is there no "autoexec.bat" type of file somewhere that would be able to run this simple command as a root-user at the end of the boot sequence?
hi lars! yes i know about this files coz i put some path variable setting there :) and for you, you just put the same line of command of what you put on the command prompt to mount the directory coz the script can contain raw unix commands? but i think for this kind of task you should heed what PS and vishnu advice to follow proper unix etiquette to avoid future mess :)

but just now, i saw a instruction how to change a new battery for this case, so maybe its ok then :)

I’m still looking for the AIX CDs, so laptop status is unknown. On the other hand, the battery takes full charge!!

hi vwarez, hows your laptop? wow! that battery really was taken care well :)

btw i got another seller here but its an 850 and he doesn't know how to operate it, he only knows when powered up it stucks on this screen:

is this still repairable? i don't have experience with AIX, but this screen, in what state is this? PROM/BIOS?

hi tingo, i see hmm maybe, coz i can see the hard drive from another picture
anyway i just give up and looking forward to that other seller maybe i can convince him to drop the price a lil bit.. 5000RMB still a bit painful :)

kjaer wrote: That is the power-on self-test screen. If you press one or the other of the F-keys (F2? F4? I always have to check) when that screen is on, you can get into the various self-test/configuration modes.

I forget what happens if no boot device is found, but it may very well just sit there at that screen forever when that happens. It could be a bad sign, or it could just be an unformatted drive. Check that there's one even installed, by lifting up the keyboard. It just snaps in place at the front, with a hinge at the back. The hard drive will be clearly visible underneath, at the left (battery on the right, removable media bay in the middle; memory cards underneath all of that).

If it's missing, you might have some difficulty finding a replacement, since it uses a 2.5" SCSI drive in a special carrier. But you could make it work with a "normal" SCSI drive connected to the port on the rear.

hi kjaer, thanks for the details but i think i wont buy it anymore, just waist if ever the hd is dead :( yes there was a drive inside, saw it from his other picture. but yeah, bad sign, i think no need to waist time and money right? and as what you said, its difficult to find a replacement, so no thanks, if really want to, ill just buy that working one with high price :) but neh.. just wait til he decide to drop the price :)

rjb wrote: I actually have one of these, though mine's currently offline until I get a CF card for it. Will be trying out installation with an Artmix PowerMonster adapter when I get it all back together. I've been running NT 4.0 PPC on it, it will install from the stock CDROM, but you need a 2 floppies, one to get the ARC loader for the platform installed and another to load the machine-specific HAL. The nice thing about NT is it has wider PCMCIA support. However, if I could ever get AIX 4.1 media, I would love to play with the video input on the 860 - all the documentation I have found implies it is only supported there. Linux is another possibility for it, though I have not tried that since the 2.2 kernel or so. I know platform support for PReP is getting rusty there.

If you don't have a floppy drive you can build a custom NT4 install CD that includes the ARC loader and HAL for it - I have instructions for making that somewhere.

hi rjb, wow! good to hear your's still running and even put something new :) i see, so video just works with AIX.. are those two In and Out right? thanks will keep that in mind ;) but first need to get one first :)

Don't even consider it, geo. If you buy something from Japan they say "It's junk and bad !" if it even has a tiny scratch. If you look at anything unusual (aka anything that's not a cheapo peecee) in China, it's been drop-kicked through the goal posts of life about three hundred times but they want a million five for it. And they won't bargain. They have no idea what it is and can't even turn it on but by god, they know it's worth san shi wan rmb.

They are idiots. They can keep their beloved crap forever. You will see gloriously overpriced trash that's been on taobao for years. Literally years. Things like a 195 mhz pimm for an Octane for $800 ...

thanks!! ok2 im already on it and will soon release it here ;) oh this is good news then hehe ok2 will back to work for a better app, got many suggestions from hamei hehe will do that too ;)

hi ham! ok2 hehe yes, when you press the button the button will disappear right? then it means the downloading was done and it was placed in /etc/gXipmsg/Downloads :) sorry about this coz i just want to show something fast, but my plan is to open a widget where you can choose the location where to save, this will be on the next release ;)

hamei wrote: Using the O2 binary, same thing. I can see the file name in the attachments button but can't do anything beyond pushing it.

hehe as said above, when click the button, it will disappear once dl is done, when larger file, it will show the bytes downloaded until its done ;)

hamei wrote: Messaging works predictably both ways now tho. It was a little flaky coming from the Windows side before.

