doc) for reasons I can't remember now. I usually just run it headless, but if I need a console, I just plug in a Mac Plus or SE running Zterm or equivalent and that works fine as a console.

NetBSD runs great, but I don't fire the machine up much these days so I know I'm way behind on updates/patches. With the RAID card, disk I/O is pretty good. CPU can bog down with anything compute intensive, as you probably know ;)
:O2: :Indigo: :Cube: Image
I have one. It works great!

Between it and the CFFA card for the Apple ][ it's much easier to hoard ...er, manage media for these older machines.

josehill wrote: My old SE/30 really wants to run A/UX again, too. Just haven't gotten around to it.

Anyone know if A/UX supported the old Micron Xceed video cards? My SE/30 has a card in it that it didn't have when it last ran A/UX. ;)

You should just sell the Xceed to me! :D
:O2: :Indigo: :Cube: Image
Regular HD screws will work. As long as they protrude a couple millimeters and the heads aren't too big to fit in the channels in the case, just about any screw that's threaded correctly will serve.

Yes - Charles is "the man".

CHC - you rock!
:O2: :Indigo: :Cube: Image
As far as the AT&T resemblance, I think you are thinking of FACES. It was a way to do "graphical" interfaces on character terminals. Would look really icky if you didn't have the correct termcap entry for the device on which you were running it.
:O2: :Indigo: :Cube: Image
IIRC, with the Britelites you put an actual IPX logicboard in there. I don't remember how they brought video to the laptop screen - perhaps an SBUS card/connector.

Have fun finding a SCSI drive to drop in that thing, especially if it requires a 2.5" drive.
:O2: :Indigo: :Cube: Image
smj wrote: That was a serious problem, but there are workarounds these days. Like the SCS2SD Powerbook Edition 2.5" SCSI to MicroSD adapter.

True, but those options can be hard to source as well some times.

We are pretty lucky these days, though, with Rich Dreher's CFFA cards for the Apple ][, the FloppyEmu for Macs from BigMessoWires, and the SCSI2SD boards from codesrc, as well as others. Makes storage and use of old software easy, and revitalizes some of these old machines from a usability standpoint.

Seems that Cycle did in fact make UltraSparc upgrades for the Aurora chassis:

Intel Xserve is tolerable for a 1U. G5 is worse, but G4 was way too loud (for me) to be in the same room.

Question along with kev009 - what's up with the rest of the collection? I have contacts in Austin that I can activate if there is other stuff available.

Sadly, an Onyx would be too much to handle...

I have this floppy at home. I can make you an image if you wish. However, I believe it's just a normally formatted Mac floppy, with the executables copied onto it. IIRC, the "backup" instructions for this and the config floppy was to format a floppy in a Mac, and then copy the contents of the old disk onto the new disk.

In any event, ping me in a PM and I should be able to help you out. I used mine to set up a new RAID on one of my ANS' this spring, so I know it works :-)
