I think the consensus is yes then!!... I think all you have to look out for is the Sync On Green capability of the display. Most of the entry level cheap displays don't support it, but any half decent one should.. I use Viewsonic VP series displays no problem, or LG L2000C which is the same as the SGI monitor just without the premium badge....

You could also check to see if its the 1.5V VRM that is the problem by moving it from module 1 to module 2. It's the smaller VRM located in the white socket on the board P/N 060-0127-00x. If you swap from the different modules and the problem moves to the other module that would be a good starting point.

Regards the L1 controller message, it's because you have updated IRIX on the system from the original shipped with it, but not a big deal, there should be some extra features in later versions, but what they are I can't tell. There is a command to flash the l1 from within IRIX, but this is done at your own risk and normal rules apply such as not powering off :

Code: Select all

cd /usr/cpu/firmware/sysco

/usr/sbin/flashsc --sc ./l1.bin all

That would update all L1's in the system. You can just use r.s where r = rack and s = slot for individual L1's. ie. :

Code: Select all

cd /usr/cpu/firmware/sysco

/usr/sbin/flashsc --sc ./l1.bin 1.1
&

Code: Select all

/usr/sbin/flashsc --sc ./l1.bin 1.3

I have had 1 problem using this method where going from very early L1 (1.10.2)version to very new version (1.54.0) I had a problem with a "UNKNOWN BRICK TYPE" message on the L1 and the brick could not be reset to brick type C. Unfortunately that problem is still outstanding...... :(

I think also, if it's causing you a real pain by it shutting down frequently you could probably turn the environmental settings off on the L1 (env off I think). But this is not a good long term solution as you obviously have a problem with the system that needs fixing.

Good luck with your troubleshooting anyhow.

The frustrating thing was also that some of the very early bricks shipped with this Security feature disabled, but this was automatically enabled if you updated the firmware on the L1 (which most people did when firmware updates were released by SGI ie with IRIX updates), only to find they had nobbled the machine unexpectedly.

If there is anyone out there with old versions of L1's that are still running the PROM version that was current in IRIX 6.5.13 say (l1 revision less than 1.3 something I think), I know some people that would pay very good money for them :)

But have you ever actually got graphics working? Because as well as the physical issues you mention regarding screws, & difference in XIO carrier, the midplane and power board in a X-brick do not support the power required for Vpro boards (24-Vdc) - the X-brick only supports 2.5-Vdc, 3.3-Vdc and 5.0-Vdc.

Now if you have found a way to make them work I would sure love to know about it, as I have all the parts required to make a nice box with V12 graphics in it!

OK fair enough. There's nothing in any SGI documentation I have that shows the X-brick as a working option for the O300. As has been commented elsewhere, the expansion bricks for O300's were limited to :

Router (AKA NUMAlink module) for connecting multiple O300 class modules together)
PCI expansion (AKA PCI expansion module, NOT P-Brick which is for O3000 series)
Storage (TP900 8-bay SCSI brick)

Although I believe Dr Dave has also added a G-brick to the list too......

And that's it. I think. ;)

That rocks, good luck with pairing them up and with the hunt for graphics. You should be able to get a G-brick from an Onyx 3000 attached to it for graphics, or a V-brick if you can find one. It would be good to see how the CPU's perform on some of the benchmarks here. I just did Ian's Blender http://www.futuretech.blinkenlights.nl/blender.html benchmark on 8 CPU 500Mhz Origin 3200 (With V-brick) and got it to 61 seconds. I reckon that you might be able to shave a few seconds off that with the additional cache you have (But fewer CPU's). But then again, you've not got graphics yet, so we'll see......

Good luck though!

You're right. The Fuel V12 also doesn't just "work" in Origin 3xxx or 350 - even with an XIO brick. You need a special (and unbelievably rare) InfinitePerformace V-Brick to use it with these systems.

So basically the Fuel V12 is for Fuel, and not much else.

This statement isn't quite accurate - there is the Onyx 350 InfinitePerformance system that has a V12 card installed in it. This is a standard O350 chassis, nothing super special about it.

The V-bricks were really for O3000 series systems, originally intended as a cheap alternative to a G-brick they are in very very short supply now, meaning they cost far more than a G-brick.

Back to the V12 card though, I'm not sure if the Fuel V12 the original poster has will just fit the O350 chassis and turn it into a IP system - there is a O350 IP on Ebay.de at the moment and the board number for the V12 is 030-1909-003 which doesnt show up in any Fuel HINV's out in the wild, so i'm guessing it is unique.

The V12's in the V-brick I have are a different number again though.

I'm almost tempted to buy one now to see if it will go in a O350 Onyx I have, currently running an IR4 brick.... might be worth a go as I barely turn it on these days, G-bricks do like to suck up the power!

OK I'll open up my O350. It has a DM3 board installed in one of the units where the V12 is shown in the system above, but the 2nd module has a 2nd fan unit installed which should be removable. I'll take some photo's too as it would be interesting to see the backplane connection, I would have assumed there would be something different for the fan unit, but I've never looked that close.

In my system (which I have now got some photos of) the DM3 board has it's own cooling fan attached underneath, which is the same I guess as the one used in the graphics option.

