Cool, I'm not all that of a Blender's fan as I've used to be in the past... (well, not even in the past!) but I'll give it a try with Linux, because I have some old Blender models stuck on an older release without any reliable way to translate to a more friendly environment.

Old thread I know, but I must have skipped over this before. Diego, how weer you able to get the Targa cards working under Win 2K? They weren't supported past NT and all the questions I've ever seen regarding running them under 2000 were responded to with the answer that it was impossible.

Hey there, QuicksilverG4.

Well... to be honest, you'll not need to do nothing special at all. The fact is, that Win2KPro does not seem to reckon the Targa as a Plug-N-Play device, so the resources are basically unassigned... so, the key is simply try your board with every assgination of resources available on the Multimedia Tabs from Win2KPro, while you try all of those combinations with each free PCI slot.

[EDIT] ...and eventually you'll find a given setup that works as expected! [/EDIT]

Lots of users fail to obtain any success simply because the mainboard that they are using is assigning the PCI resources on a different way than the expected by the driver. But believe me... this is the only trick.

[EDIT] ...and I fail to see a fix for such kind of situations, but I'm sure they are a weird minory. [/EDIT]

At some point there was some kind of unnofficial couple of *.dll and *.sys files, to replace some original files... but none of them worked for me. Despite the fact that with those files the Targa board effectively appeared listed in the Hardware Explorer, as soon as any app using the board was launched, the driver crashed every time.

Please, bear in mind that I'm talking about things experimented by me about 12 years ago... but since I've offered support for a few customers, I'm completely sure that this was the way in which worked. Just try it, and if you happen to find any problem, feel free to drop me a P.M.

Also, it is not as if the Targa were the more stable A/V board over the planet... but I guess it behaved the same either under WinNT or Win2K... the video quality was simply outstanding, but the stability (to my humble opinion) was shamely poor.

[EDIT] ...summarizing, I guess it is a clear case where if you hold a bit of patience, you'll be paid. But it works. You can capture, play to video, and if you're lucky enough, also print the real time desktop to video. If you can't find the right combination of PCI slot and config, some features will be disabled. [/EDIT]

Well, I'll be over here if anyone needs something else about Targa over Win2KPro! ;)
I can't say it enough times, the video quality from Targa is impressive. I never finished to understand why the heck they don't pushed the drivers and the software side a bit more. Also, never tried any of them, but I guess the latest 3xxx Series from Targa should be something amazing to work with, and the driver model should be something more recent too. But probably they will score some higher $$$ to.

Well, here we go:

CMS: Joomla.
Code Editors: BlueFish, gEdit, NEdit.
WYSIWYG Editors: KompoZer.

...my actual commercial website is built around Joomla... I'm happy with it? ...ehrrr... it solved a few problems just to create another bunch of problems. People visits the well integrated eShop (VirtueMart), and is majorly happy with the overall workflow from this site... not too mention the Flash crap...

...my previous commercial website was well built by using CSS/HTML and not so well integrated with a couple PHP based modules (OpenCart + Plug-Ins)... it worked nicely, was nice to mantain, and pretty easy to backup... but people never enjoyed the switch between the main website and the eShop... for some reason many people hated OpenCart.

So, what is best? I don't know... I guess I'm sitting in middle of some acceptable solution, but it is far from perfect. The thing I hate from Joomla is the way in which the menues are rendered (trees, levels, and all the rest) ...you can spend your whole life configuring menues, and you'll never get what you want as you could easily manage do very with CSS just copy/pasting some chunks of code! :)

...anyway I think Wordpress looks like one of the nicer platforms for web blogging. I thought to use it before to choose Joomla, but I ended with Joomla just because VirtueMart. The availability of some good shopping cart is a key factor when you want to implement a commercial site. The second key factor is a good multilingual support... and I think here is where Joomla is actually a bit behind from the rest... I'm using M17n because JoomFish has some kind of extortive tech support... but anyway M17n actually lacks many things to be considered an integral solution... :?

I would like to know if anyone here managed to get a good multilingual either for Joomla or Wordpress, including shopping cart, forums, and all the rest. It is not as if I were ready to migrate my site again, but is always interesting to know alternative solutions! ;)

Yeap, but I've guessed he would probably be using some kind of of-the-shelf 1-Wire-To-RS232 or I2C-To-RS232 bridge to adequate the signals levels, buffering, etc... but you're right: it can be done just by the T=R*C method altering one or both of the variables, reading the RS232 pins without any kind of extra interface... and using either capacitive, resistive, or pulse-generation sensors.