hehe sorry about that, it was some bugs already fixed ;)

hamei wrote: Using the dropbox on the Irix 'send' window would be hot. Who cares about the Windows users, let them hunt through file listings

hehe thats also one thing im looking forward on the coming release, but im afraid it will only possible if the motif is the wm also, for bsd and linux which uses open motif, im not sure hmm but lets see, drag n drop will be really cool ;)

hamei wrote: Here's what the main window looks like when you put the grafix in /etc where it belongs ...

bingo!! you got it! hehe

of course!! hehe actually that was my first plan but if so, how can we move the app around the desktop? still can grab?

hamei wrote: One other thing What ports are you using ? In theory, if you open a hole in the firewall this would transmit across the internet as well ? ah for UDP i use 2425 for messages. for TCP i also use 2425 first then once connected then it will choose another port during file transfere. but im not sure about the hole? but about the idea nekochanners message each other, this was suggested by kuba but hi suggest to use something like virtual network where we can setup and meet each other? not sure if i got it right hehe or can i modify my app to support something like what you said without any need of a special server?
hahaha my God! 400usd for shoe? more expensive than my Air Jordans? geeez hehe

hamei wrote: Hmm. Easier to add a new one than delete the old one. This is what I had in mind .. Should work the same way but look like a minimized application ?

ok will try this soon ham, thanks for the suggestion, will try if still can grab the app, if not, is it ok i put the app always at the lower right? or movable is still better?

ok will sleep now and hear you all tomorrow :) really thanks for using and the suggestions, lets do this!!

Hi!

Maybe a stupid question. i got a AI file made from a Mac using AI CS5. My PC only have AI 10. Then i ask the maker to save it for AI 10 so that i can open it with no issues.

When opening, some warnings about fonts not found and the outcome is not as expected. He provided me the fonts from his Mac but is it possible to use it on my PC?

My question then is, what should i do on my PC to be able to open the AI created under a Mac with no warning and errors?
Also, anyone here using Eurostile Extended #2? is it possible to download a free OTF or TTF for this?

No, sorry. I do have some shots, of course. But neko wouldn't allow me to post them at all. After all, kids might read this forum as well...

how about email it to us? ;) sounds interesting

hi hamei! sorry i didnt notice you last post here..

hamei wrote: okay, a little more essperience here : the Irix side works fine. But on the Windows side, if I hit "reply" it quotes the text and sends the message. If the Assist hits reply and sends, the quoted text goes but the reply text does not. Strange, eh ? Assistants are strange and talented bug-finders.
hmm thats indeed strange.. what version did she install again? i use v3.41 but i didn't encounter such issue.. maybe we can report this bug to the maker ;) hahaha indeed!! how i wish we can use our assistant as regression testers hehehe

hamei wrote: I am not sure I should ask about this but on Windows, the app bongs a bell when a message is received. It's almost as annoying as the QQ knock noise Do we want this ?
yup! indeed annoying hehe but i can put this option if you want hehe actually we use this weapon to annoy someone.. we send empty messages just to ring the bell hehe

hamei wrote: Is there any way to add users manually ? If one were to try going through the router to the Outside World, for instance ?
hmm im not sure for windows version.. you mean someone form outside you add him on the list? i think we have such case here.. but it was not manually, it was through the broadcast thing..

hamei wrote: Seems to me I had intra-office messaging working before between Irix and Windows (forget how) but the ability to send files quickly and easily right to the desktop is nice. Thanks, geo.
hehe thanks too for trying this ;)

Now here it comes, latest version ;) The updates:
* Better implementation for send/recieve files (performance is also improved)
* Download folder is removed, you can specify where to save the recieved file
* Better desktop appearance thanks to hamei ;)

Binaries: Please replace the older in /etc/gXipmsg with these. Then remove Download folder too, thanks.

Next steps are:
* Drag and drop
* For IRIX build, make the UI as more IRIX friendly as much as possible
* Make a neko tar for IRIX only
* Send/receive folder

If only the people who develop the IPMsg for iOS and Android add the file transfere feature.. imagine transfering pictures from your iPad to your UNIX system through wifi ;) cheers everyone!!

Hi everyone, i have a coming project that deal with fingerprint authentication and i was wondering maybe our SGI has experience with this task? Has anyone tried to do it under IRIX? If yes can you share me some info how to do it and any advantage over PC? I know PC these days will just eat this up but i was thinking because SGI is more about image processing, maybe i can utilize it for this project ;)

as far as my research, if speed is needed, i should go with match-on-device.. but DSP and SoC is a bit expensice i guess so i would try match-on-host, so i want to try if SGI is capable and can utilize the SGI's image processing power for this task. O2's ICE will be ideal right? but hmm i cannot imagine two sensors scanning at the same time..

morning guys! thanks for the inputs ;)

SGIs are general purpose computers, so they'd be capable
... but ...

the graphics hardware is definitely not a GPGPU. If I recall, ICE was able to be accessed by some software (cf the Photoshop accelerator), but I don't think SGI ever publicly released the docs on how to do this. Seems there is/was an effort to get some support in Linux ( http://www.linux-mips.org/~glaurung/ ), but I'm not sure where it is now.