Hi All,

I have been searching the forum before flashing the L1 on a new IO8 board as I know of some issues that others have incurred, but I could not find either a definitive answer or a source for the recommended file. So, I thought having a new post on the subject might help future upgraders as well.

I have an Origin 300 system which uses an L1 controller (located on the IO8 board). It is currently using firmware version 1.18.1. I wanted to bring up to date, to match the other systems it will be connected too - they are using L1 firmware version 1.44.0 (Found in IRIX 6.5.30). According to another previous post http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13363 if running a version prior to 1.22.6 (Although I think this might be 1.22.2 having extracted the images) you should flash to this version first, then flash to the later version afterwards.

I've gone through the IRIX CD's to hand to make this reference page.

You'll find the images located within the "Standalone System Controller Environment" on your overlay CD

Code: Select all

IRIX Release Version               l1.bin version                 Overlay CD #
6.5.15                                  1.10.?
6.5.16                                  1.12.3                           4
6.5.18                                  1.16.0                           4
6.5.19                                  NOT PRESENT
6.5.21                                  1.22.2                           4
6.5.22                                  1.24.8                           3
6.5.23                                  1.26.5                           3
6.5.25                                  1.30.6                           3
6.5.26                                  1.32.6                           3
6.5.28                                  1.38.4                           3
6.5.30                                  1.44.0                           3

Update :
I did find this slightly confusing in practice. It turns out that the flashsc (System Controller Flash Utility) also has changes in it's life. I found eventually that the flashsc version 1.07 that came with 6.5.21 was good enough to use to flash any of the L1 PROM images from 1.22.2 until 1.32.6, but it was not suitable to flash the 1.38.4 or 1.44.0. You would get the following message :

Code: Select all

IRIS 5# flashsc --sc /usr/cpu/firmware/sysco/l1.bin.1.38.4 1.1
flashsc: (System Controller Flash Utility) - Version 1.0.7
ERROR: image file /usr/cpu/firmware/sysco/l1.bin.1.38.4 (image 4) does not appear to be a valid
L1 or L2 System Controller firmware image (starting address 0x00000000)

Likewise, if you try using the latest flashsc utility version 1.4.1 found in IRIX 6.5.30 to flash an older version of firmware (certainly prior to 1.26.5) it would just print the first 2 lines of output and then stop - I had to CTRL+C to get back to a prompt. So you need to downgrade the flashsc utility to an older version, perform updates to mid life versions, then upgrade the flashsc utility in order to flash the l1 to version 1.44.0.

So now I have a 6.5.21 disk on the shelf with copies of all the l1.bin images I've extraced apart from 1.38.4 and 1.44.0 which I use - initially flashing the l1 not in use to 1.22.2, then once restarted the system using the newly flashed 1.22.2 image, i bring the other flash image upto 1.32.6. I then shut the machine down, swap the 6.5.21 build with a 6.5.30 build and bring the machine up again, flashing the 1.22.2 image upto 1.44 I'll try .0.

I'm guessing I could probably skip the 1.32.6 update, and just run the 1.44.0 update from the machine when booting from the 1.22.0 image? I'll try that next time....

Oh well, good learning excercise anyhow.

Hi all,

I'm contemplating buying a Mac Mini server with Snow Leopard to run as an email server plus other stuff but am interested in a good working reliable backup solution for it. I'm conscious of the single point of failure being the hardware and like to have plenty of good reliable backups, but looking into various blogs / forums, there appears to be an issue using Time Machine for server systems, as in it doesn't backup important stuff :(

What's everyone's opinions of backups on Mac servers - should I be looking at retrospect or similar? Ideally, I want to be able to have a full restore image done nightly, which is rotated, with nightly, weekly and monthly backup points done. As it's mainly email services I want protected, the data size isn't massive, in total no more than about 10Gb, so disk space isn't an issue. I understand I can mirror the disks in the mail server so will do that anyhow, but offsite backups are important, so want something either as a DVD / Blu-Ray disk (slower backup but non mechanical media), or USB / firewire hard drive. Assuming the worst, if I had a new server with blank drives I could just plug in and get up and running with the minimum of fuss.

I'm thinking I might have to set up cron (or the recent replacement who's name has escaped me) jobs to shutdown some of the running services on the machine, prior to backup, and restart them afterwards to avoid any nasty surprises (backing up open files isn't good), but is this easily done? The Mac filesystem appears not to like being backed up onto another filesystem either, so I'm guessing I need to have dedicated removable media for this machine, rather than trying to backup to another.

New to mac hardware / software so looking for some starting points. Familiar with UNIX admin but am going to look at some good manuals for SL and training if I have to.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi All,

32 CPU Origin 3400, 600Mhz CPU's, 32GB RAM (ALL 1GB DIMM's, so fairly valuable). 2 rack system with all the CPU's and Routers in one rack, and a 2nd rack with the I-brick installed in it and some air gaps ;) I can probably add a G-Brick if you want graphics as I have a spare. L2 controller etc included with front panel display.

All 600Mhz CPU's so more desirable than the 400's that seem to be readily available....

Can deliver in person in the UK and help you set it up if required.

