hi,

does someone successfuly run flightgear 0.99 on Indy ? i have r5 with 160Mb of ram, 8 bit gr. everything installed and load`s fine - i get the loading screen with aeroplane in an window and the logo, then after "loading subsystems" step and more minutes waiting the window simply disappear and the memory clears from fgfs ...

in paralel i watched the mem usage in "gmemusage" and goes to the maximum (~160 000 K) then from hdd usage seems that after some point the system goes in hard swap ...

should i try with 256M ram, or i need some "bigger machine" ?
sorry ppl i install this and get the "Add to backgrounds" option on right click, then i choosed one jpg image, when i go to Desktop > Customize > Background - i don`t see it in list... i restarted, i have irix 6.5.22m ? sorry i`m stupid

Ya i haved the same situation, when installed i lost all my icons then when restarted the icons are back, i login as root too and this one not works for me :(

So...

all u described works ok

- i have the "Add to backgrounds option" on the menu when rightclicked an image file
- i checked the .backgrounds file u described and the pic IS added to the end of the file -> here i posted the file (html format) http://www.emedia.hr/sgi/.backgrounds.html the two last records are added tru your menu option

but here the story ends i NOT have the added pictures in the LIST when going to "Desktop > Customize > Background" ...
can`t track the gap :( (is maybe because i have 8 bit gr. ? or is not important)

Thnx

Indy is good only for non-textured games like Battalion and the SGI flight simulator demo

anybody knows is the SGI flight simulator demo downloadable from somewhere ? url or something ? i googled the web and not found anything about it. it maybe comes with Irix installation ? (i still not have cd`s)

Well... i own a small Indy, but this thing load in 2 secs and less ! shure ! Even on an Indy i can manage smaller objects and meshes with np and quite fast ! ... who optimised this thing done it like a pro ! regards ! off course rendering part on an Indy is not a song, but shure ppl with Octanes and on will get max. from this baby :) ...

Today i imported some dxf`s and played a little ... maybe will post some examples here if i will have time ... i never used blender before ... but this one rocks !!!

The problem with importing files, and missing file names is fixed, the libiconv problem is fixed too, but i get an warning window which say that i must adjust the path to $phython home, but i not know where to set it up ...

I`m using standard ftpd from IRIX dist, altrough the active ftp seems working fine, the passive one blocs the traffic all the time.

here the piece of ipf.conf for ftp, the passive block is wrong:

Code: Select all

# active FTP
pass in quick proto tcp from any port > 1023 to 'my_server_ip_addr' port = 21 flags S  keep state
pass out quick proto tcp from any port = 20 to any port > 1023 flags S keep state

# passive FTP
pass in quick proto tcp from any to 'my_server_ip_addr' port 15000 >< 20000 flags S keep state
pass out proto tcp all keep state
How many of you still uses this kind of software for effects on Irix ? and what are the differences ? I know both software apps require big bang octane2`s or tezro`s but i get a try to shake 3.5 on Indigo2 impact and for "minimal" things is quite usable, at least for user interface exploration and command hierarchy learning ... etc ... maybe for first steps too... in fact i was surprised how usable is this thing on 10 year old machine, ok this is classic constatation so i will skip this one ... i even maked some simple effects in few minutes that surprised me.

I know today shake is primary apple-platform thing for powered pro-mac`s, but wondering how wide was the usage on Irix platform when it was available ... in the other hand the v3.5 seems not so distant from 4.1 (or 4.2 dunno) that is apple current version, i mean the version distance is short in relation to hardware/generation that run`s it ... for example Maya 6.5 (last Irix v.) and Maya 2008 that is straight 3 versions ahead 7,8 and 2008 ...

