In this sense, I got to share with you a few pictures that should state a bit about the reciprocal activities between our countries... you know... you had the ARA Libertad, and we had this... the following picts are from the USS 'xxxx' (yes, what a shame, I can't recall the real previous USS name of this ship)

[EDIT: Well; I've asked it to my wife, and she said that the official that I've asked about the real USS name of the ship said that he could not answer this question for us... and yes, I recall it now. She's right.]

We visited it a couple weeks ago with the family. This ship was built (of course) and owned by U.S.A., before to get here his second life as institutional ship.

[EDIT: I mean, it is used for civilian/educational purposes... as institutional events, training, and things like that.]

And a couple more things that were way cool but I can't post here because some of my family is there, or even me, right in the middle of the frame! :) There more pictures, yes. The ship looks incredibly well conserved, and I liked it a lot. I'd buy me one if I could! :D

Yes, it is ready to work. They projected very emotive sequences of video all over the face of the Teatro by using pretty sophisticated gear and techniques, same as they do all over the face of the Cabildo, and the rocks and mountains from El Valle De La Luna. Very cool. I guess it was the first time it was done in this way for a patriot event in this country. We also had visits from representatives from many other countries, ranging all kinds of levels; figures from culture, different sciences... and of course... you can't kick them out: all kind of politicians! :)

Saludos Fu Manchu! ;)

I don't know if you already know about this... but there is an old trick from old time photographs that works perfectly, and you can use your own actual lens.

It is originally called reverse mounting adapter... and in fact there are ready-made units for cheap. Pretty much this: 58mm Reverse Macro Adapter

I've never tried it with a zoom, but I can testify that it works like a charm with pretty much any normal prime lens... but I'm pretty sure it will work well too.

Then if you want to go for a more artisans path, you can add an auto bellows to you existing lens too... it works like a charm! I've tried it too: here is something like that , just for Nikon. They are not cheap, but they are excellent! You can do pretty much anything you want... no limits with it.

And then you can go for just another cheap route, as in the reverse mounting adapter, just adding a lens adapter at the front of your actual lens... they sell as kits of three or four front-lenses with a thread that fits your existing lens, pretty much as a filter works. They usually come in kits with +1, +2, and +4 Diopters front lenses. Just like that . From the three mentioned methods this is the lowest image quality one, but it still works fine for many things... I've tried it too!

Or... you can buy a macro lens as you intented from the start! That's another way to look at it!
And if you already knows all of the above, then perhaps someone else could find it useful... you know! :)
All the best,
Diego

No problem, just let me know. I've visited a couple minutes ago both of the sites that I know for Teatro Colon, and you're right... there are no sections for english... of course you could try Google Translate too... but you know that it will not be too precise... but still:

TeatroColon.Org.Ar

Colon.Is.Com.Ar

Well, I have not a big knowledgement about the Colon, but anyway I'm sure that they'll launch some kind of international site soon... one of the above websites mentions something about that...

I can understand some uneasiness about packages getting lost halfway around the world or being grafted by some Argentine Customs crooks or trashed by the Italian post office but Canada ? Silly.

Hey there!
...well, just for the record, and given the opposite situation, I have to say that shipping internationally from Argentine is slightly more complex than shipping locally inside the country. The reason is: you can ship locally from any post office around your town; but you only can ship internationally from the main post office.

For my own case this is not too far (5 Kmts.) and considering that there is only one main post office for each city, I guess things can be a lot worst for other people. I know from people at 100 Kmts. from it or more. On the other hand, there is a standard post office at less than 500 Mts. from here... so, as you can see... at least in this case there is a real difference between both cases. Add to this, you need to fill a form which will need your own signature.

So, if you ask... I can understand people refusing to take those extra cares to ship one package. Anyway, and despite of this fact... I've never refused myself any international shipping! :)

Anyway I feel way weird by using the tweets thingy... I'm in fact way surprised of myself by doing it! But me thinks this is a nice change! :D

I was just joking ( "we need a bigger one" ). The video, alone by itself is amazing enough if you excercise a bit your imagination... in fact, viewing it maxed out on my 22" monitor was very impressive, specially if you can add some nice audio system to it. Yeah, of course, nothing compares to a nice on-site watching, but since I'm in Argentina I feel lucky enough! :)

It should not be difficult at all if it awakes some interest between the forum members. Count me in to contribute some money if the project advances. This is one of the more interesting additions we could count for IRIX.
josehill wrote:

Regan's right. If people are serious, someone who knows what they are doing from a development perspective should identify a small, but meaningful piece of work, make that the first project, demonstrate success, and then proceed from there.

I agree with you. A small sample should rise the expectations a lot, and will probe the available firepower to the more hesitant. Mass storage is one of the biggest problems when you can't have good access to big/fast SCSI drives, and let's be honest: SCSI is everyday older, and the bigger sized drives are not so common for some countries... and the second hand market vary a lot.

Would not be fantastic to be able to use the same widely available drives from PeeCees?
zizban wrote: What do you suggest should be the first small step then?