Well... years ago, one of my first cars actually dissapeared below my ass, when I got stuck on a well transited street at the north of my city, at the middle of some very strong rain, and literally, these poor Fiat 600 was covered up to the windows with water... the flood was so strong that carried up with her every thing you could imagine... my salvation was a few guys that crossed the street to help, and with some big efforts (the Fiat 600 is not too heavy, but the car was flooded!) we managed to up the little thing to a higher area.

And yup, this is not a joke... so, yes, if you are 19' old and you drive a little blueish Fiat 600 at the middle of the rain, be careful! :)

The day after that, me and a friend of mine dissasembled a few parts around the engine, the seats, the doors, etc... everything majorly filled with very dirty water.

This is not the exact model that I had, but it was pretty close to that:

Yes... and that in the best of cases... because it seems there is a lot of people that left behind educated guesses to just take prophecies as only guide. Of course: -Who am I to criticize them? But anyway, I can't share their apocalyptic enthusiasm; and mostly because I would not follow anyone without a proof of concept...

But, hey! ...I enjoy Class-B movies a lot, so... why not? ...there is no reason to not save some rations of beans, bullets, bandaids and bullion just in case the wind blows too much and the thin veneer of civilization finally peels away! ;)

Anyway... honestly, despite the fact that such a massive event would be a very impressive experience to watch (even if last one!), I have to accept that it would also take away the chance to see how we manage to squeeze the energy from our planet, our sun, our galaxy, how we manage to open worm holes, travel in time, visit extra-solar places, etc. ...now way, Sir: the game is not finished yet! :P

Hey there, Hamei!

hamei wrote: Here's what makes me think it's over : people seem to have lost their brains somewhere.

Not me, my friend. But maybe I was not too specific with the subject. I'm not asking if you think the global warming is for real, or if you think that there are some (very noticeables, indeed!) environmental changes around, or if human stupidity growns up every day... I already know all of these things are already happening!

My real question was/is: "-Do you really think that at some point at the middle of 2012, the planet will blow up as per act of magic, just because the hopies, the mayans, and lately, Nostradamus predicted it?

I answer for myself: -No, I don't think so! And not even for a second!

But if you are asking if I think the planet, the tectonic plates, the human kind, the fauna, the flora, and our atmosphere are all of them healthy... my answer is: -No, I don't think so! ...the planet is mostly screwed up!

On the latest vacations I've taken with family one of the rivers where I accustomed to swim it was completely dried... only dry stones to see there... is this normal? No way. I visit these lands since 1974 and it never happened before.

But the case is... I don't think that everything will end at middle of the stupid 2012. Maybe it will end on around 50, 500, 5000, or 50000 years... but on couple years? ...I don't think so!

hamei wrote: It's as if people couldn't recognize truth if it rose up out of the grunter and bit them in the ass. Yeah, I see the point... but I don't think the planet or the human kind will dissapear because operpopulation, overconsumption, overcapacity... or at least in less than a couple hundreed years... and for the case, we could also end conquered and squeezed by a bunch of aliens or anything else... it is another possibility too...

Predictable?: Probably! Avoidable?: I Doubt!
...you know ...all the real massive events ...call them tsunamis, earthquakes, or whatever you want, all of them are mostly unavoidable. The most powerful forces of nature are all of them colossals in magnitude... nothing to do against them.

Anyway, there are tons of many other things that are just mankind's resposability... all of them avoidable... and even there nothing is done to avoid them... so, why not? Maybe you're right and TEOTW is close... but not in 2012!

Frapazoid wrote: I think people can't imagine human civilization lasting because, other than constantly fantasizing about it for the entirety of human history, our written history isn't that long so we have absolutely no mental image of what a million year old civilization would even look like.

Indeed! ...and just that is a real challenge! Honestly, every time I try to imagine that, I imagine the human kind travelling the space. I don't think a single planet can support for such a sustained growth for a single specie for a lot of time... but well... who knows! :)
Exactly. It is just like the grace period that is offered with some loans... you can use the resources for two (or whatever) years before to start to make payments. That's what God offered with this planet. Now... how much will last this period of grace? Who knows!

Hey there, guys!
...too many posts to comment on each of them, despite the fact that I don't think my comments would be of any special importance, given the fact that this thread is geeting more interesting everyday, and I'm also more interested for read than write.

But the thing I would like to mention is: many years ago I had a nice book that commented about what the author considered to be a single and unavoidable fact. And these fact was: if the human kind wants to make it to the next evolutive level, it has to develop what he called "Consciousness Of Beehive" ...not in the figurative sense that the people commonly uses to refer to some kind of societies where a community is layouted similarly to a community of ants or bees, but more in a concrete and real sense of beehive. He stated that if we can't reach such thing, we'll not make it up to the next level.

