Still, it was nice to read some favorable coverage for a change.

If Rackable didn't come out with products like the Octane III and the Origin 400, you might hear fewer negative comments :(

Most SGI lovers really wanted them to do well but they seem pretty talented at butchering (what remained of) the SGI mystique.

I'd give it a while. Rackable might actually , or perhaps surprise us by producing workstations for us power hungry users. Nekochan
does draw a fair amount of attention. So maybe they'll keep us in mind when producing new RISC hardware lol.

Ryan Fox, that'd be amazing and almost a ‘dream’ come true. I won't be counting on it, but like you say, who knows. (I know this site draws attention, because a lot of people I speak to — interested in UNIX and UNIX-like/derived systems — have often heard of this place.)

-shrugs- Hey its a dream. BUT even if it is an Intel based desktop machine with NUMA, or some high end version of application of PCI express, utilizing multiple processor boards, multiple off the shelf NVIDIA GPUs and gawd forbid the next generation of 3D LED LCDs running some form of linux all on one box... phew. EVEN if it costs twice the price of the latest fully loaded Mac Pro.. I'd still buy it just because its a Sgi.
The desktop market is a viable option if you desire to generate some serious wide-spread interest. Its expensive, but a great deal cheaper than buying a rack-based system. Its an affordable, powerful solution with a small footprint. -shrugs- Just a thought ^^

BTW Nekochan has even got folks here in South Africa interested. There are quite a few local film studios still actively using SGI gear!

Hmm reminds me of something i've seen in the Maya Visor. Some great examples to test the performance of a machine, or compare it to modern hardware. MY Onyx2s seem pretty fast for their age, and still VERY capable of handling complex poly models.

As recondas mentioned: Whip out a serial terminal or fire up HyperTerm and go through the usual PROM clearing and updating procedures. Saved me many hours of irritation. Also if you wait I can provide information on how to disable extensive memory

Try checking your SCSI back pane .. seems pretty obvious where the issue lies.
Either that or your onboard controller gave up the ghost.

Yipe! try to avoid getting gob on the compression connector.Blowing not recommended :P
If all else fails, get a can of compressed air, and
some contact cleaner. Or just remove the compression connector from the board and soak in pure alcohol.
Did that on some dysfunctional node boards, worked like a charm. lol

Right on! I still use Maya 6.5 under IRIX on my well matured Onyx2s
Last version i have is 2008, not willing to move on until I've done some serious work.

Anyhow.. a draft test render from my last Sgi Maya project.

Its actually quite scary how many software packages are out there with pre-built solutions that any idiot can modify, or buy a box of models... Its like clip art. Crap. Sure .. its a means to quickly create something 'visual' and 'pretty', but as soon as you want to add more realism, or detail, or motion, fluids.. etc its problem. Motion capture is great! Sure it takes the dog work out of animation , but tends to leave messy key frames. Its almost impossible to alter anything without cleaning up the data. It limits you in what
style you'd like to animate in. Expression exaggeration, etc.. FaceStation for example is pretty incredible, but using good old blend shapes and a little mel/python scripting tends to give you far more control.

I still prefer cad programs. If you want to make a box that's 3' x 4' x 6' it's easy. Who knows how big that thing is in Maya ?

Until you get an autocad drawing not made in autocad which is scaled different than any standard, 3 different ways, none of which are documented. That happened to us a few weeks ago.

"Maybe it's the print setting?" "no." "It's metric, isn't it?" "yes." "maybe their metric is actually inches?" "no." "Maybe there's another scale somewhere?" "probably, look, you know this beam is supposed to be 17.4 meters so just scale everything to that." "It won't scale." "What?"

Turns out the whole drawing was in some sort of read-only container file that had been imported into a dwg by a 3rd program different than autocad and the program used for the drawing. Yes, cad programs are wonderful; but nobody "plays with them for fun" for a reason.

You can specify unit size, So one maya unit can be set to 1m, 1cm, 1 inch and so on. Read the manual :P
Or if you're stuck ask Autodesk ^^

I recall that in SUN Blade 1Ks you can disable or disallow PROM writes, Now I haven't opened my Octanes in a
while. The only thing I can think of is a jumper located near the back of the board on the left of the CPU, 'Disable/Enable Password' and another located near the front underneath the CPU module (dual config)

Need to consult the Sgi Tech docs

Hmm capacitors have a tendency to 'bulge' near the top when they reach the end of their lives.
Look for any such signs and replace them. If need be, replace them all.

I recall when I tried to run Gentoo on a R12k400 octane. Got it installed, but had no X support at the time.
The hardware that I'll try this on again is a Sun Ultra, with the Elite M3 or some other 'supported' frame buffer.
FreeBSD on Sun SPARC looks promising though ...

Ha, been there as well. That machine is in great shape. Nice find! Seems as though the east coast if flush with O2k desksides, would love to have one of these.

After the second one she simply just gave up lol

Does an Onyx2 have an internal speaker? If so, where is it?

I didn't think it would but when running apps that use audio, certain sounds cause my Onyx2 to emit a nasty crackling noise. The workstation never emits any other sounds, such as boot chimes. (Other than fan noise, of course!) It doesn't matter if I have external speakers plugged in or not. External speakers do work properly with this machine.

Only certain clangy/crashy sounds do this, for example, when a tank is shot in bz or pretty much any sound when flying around in vroom . At first it sounded like electrical arcing but it seems more likely there's a ripped speaker cone somewhere in the chassis.

I thought someone here might know something before I tear the thing apart to find it.

Guess this is my month to ask SGI audio questions!

Trust me there's no internal speaker in an Onyx2. And the sounds you're hearing might be your power supply.
This could get nasty... Either replace it, or have the capacitors replaced by a professional.
Or on a lighter note, there might be something loose making contact with the fans in the fan tray

for these machines ^^

It could be fun to see which programs cause the noise and how to trigger it. Then you can pin down where the problem is. OTOH you should probably just repace it.

Heh I really think it depends on resource loads, still easier to open the PSU, head down to your local electronics store
or radio shack. I fixed my second Ony2's PSU that way... cap discharge can be painful though lol

She was like 'Oh gawd you're not putting that in there!' Yip had an ear full when I cleaned up my Octanes and Onyx2 parts.
Y'know you can even pop the motherboards and cards in the dishwasher, blowdry or
briefly bake them to dry.

BTW I did the exact same thing to my 1st generation XBox360. Its was completely dead
ROD was the least that was wrong with it. So.. I washed it in a chemical bath, and baked the bugger till well done at 190C for about 12 minutes , however I have already purchased a second console , I now have two, one for the bedroom and another for the lounge lol.
Its been over a year now and its 100% purrfect.
In some cases Toaster Oven Reflow Soldering works XD

Its just such a pity that Sgi didn't continue providing 'affordable' workstation solutions. Imagine if you could buy
a workstation powered by a modern MIPS R2xK and PCIE graphics options ... -sighs- Maybe IRIX would have gone