A user space device driver for some world-wide popular and easily available COTS USB PCI Card? ...then a kernel driver for the same card? ...and then a 08h device driver for the mass storage class? What do you think?

[EDIT:] there is some well condensed information from X-Ample related to RISC OS about: USB Classes and of course the official one from Class Codes ...but I'm sure you know about them! :) [EDIT]

It is not the unit that Hamei pointed up at some post, but looks perfect for the occasion. Any reports to confirm that it works reliably on any SGI box (I can't see why not!) with IRIX?

If these thing works... do we really need an USB Stack? I guess it is time to experience it, to see what is supported and what not. But it looks positively... positive! :)

No problem, I'm kinda an entrepreneur, so I guess I'm asking just out of curiosity since your board looks interestingly cool not only to allow USB over Ethernet on an SGI box, but also to try some other activities here. Good to know you ship over here.

Well, if you can add a Parallel Port while you're at it, it would be very cool too! :-) ...you know: RTAI and a Parallel Port will make it a killer platform to develop some easily automated power appliances too.

I don't know if this is strictly related with SGI Hardware, but I recall a few products from Abekas for SGI... anyway, it seemed to me that maybe I should post it because someone else could find it interesting:

Abekas A82/A83 Upstand Composite Video Switcher Control

I'm not related with the ítem or the seller at all, or at least nothing more than you are by receiveing their "Check out the latest items from your favorite sellers on eBay" in your eMail box! :)
Enjoy it!
fieldframe wrote: This Abekas beastie doesn't interface with an SGI, but the A60 and A66 video disk recorders do. The A60 (which holds 30 seconds uncompressed standard def video) and A66 (a whole 60 seconds!) connect to a standard ethernet network and you can rcp individual Quantel/Abekas .yuv frames to and from them. I believe you can connect the A66 via SCSI as well. I know the guy who developed the ethernet interface for the A60, he also developed quite a lot of other broadcast stuff for Quantel and SGI over the years.

The A60 was quite a monster, both in terms of rack space and electricity consumption.

Interesting, I knew a bit from the A60 and A66 because of a few brochure papers I had, but nothing about the A82/A83. Things like Abekas or even Chyron never were too popular here in Argentina, despite the fact I know about a few TV Channels here that used Abekas with SGI.

In fact once upon a time I've investigated if I could trick one of their DVR's to use something bigger than the standard couple of 4.5 GB SCSI disks. Of course I'm talking about many years ago, and I could not even tell you the name of such systems! :)
Well, I really like how it looks when you wikify the kind of forum contents that one should consider permanent or stable, but I need to confess that I find myself very tedious the editing process for the Wiki pages.

So, if anyone else wants to do it, I'll be more than happy! :)

zafunk wrote: I'm with Jose. Wikify the aggregators and keep the individual threads going for discussion purposes.

Ditto!

I'm half-active with the MIPS/IRIX world, mostly because I'm doing almost all with PeeCees and Ubuntu, but I really want to keep the IRIX platform alive because here and there I spend time with it... sometimes, lots of time.
I think ideally, any kind of well stablished and highly mature forum as Nekochan is, should include some kind of bots army running in background to condensate/summarize the permanent and/or stable contents into some Wiki variant.

I've always thought it should be that way for many reasons. The more formal style from Wiki contributes to a higher degree of order and structuration, has hierarchical menue entries, and from a casual standpoint it looks clearer than any forums, to not mention that it will be probably indexed faster by Google and all the rest.

I guess the only caveat is... I don't know (at least yet) from any kind of bot capable to do such task... so, you got to go over these little dialect one has to recall each time some editing is required... and when you're not doing it too frequently at all, some people (me!) could find it a bit difficult to retain or recall... :)

So, to put it clear: I really like the Wiki style and/or look and feel for things like that... but I'd have to go and try again...
josehill wrote: Since long articles can be a little unwieldy to edit, I suggest creating new sub-categories for each wikified O2/Octane/Fuel Aggregator within the wiki Hardware: SGI Workstations category. Something like:

  • Hardware: SGI Workstations: O2 Compatible Hardware
  • Hardware: SGI Workstations: Octane Compatible Hardware
  • Hardware: SGI Workstations: Fuel Compatible Hardware

Within each of those categories would be individual articles for each class of component or peripheral.

IMHO it is a very, very, nice idea! I always thought of the the aggregators as some kind of middle stage before to reach the state of a definitive Hardware Compatibility List or something like that.
fu wrote: after some bar-hoping google-hoping, your suggestions took me to Gwennel Web (win only, wysiwyg), MAMP (mac) & XAMP (win/mac/loon/solaris) for those who may want to run+test wikis locally). haven't tried any of them

Would not be necessary an inverted version of these converter?

I don't know if it can be used inverted with a suitable set of adapters, probably yes because both protocols and physical interfaces should be bi-directional, but you'll need for sure a power supply on the USB side...

[EDIT] I've extended some concepts...[/EDIT]