Piranha still retain Irix support at least for v4., and i think is on the higher range of pro-usage and definitely needs nice powered Octane2 to run smoothly ...
Maya (and Shake) on Irix have one big fall, it`s not possible to directly render the animated scene to some standard movie format like quick time, avi or something ...
what are standard procedures to convert image sequences for example sequence#.iff (0001,0002,0003,4,5 ...) to video ? or is better do this on another platform than irix ?
the tool fscheck can play the seqences, but can export be made ?

i was tempted to overclock, but humm, i see here and there 175 modules for ~10$ that can be easily overclocked to 200, but on the end ... 195 or 200 is not much diff right ... you got that right on that german article ... it`s strange the author talks about usual 175-> 200 overclock of I2 module, but in the english header majix site talks about octane cpu at 200 Mhz ? ... then again is much diff 195 I2 or 200 Octane cpu ?

... i readed on some news groups (google ?) that time ago on eBay appeared an real 250 Mhz I2 R10 impact - that was confirmed, not R4400 at 250 but real R10 at 250, who, how and when is not known ... the seller only gived the hinv that showed R10 cpu working at 250  that was it, and this can be one improvement worth future exploration ...

... too bad I2 not have same CPU slots as the Octane does, then overclock will be probably more easy ... i even thinked if is near possible to put one dual 175 or 195 Octane module into I2  ? probably not ... yes ? who knows ... maybe ... that will be one REAL improvement ...

cheers

Congrats!!

- but what you done ? you put O2 200 cpu into I2 module ? right ?
- i see you are cooling your SI - :) is that hot ? i wanted to do this with my MXI but there`s no room for any fan ...

cheers
Image

Image Image Image
... yes ... thinked several times of some system to add extra cooling the Max Impact cardset, but there is not room for one finger when you have for example some other card in the 4th slot ... the best thing would be put the fan on the left side spot of the boardsets ... specialy because the TRAM`s modules .. you know ...

anyone some idea here ?

Scary to see all the mainstream people considering Macintosh these days.
that`s in fact good, mac (os) is a nice platform, i readed that current industrial mainstream in hollywood is a mac runing linux, so where once SGI dominated, today is mac ... from my personal experience using win/pcee platform to do production quality jobs in time-dead-lines environments when your life is in danger though because of serious contracts - itself is a SCARY thing ... things just die when they just can`t, and you never know if the job will be finished in proper maner ... simple dumb everyday example: we had 4 hours to finish some big promotional pre-print about 2 x 2m in 300 dpi resolution (as i remember) full color, it had about 1.5 G when loaded in photoshop, on a high-decent-blowish-pc things go wrong form the start, we spent 3 hours of loading, re-loading, crashing, re-saving, etc ... with even one step of image manipulation ... then when things go serious, we switched to plain intel2 iMac with 2G ram all finished in 30 min., other 30 min we drinked cofee and joked ... this is reality ...

...well something like SGI solutions in production environments is definetly missing, in the other hand mac is a decent replacement, at least for now... and huh vista is a childplay for childs ...
R13 unix... any experiences ? i MUST do some simple modelling IN AutoCad by contract, though it would be fun done it on Irix/indigo2 ... i found some article explaining AutoCad 14 under SoftWindows if it even runs ...

cheers
It sucks the same as all the other versions.
humm ... i don`t think so, because it`s an industrial cad standard indeed ...
I don't think "AutoCAD" and "modelling" belong in the same sentence
? constructing wired 3D architectural objects from plain views, before exporting them to some powerful animation / rendering tool it`s a quite standard task for acad ...
humm, i will take this discussion with lot of precautions, is not i`m defending maya, but ... the main question iz for what you need the app, what you are trying to do with it in what time, how complex is the task, etc ... either i`m not defending autodesk and their policy with customers, maybe some things are needed to be fixed, but the maya itself is an institution. maybe the tomorrow is shining for blender, and maybe become the defacto standard, until then maya IS and will be the production standard. and yes the learning curve is very hard cause of its complexity and features... and for the end, at this stage both apps CAN`T be compared, you can do things in maya you can`t with blender, i`m not an maya guru, and maybe currently using only 1% of its features but that`s for shure.
... well, once i get near to not receive my payed items ... filling the PayPal claim helped and maybe helps in most of cases, especially when dealing with lazzzy sellers ... eBay is forcing PayPal because they are under the $ame hood and are protecting their a$ez ... but like any other politics this one sucks alota because is missing proper background for protecting modest buyers from cases like urs...