I can't remember the name of the book or the author. I had these wild period where a couple different books crossed my night table each week. Anyway I've stored pretty well the info, but without too much metadata! :)

The thing is, I think there was something right with these concept... and at some point the world seemed to work towards such a direction, except that at some point everything was perverted... you know, the normal order on the world beehive resulted too altered... by far too much for any reasonable measure... the queen bees abused their power, the drones felt in drugs to make their lifes more supportables, and the intermediaries felt in extreme greed to fill their pockets!

So... are we the society of the future portrayed on the cover from "Cars, Ships, & Airplanes"? ...no way! ...we are the crappy society that you can watch in an episode of "The Office"... you know, everybody watchs his ass, etc...

We are not even there in the K-Scale... don't be fooled... this is a poor joke from what an advanced civilization would be. And I'm not beeing pessimist, but maybe a bit crude. Try to place our actual world into an episode of "Star Trek", and just try to imagine it, just try. We would be some kind of shame zoo, or something like that... you know, if our destiny is travel along the stars to find a Mother Earth's replacement, we are loosing precious time and resources with each TV, each car, each motorcycle, each reality-show, and each loosy unnecessary thing that is produced by means of resources that we would need to exploit to discover how to produce antimatter for cheap in good quantities, how to suspend human life for 5 years without brain damage, and all the rest...

I share the concepts with VP: I also think that there is another 10% pushing real hard in the right direction. The problem is that masses were probably never more stupid than today... to put it in perspective.

But still, I don't think we are facing the EOTW at 2012. Let's face it: we are a real plague for this planet. A plague worst than cockcroaches for this earth. And plagues are, for any means, anything but easy to kill.

Just my 6.626068 × 10-34 Cents! :)

ajerimez wrote: Totally naive question: if most matter is predominantly empty space, why don't objects pass through each other?

Quantum physics: at any given point of space/time there will be a random particle occupying it... since you could not predict the position for a single particle, is a lot less probably that you could predict the position for every single point from an enormous quantity of particles composing the matrix for any given object... and even less probably that you could process such a big amount of information to synchronize the position for each particle from the object A with each empty space from the object B...

All in all, if you were enough speedy (and clever!) you could do it! ;)

ajerimez wrote: why then can't electrons pass right through each other?

I like to think that there are a few universal facts impeding it. I can think of:

1) The sub-atomic particles are either close to or lightspeed accelerated. It should make a lot more difficult to observe an empty space at some given point of time. Since they are a giant quantity of particles, and they travel to the limit speed, it would be as if each orbit were solidly covered with an anular shaped body more than with a single ball travelling thru it.

2) Since at speeds close light speed mass is increased as soon you accelerate the particle another tiny bit, I like to think that since those sub-atomic particles are so much accelerated, they should be on rare (inflated?) state rendering more mass than the original for each particle.

3) If all the above fails, I think the sense of turn from each sub-atomic particle should have a lot to do with it. As you know the principles of electrostatic fields explain that equally polarized particles suffer repulsion and oppositely polarized particles suffer attraction. But I was never sure if the reason is the same than the dogmatically consignated one in the books of text. There is a lot more to it than what I could recall now, including Triboelectric Properties, and all the rest. Maybe it is just as easy as to think that particles with same angular momentum just keep appart one of each other... or maybe not! :)
So: -do you all guys really think that the 2012 will be the EOTW?

That was the initial topic, so, nothing wrong with recall it.

I for myself, I think a big "NO"... because I think this is all a commercial bullshit to get richer some media groups. That's all. And the rest... well, the rest is history. :)

Some people pointed out that I seem to be the kind of guy that says:

No way. Whoever said that is wrong. Sorry, but whoever pointed that is plainly wrong.

I'm more on the kind of guy that says:

"-We are all evil, excepting... nobody! ...and ...including me!"

Perhaps this could clear the things... you know! By no other means if it is not by such idea you could explain the actual state of things here in the earth. We have to accept it. There is no good people here... we are a plague for this planet, no matter if we put on the street a trash can with a big banner saying: "Only For Ni-Cd & Ni-Mh Cells" ...no way. We already screwed it, no time for hypocrisy or polite excuses.

So:

-We already screwed it?

-Yes Sir!

-Will the world end just for that?

-No way! I think even if we made big poop in it, it is a big stronger and harder than that!

I hope my point is clear now! :P
Peace on the earth!

P.S.: But if for some reason this polite guess from me is wrong, I'll just take first class seats. I would not loose myself the BIG SHOW for anything in the world! ;)