On the other machines the graphics are pretty much one-way devices - shovel data in one way and get a display signal out the other. If you really work at it you might be able to get the Command Processor in InfiniteReality to do some stuff for you, but then you're just using a ARM slave processor, which isn't too special. I don't think the computer end can access the GEs directly in any of the big SGI graphics.

i see.. hehe thanks SAQ, actullay i already plan to do this on match-on-device or match-on-card.. is just try to ask maybe somehow i can utilize my O2 to show them my SGI still is usefull in this area if possible ;)

ShadeOfBlue wrote:
geo, if you're interested in ICE, disassemble the O2 OpenGL library, it contains functions for loading code into the ICE coprocessor and implementations for a few OpenGL functions using that.
The ICE coprocessor is also a MIPS core, but supports a few extra SIMD instructions. I'm not sure if the IRIX assembler can generate code for it, but the Linux project SAQ linked in his post has patches for the GNU assembler, so you can use that.

hi Shades! actually yeah, past months ago i was interested about ICE esp when reading from Ian's site.. digging around until i got some notes from the developer of Pegamento.. really interesting :) ok2 i will try again where i left.. as soon as i get my new HD from Ian, ill get back on this ;)

Another fun thing to check out would be some video I/O XIO cards for the Octane and Origin. The DIVO (I think) cards had two R4x00 processors on them for doing colorspace conversion and alpha compositing. If you can figure out how to load code onto them, it would be awesome
oh! i just have a PVO on my Octane, is this covered? by loading code, do you mean if we can access it through IRIX and let it process something? this is cool indeed!! but hmmm i think i only have PVO.. my next project in mind for my two SGI is to have decent video chat with todays PC :)

Image processing and image generation are not necessarily the same thing.

SGI made some of the graphics HW available for image processing tasks (i.e. read back processed data from the graphics pipeline) via the Image Vision library (I believe that's the name). I have seen it bundled with some of the SGI mips development packs.

But I assume this is one of those mental masturbation exercises, as there seems to be no point to this project, honestly. It is a dead platform, it is very outdated, and frankly you can get better performance/support for image processing tasks with some of the newer OpenCL/Cuda hw/sw stacks you can have now a days for peanuts. Life is short, waste your time wisely.
hi r10k! i see.. hahaha yes2 its a mme or something :) as ive mentioned, my main game plan is either match-on-device or match-on-card.. currently i got 1 chip solution from OKI, another is using TI DSP, then worst case is SoC.. but for match-on-card, any MCU with decent speed is enough.. hehe ok2 heed your advice on life.. time is gold indeed :)

hi shades!

ShadeOfBlue wrote:
If those notes include any info on how to write code for the ICE, I'd be interested in them too

hehe ok here it is, but i think you alraedy read this before, its just some tips on how to code so that it will be forced to be processed by the ICE instead on the CPU :)

I wanted to play around with ICE, but never found the time to finish disassembling the OpenGL libraries and that Photoshop plugin. It's such a shame that SGI made this interesting chip, but released no documentation on how to use it
ah i see hehe if ever you get back into this and find something, can you also please let me know? how about we both dissect this insect and share notes? would be fun! hehe

ShadeOfBlue wrote:
The PVO probably doesn't have those CPUs ... On the DIVO, they are located next to the compression connector, one is on the left side, the other on the right. I tried to find a good top-down image of the DIVO, but there's nothing on google images.
oh!! hehe so i guess i need to pass on this one, its ok shades no need to goggle image, ill just stick my nose with ICE for a while, so whats the game plan doc? :)

ShadeOfBlue wrote:
Yes. I think the current drivers load the colorspace conversion code on demand, but I don't have the DIVO card to check that. It should be possible to run any signal processing code there. Those CPUs have a small amout of SDRAM as well (a few MB, IIRC).
hmm sounds deep and interesting.. ok so both of these undocumented chips are mostly for image processing right hmm if once we uncover how to use them, whats the next game plan?

EDIT: Yay, this is my 666th post
waaah but here in my location, this number is good for them ;) esp the nomber eight!! hehe