p.s. what u are doing with $400 of athlonXP`s ? :) :)
Image

this is a very nice piece of hw :) ... may i note ... the whole thing in constructional elements is VERY alike to the indigo2`s :)
note the vertical riser card (is this EISA?) and it have exactly 4 slots, the down-copper line with audio conns, the psu position, the position of drive sleeds ...
maybe sgi then just taken the design origins from it ?

good luck with the sale! ///

sry for resurecting this old post, but does someone get this working ? I get the same error on Indy linke mnorton, are this perl dependencies ? or some environment variables that must be set ? There is an new version of Inkscape ou there but i doubt is compiled on irix..

Hi, the trick with the symbolic link worked :) the app starts to load, the main app window appears, but at some point it crashez. I dunno is this because of Indy [256Mb] or something ... i will try later on Indigo2 here is the result:

indy# ./inkscape
** Message: Beginning icon prerendering
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
what(): St9bad_alloc

Emergency save activated!
Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now.
If you can reproduce this crash, please file a bug at http://www.inkscape.org
with a detailed description of the steps leading to the crash, so we can fix it.

***MEMORY-ERROR***: inkscape[3156]: GSlice: failed to allocate 248 bytes (alignm
ent: 256): Not enough space

indy#

well, not enough mem on Indy, but Indigo2 ran it ok :) seems a nice tool for fine vector drawings, it`s not illustrator but what a hell it`s worth a try - iz free ... quite slicky on Indigo2, Octanez and up should fly ...

One more thing: related to this Inkscape wiki index: http://wiki.inkscape.org//ReleaseNotes045 the version 045 can also be built on Irix, quote: "Thanks to patches submitted by users of our community, Inkscape can now be built on SGI IRIX 6.5.28, gcc 3.4.0 systems and on Tru64 systems."

Hmm Octane 2 + PCI card cage + Voodoo 3 PCI...
Interesting, get an tip from Ian that on some point nVidia maked IRIX beta drivers for their current PCI gfx back then, dunno was for TNT or something ? and that was for the Octane indeed ... what a guess - sgi denied the public availability of those - well that`s strange for them no ? ;) who knows where they are now ... in some dusty, dark corner ...
If you need more info on what to do, read this.
those dallas chips are a real pain in the az ... i recently saw the clock reseting on my Indigo2 and this is first sign of a dying one ... they should last for at least 10 years ?

from the linked hack - i`m wondering what is the repercussion of leaving the old - empty - battery inside and soldering contacts together with the new one. depending of what electrocemichal process happened inside the old battery and what is the actual internal resistance of it, you can find yourself shortcutting the battery u re attaching outside or u can short the life of the new one significally ? dunno, should be checked out ...

there are brand new Dallas replacement parts/chips with newer serial numbers that are compatible with those used in sgi`s and aren`t so expensive ~$10 - $25

from wiki: "The original battery was made by Dallas Semiconductor, now a division of Maxim Integrated Products. The original unit was marked the "DS-1386-8K-150", however its replacement unit, the "DS-1386-8K-120" can be directly substituted with no ill effects."
sorry for my oversight, but from where do i download it ? i only found the DR2 release link.

Cheers 2 all. As of recently in the free time im working on a small software project called Irix Weather Station || iws. The name targets its purpose, and the audience will be from hobby / personal / home spectrum. The intention is to use low-end SGI machines like Indy / O2 for interfacing / measuring and collecting data from hobby / personal weather stations. The starting hardware comm. interface will be RS232. I hope there will be more users interested in (besides me :) ). 4 now i post here the very early pre-alpha build screen-shoot (that in future may change), and hope you will like it ... i will post new updates on the development progress on this thread.

