Happy Holidays, everybody!
zagnut wrote: I'll contribute...

Thanks, zagnut, it is added at the bottom.
Greetz for you and all the forum folks! ;)
Hey guys, thanks for the warm re-welcome! Nice to see you all, foetz, zagnut, josehill, I'm glad to be in touch with you all! Let's be ready for more funny syntax, because i've not exercised too much my english lately! :D

Out of joke: I'm very pleased, greetz!

zagnut wrote: Thank you. I can't truly confirm, however these modules were installed in the Octane I obtained yesterday. I will confirm for sure once I can get the system booted in a few days. Need a serial cable to access PROM I'm told since I do not have 13w3 cable as of yet.

Thanks to you, and hey, best of lucks with your new Octane! Hope the best! ;-)
So, what is this thing? Do you know? Tell me! :)

robespierre wrote: looks a lot like a hole saw.

That was my first thought, maybe one with Quick-Lock or anything like that (look at the dual sided chamfer) but I'm still not sure. Anyone knows for sure? :)
Oskar45 wrote: No idea, but in the non-human world wheels (?) have evolved only once.

Hahah!, good point, Oskar45! ...we could consider it solved, because a wheel it is! :-)
Greetz!

P.S.: ...but now, seriously: anyone? 8-)
vishnu wrote: It's a toothed coupler, typically used to connect a motor to something that needs power, like a pump or... Something! :P

Yes, I thought about it too, and I'm very familiarized with such kind of semi flexible couplers. But then, does not looks slightly too narrow the gap betweet tooths? :)
Hey, by the way: Happy Independence Day to the U.S., and Happy Birthday to myself... yep... it is today! :-)
uunix wrote: Happy birthday chap..

Thanks! It was a fun little party! :)

josehill wrote: I just launched a pyrotechnic device in your honor, Diego! Cheers!

That explains it all, josehill... I was curious, because at first sight I thought someone was greeting to our National Futbol Team with fireworks, but then, on last minutes I noticed how wrong I was! :D Whatever; congrats to the Chile Futbol Team! Chapeau! :D

Hey!, thanks for the fireworks! ;)
zagnut wrote: First glance looks like a coupler...but I dont believe so.

Me neither! :-)

zagnut wrote: If you look again, you will see wear marks running perpendicular on the teeth, around the OD/circumference. So the outside has rubbed against another surface. Having CNC experience, this is indicative of being a tool of some kind to me. Quite possibly part of a collet system to hold a tool is what I believe it is.

If it serves as a new set of clues...

There are also wear marks running around the ID/circumference.

The shank ends into a diameter close to 11.15mm, pretty close to the end from a Morse Taper #2, but it is cilindrical.

zagnut wrote: I can't tell in the pictures, but is it tapered?

There is no thread.

zagnut wrote: With the opening getting smaller towards the end of the "teeth"?

Nope!

zagnut wrote: If so, I'd be 99.9% certain it is a collet. The wear marks would be caused by the collar that goes over it, used to tighten/"close" the teeth around the tooling it was meant to hold.

Well, the shank suggests something suited for Quick Change, I think that is a fact.

But hey!, what about some kind of nautical capstan, or ratchet mechanism?
guardian452 wrote: I would guess... rotary encoder.

Hey!, good catch! ...but why would you charge with such a mass the device to sense? And have you noticed the tiny holes all around the shank? Does not looks like the classic spring loaded Ball-Lock to provide some audio/mechanical feedback to some kind of crank-loaded device?
Three new clues! :)

zagnut wrote: Happy late birthday Diego!!!

Thanks!, there is still some pie at the fridge anyway! :)

zagnut wrote: Perpendicular wear marks in the ID could be indicative of a tool holder as well.

Sure, but I think the teeth are slightly too hard and too short for a collet or tool holder.

zagnut wrote: Nautical capstan or ratcheting device....hmmmm, possibly. I'm not familiar with anything nautical however.

Think of it as the place to attach some removable crank!

zagnut wrote: How about possibly some type of centrifugal clutch, the inner race?

That looks like a BIG possibility too! :)
Hello there, Good People!

It seems I was out of touch, quite a lot, but it is always a pleasure when appears in my InBox a new "ring-ring" from Nekochan.Net! ;-)

Sure, I guess you can add stuff in the replies, if Pete (The Boss) allows it.
I'll add your stuff to the list, anyway.

Peace and love for all The Fabulous Nekochan Community!
Greetz!

