I had a similar problem with an Indy I was rebuilding for a friend a while ago. The monitor would come on like there was a signal and just stay black, or go into suspend mode and then act like it had a signal and then go back to suspend. The problem turned out to be that the monitor just didn't support the combination of refresh and resolution, which is sad since the monitor was a brand new Sun one. After switching to an Ibm P202 it was fine. So it sounds like it just might be the monitor or the adapter.

The "technical hurdle" from what I read on the racer.nl site was just that his Irix development system was an O2 workstation and that it couldn't handle the graphics anymore, so unless he was/is given a better sgi system for development, he won't have an irix binary. Though you can still get the source and irix makefiles it seems. You need Mipspro C++ to compile it though.

I have a few systems, as follows:

Origin 200 4xR10k 180, 384MB ram, 6.5.19m
Octane R12k 360, MXI, 1gig ram, 6.5.19f
O2 R5k 200, 256MB ram, 6.5.19f
Indy R4k 200, XL24, 256MB ram, 6.5.17m
Indigo R4k 100, Elan, 384MB ram, no-OS (will have 5.3 at some point)

Athlon XP 2200+, 1gig ram, Winxp-pro
IBM T20 thinkpad, 750mhz, 512MB ram, Winxp-pro
IBM X20 thinkpad, 650mhz, 256MB ram, win2k adv svr.

I have a Sinclair ZX81 floating about somewhere too, which is broken unfortunatly.

That's really sweet! Don't suppose you'd consider selling one of them by any chance? :D

Hmmm...I wonder(hope) if the person with the SGI email address is considering helping us all out with this information in some way. Board fab info perchance, slim though it may be. I'd jump at the chance to give my R5k 200 O2 that kind of performance boost though.

I didn't think you could have an SSI and MXE installed at the same time. More because of heat than anything really. That and I've never heard of anyone with and SSI & MXE or something similar.

Yes, you can mix I and E series cards. I have a MXI and SE card in my octane at home.

From what I've seen and heard, the "special" card is just going to be a Quadro with dual dvi outputs. Something along what IBM did with it's ultra high-res 21" flat panel(it used 4 inputs from two matrox G450s).

Well, if you ever happen to drop by there again, don't suppose you could see if he's got any old 4D stuff....namely just a partial or complete(HA!) G or GT board set. Really at this point I think I'd rather have a G, so I can swap boards out to determine the board that causes the pinstripe of death and maybe figure out whats causing it. I've got to take some pictures of it sometime because it's not as clear cut a problem as you'd think.

Ummm...neither of my O200 towers or my 747watt Cherokee P/S make sizzling noises. The have a low hum from the transformers, but nothing that I would describe has a sizzling sound.

The I and E series are the same technology(Impact), the E series just use GE12's instead of GE11's. I think the raster managers are the same. I ran an MXI + SE fine for quite sometime until I put in a V6(which does involve re-installing select bits of the gfx systems). I would say to try and put the SI card into the other available slot and see if that makes any difference. If not...I've still got an SE card sitting around :)

I can pretty much say no on that one. Last time I checked, the IBM http server was for AIX, OS/400 & i5/OS, OS/390 and I believe windows. There may be older versions that have an IRIX code set, but I don't think so.

I'm almost 100% positive than you cannot use the usb ports for anything but a keyboard, mouse, the usb iMic, and I think there was a pair of usb speakers. But definatly not for an external CD/DVD at this point.
WolfLord - :4D70G: :Octane2:

"Two Minus Three Equals Negative Fun" - Troy McClure
No, I don't know for certain that USB keyboards/mice will work with the USB ports. Only one way to find out though...

It's running 4.0.5F and does so quite well. I was oh so lucky to manage to get the OS and compiler tapes with it when I bought it. The main hd was completely dead, the rest of the hardware is pretty much original. There's a hinv of it in the hinv section too.

Is there no video connector at all or possibly a video connector with just 3 mini bnc connectors(the w3 part of 13w3)?

Also, from the terminal, when it powers up it should go through all the motions and display the keyboard/scsi/speaker/mouse or whatever...after keyboard you should be able to hit F1/F2/1/2 on the keyboard to get into the firmware...1/2 are usually on the serial console, but which depends on the system. The maintance mode is rather a fast track to that.

I was looking to getting a decent size tape system for backups on my irix boxes. I was looking at maybe a scsi exabyte VXA-2E anyone have any success getting one of these working on irix 6.5.xx?

Any thoughts or experiences appreciated.

Cheers

Since I have pretty much any tape drive floating around at work...also where my Octane is, I went and checked it out for you. My octane is running 6.5.19F at the moment(I keep meaning to update it but keep not having time) and I can use the tape drive just fine. Scsi inquiry commands come back fine and mt works just fine as well. I ran a quick tar and that worked out fine too.

I've tried one before, under at least 6.5.19 they have issues. I'm going to do a new install on the system Wednesday probably so I can run another test with a newer version of Irix. Are you looking for mainly LTO-1?

yes, 1 and 2.

thanks in advance

Ok, I had a bad drive for the first go round it seems...on the second drive Irix sees it as a generic 'cartridge device'. I was able to do the scsi inquiry commands, mt status commands and read and write to a tape using tar. In this case both drive types LTO 1 and 2 were scsi attached. Still running 6.5.19.

You probably need to run fdisk and make sure the other disks are labled and partitioned right. Also does you E450 have the full drive backplane or just the base 4 drive one? All your disks should atleast show up in /dev/dsk as cXtXd0sX where cX = controller # X, tX = target # X, d0 = lun 0, and sX = slice # X. From there you still need to make a filesystem on them and mount them.

If you can connect via the serial port you can just install the needed Odyssey software packages and remove the "conflicting" impact ones. It's fairly straight forward.

I'd take it and run it along with my 4d/70G :) I assume the VGX didn't have the pinstripe of death issue like my poor G boardset suffers.

I'd be interested in a V10 pending a price....still would be a solid upgrade from my V6.

HIPPI board maybe? First spec for that was a 50 wire TP cable according to wikipedia....

I could use a 1.4 Xbow if you still have any kicking around.

"Two Minus Three Equals Negative Fun" - Troy McClure
I'm looking for a 1.4 Xbow to replace my current 1.3 so I can use a V12 graphics board I just picked up. I'm willing to either buy one outright or swap my 1.3 + $ for a 1.4

Thanks!