Thank you all for your replys i really appreciate your feedbacks guys. In fact on the start, when the whole idea of this was born i was focused only on certain type of weather station (that i own) that is ws2300 series for home / hobby purpose and that is ideal for experimenting and in general to play with it, because is un-expensive and really affordable. But as the thing grow i took another approach -:> in fact only extended the focusing only on one type of possible station hardware can be used. So currently the project will go in this steps:

1. Finishing the UI that you can see on the preview screenshoot i posted. (this part is currently in development)
2. Making the abstracted interface layer for sensors. (preparing to start with)
3. Making the "nullStation" that will simulate "real" sensors, so anyone can test and run the station software for testing / experimenting.
4. Implementing any of possible "real hardware" of wide interest.

For step 4. i will obviously go with the mentioned hardware i own, but here, when the time commes i would also like to hear feedbacks from any other users that would like to go with some similar / own hardware, and even implement the support for certain device of interest. So the whole thing will be opened for collaboration and new, creative ideas.

Well i choosed RS232 because the station i own is using it. I know more or less any newer weather device is using USB, and usb support on sgi's is quite unknown to me. For now will be very hard to trickle with usb protocols etc. but one day, why not (see step 4.)

For the end, sorry to all i was maybe unclear. This software is not collecting data from the web, it needs external hardware to function, in the form that is often available to all home / hobby weather enthusiasts (aka. personal weather station)

Best regards.

You can try to DIY it yourself. The advantage of modding it yourself is that you can choose the color you want and furthermore will not be expensive (few bucks for led's and 2 resistors). Offcourse, if you have at least some basic knowlegde of hobby soldering of electronic parts, then if this is not the case, you can still ask someone you know to do it for you ... i think i spent 30 minutes to do it (and think i spent ~$5 in total), and is really simple ...

Follow this guide: http://www.k-huhn.com/octane_mod/ , although this guy used only 1 led, you can have 2 led's (with both ex-bulbs places used) and this is what i done, the light will be brighter, but offcourse then you must use 2 resistors though ... Take care to not cross/miss the +/- polarity and you're fine ... & like the guy explained i used 82 ohm resistors and 5mm white super-bright led's, i think the white led's catch the Octane2 design, but that's a personal choice ... I angled a bit the led's because their height is a bit too much for the light module itself, with done so there is enough space to fit everything inside the original module without any extra work ...

here some photos of the mod i done myself, note the plastic glue i used to insulate/stronger the resistors holding, and led wires, you can use the common plastic gluing guns, that are kinda cheapo to find in any store ...

Cheers
Sorry for my ignorance, i had some spare time and wanted to play a bit with glut, but i have some troubles getting things right. I got neko_glut3.7 and seems it installed ok. I also have mipspro c++ 7.4 installed fine. I copyed the source for the hello program to some dir of my choice and symbolic linked the needed GL dir, but seems is not enough. Im not an supacompile guru, so i'm wondering how to set the header paths and environment. I know that specifiying headers in quotes means that the header is residing in the same dir as the source, but when the header is inside < and > symbols it means that the compiler/linker will look for it in system wide predefined libraries ? paths. Eg: #include "mysource.h" and #include <GL/GLwMDrawA.h> ....

I had the exact same issue on exactly same machine, only my Octane2 is V6. Like SAQ says you are using too old installation tools. Cant't remember now but i think i failed with 6.5.15?, later i obtained 6.5.26 and 6.5.30 and that was a go with no problems.

Hi, i think some I2 vfo's were present on Ian's site, and maybe they still are ... possibly you don't need an "widescreen", for I2 impact graphics family i think the max. resolution is 1600 x 1200 (max impact) and that's native resolution for better 20'' 4:3 LCD screens, possibly several generations old already. I'm saying this because making an custom vfo without right display parameters and right calculations can be really frustrating :) ...

I think at the time i was researching there was invenor-like Coin 3D. And if memmory serves right they had sources to compile on irix(unix ?) but don't take my word. Also as wikipedia says inventor was shifted to VSG, and possibly they did open sourced it in some later phase? If you need advanced scene graphs the osg project certainly had irix versions compiled because they started the whole thing on irix (there is actually a neko package of it for some older revision). For some project of mine i'm currently struggling with linux version, possibly there is nothing more powerful being open-sourced at the same time, hope it remains that way.