- PS/2 Mice/Keyboards:
3. Dell SK-8100 (not sure of the year, but it has Windows keys)
4. Logitech M-SBF96 (optical wheel mouse)

- Monitors?
?: Teorder VGA to HDMI (B01MSTDUCH) - 1280x1024 @ 60Hz, requires proper 13w3 to VGA adapter, but every HDMI panel I have tried has worked
dexter1 wrote: I think it will be fine. And welcome back Generatrix, long time no see :)

Hello there, Dexter! Thanks for the warm welcome! How is the crew? Greetz! ;-)
I seem to recall it was ported a few years ago. In fact I think I installed and tried it on Octane around five years ago. Have you browsed the other folders from NekoWare mirrors?

Hahaha! Same here! Oh, yup... fat is a fact! :-D

dexter1 wrote: We're fine, but with grey beards, grown up kids and a bit more fat around the waist.
And reloaded! :D
How are you, Foetz! I'm happy to see the crew again!

foetz wrote: yay diego, you're back :D
Hello everybody! :-D

mapesdhs wrote: Fat? I am not sitting here with a mug of choccy milk! Oh dammit... :}

This year will be 30 years since I first went to uni, which my brain insists is completely ridiculous. Certified old git.

Ian.

Hahaha! No chocco over my desk, but I swear I can't live without empanadas and pizza! :D
Hello there, Ian! How are you?

If you haven't been here in a while (it looks like you haven't been too active since 2013), this might surprise you:
The only MIPS SGI workstation released during my lifetime was the Tezro.

Welcome back!

Hi and thanks, Dodoid! Yes, I knew pretty well about Tezro... in fact, a few of them reached my country a few years ago, the most prominent one, a Quad/Desktop version, in the Instituto Di Tella ... and if everything is fine "she" should be still there! :D

HurricaneJames wrote: Wow, all this good stuff just from trying out a cheap keyboard! Welcome back!

Haha, pretty much the same here, HurricaneJames: I've started with a trade, swapping my Intel Columbus II for a shiny Indy!

I think I'm going to go to the park, sit on a bench, and feed the pigeons for the rest of the day.

PS. Always happy to see Diego back on Nekochan!

Hehehe! Hello there, Jose! I'm very happy to see you too! Don't go with the pigeons, you can always get a 9x20 lathe, and dig for stuff to turn...
...you know: the next good good thing in the world to make for a happy wife are those greasy helical metal chips! :D :D :D
Since we are on the IRIX/MIPS subject, and in case somebody notice, I'm probably very rusty in any matters related to the nice Silicon Graphics world, and in fact I must say that I do not have at hand any type of equipment related.

The last machine I had left, an Octane by no means maxed-out, was sold after the fire in my house. The two-story building, which was family home and workplace, burned in flames in an accident about four years ago. We had no insurance against fire, or anything else, and we had to sell pretty much every valuable item rescued after the firefighters. Among other things we saved, there was that last machine with its peripherals. And, as you can guess, broken as I was, I had to sell all that lot (and many other things of relative value that were rescued) to start the reconstruction works over the burnt building.

So, I no longer have events, business, or experiences, in any way related to such subject. Only good memories about that... sorry.

But the page was turned, he fire was left behind, and we (my family, and me) managed to rise very healthy from the incident, and we are about to finish the rebuilding of the building.

And with that changed many things... including my job/works, and maybe at some extent, topics of conversation. For good or ill, that extreme experience led me to discover the benefits of metalworking, the mystique behind the glow and sparks of electric welding equipment, and the charm of milling machines and lathes! :-) And for almost four years, I invest every free minute to train myself and improve my skills in it!

I'm right now swimming what I call "A Leetcha Stage" into the 9x20 lathe scene. Never posted a word about the subject, because I consider myself an apprentice! :-D

I'm on the stage where you only buy more and more things about the subject, trying to learn fast how to use them.

On the other hand, I have acquired good skills on LinuxCNC, and even armed some three and four axis control centers. But I still have not been able to find the (extensive) time required to automate my own milling machine and lathe. That and some Android, LinuxMint, and Ubuntu, are my actual dancing steps related with computer science.

So, do not be angry with me if I do not have much to contribute on the IRIX/MIPS subject. Or if my english is even more rusty than was then. As I said, the only (physical) thing I keep from that beautiful time is a very big box of original CDROM's, including the "Deveoper Program Plus" software pack, "Overlays", and more... which resisted the flames among shelves of a metal shelf, but I have not even been able to verify that they still work.

There we are! :D