DOA warranty only on this, it will cost more to replace any parts from another dealer than it's worth as a whole.

Offers based on whole value. At the moment, 32 1GB DIMMS are worth £800 in my opinion, I-brick £500.00 and the 4 x 600Mhz C-Bricks at least £200 each (8 of those). That makes offers in the region of £2900.00 or so and for that you get the routers, racks, power bays, L2, a G-brick if required.

If no interest at this price, I will consider breaking the machine up, but that would be a shame. I could take it down to a single rack configuration with fewer CPU's etc if you have limited space.
Thanks,
tjsgifan

In addition to a 32 CPU 600Mhz Origin 3400 already listed here but not getting any interest (OK, I know the price was too much for you guys, but offers invited for it, or part of it), I also have a Origin 3900 system available to me. It's a 32 CPU, R16k 700Mhz machine. That includes 2 x Cx bricks and 1 x Ix Brick. In a full height rack with L2 and power bay. This is a very nice little system as it contains all the CPU's, RAM and router hardware within the Cx bricks - 16 x 700Mhz CPU's in each of them :) 4U height. :)

At the moment though, price is based on the Quad 700Mhz CPU boards in them being the same as Tezro and Origin 350, valued at £600.00 each. 8 x £600.00 = £4800.00. That would also include the Ix Brick and 32GB RAM and some other odds and sods.

Serious enquiries invited.

Not so serious enquiries also invited - anyone want to rent it? Could do some good number crunch work for you for any upcoming projects.....

Thanks!

Hello all, I've stripped out a SGI rack today which was full of rackmount Altix 350 chassis which were all missing power supplys.

So is anyone interested in any of the following :

sgi rack rail kits - fit origin 300 / 350 altix 350 type chassis

1.6ghz Itanium CPU's (4Mb cache)
1GB DIMMs for Altix 350 (PC2700 ECC Registered)
2GB DIMMs for Altix 350 (PC2700 ECC Registered) - You can fit upto 12 of these per Altix 350 chassis - so 24GB if you needed!
IO10 Controller cards (This might make an interesting upgrade for someone with an Origin 350 - I think this would work, but not sure - a SATA backplane and IO10 instead of the standard SCSI would mean you could put a couple of high capacity SATA drives into an Origin system)
Cooling fans and blower assemblys

Also lots of the L1 display, plastic bezels in as new condition available - basically anything other than PSU's from an Altix 350.

Any interest, just PM me. Happy to post worldwide.

Thanks,

Well to add my 2 cents worth.... a Fuel V12 slots into Tezro no questions asked, but a Tezro V12 does not slot into Fuel, requires minor modification to stop the bottom hitting the chassis.

If someone wants some late revision V10 Fuel graphics cards to experiment with for the greater good, please PM me. I would like a V12 in return ;)

I know this is an old post, but to save anyone else making the same mistakes..... from being too keen to update firmware I thought I should post this. SGI did test this sort of situation out before releasing updates and I think somewhere there is a release note that says don't jump straight from IRIX 6.5.11 or similar to 6.5.30 for a number of reasons....

If you have an older series Fuel that gives you these "firmware too old" messages, simply do a flashsc update to a mid life version such as 1.22.0 found in IRIX 6.5.21, followed by another update to 1.44.0 found in 6.5.30.

This avoids the problems mentioned above and would stop people incorrectly bad mouthing SGI's tech guy's.

I have plenty of Fuel systems that run 030-1707-003 motherboards, originally running very old f/w successfully running 1.44.0, it just needs some patience and 5 minutes of your time to check the procedure before running it.

Hope this helps anyhow.

You might want to double check that - Ktown2 is the interface board found in the O3x00 series G-bricks and is part number 030-1593-001, not Onyx2 G-brick (Graphics Module) which is the standard Ktown board part number 030-1067-001.

I appreciate they are similar in a lot of ways (I have both here!) but it all depends on what host your wanting to plug into your G-brick...

I do have spares here though of either, so if you PM me with what you need I'll check in the morning and come back to you.

But if you buy the ST336753LC http://discountechnology.com/Seagate-ST336753LC-SCSI-Hard-Drive version it will work straight away. And from that supplier it's lot cheaper.

And availability of parts... and running costs.....

IR graphics is easy to get up and running and the hardware typical of a lot of SGI older generation stuff is pretty reliable. But it sucks up a lot of power whilst operating and it's not cutting edge - simple things like the standard DG5-2 board's have a 13w3 analogue connection - where as newer Vpro IP stuff is all DVI.

But then unless you go down the route of V12 cards from Fuel's hacked into the O350 chassis, genuine SGI kit for IP graphics is fairly hard to come by where as there is an abundance of Onyx 3000 type machines around.

I have various IR graphics and IP graphics systems here but no compositors I'm afraid. I could very easily run benchmark of V12 versus IR2 / IR3 or IR4 though if it helps you. I have an Onyx 3000 config that I can attach either IR or IP graphics to easily enough, so the CPU / RAM / Disks would be identical.

You got anything that's strictly PCI by off chance?

From the Wildcat series only a Sun XVR-1200 card, buy I have 2 of the PsiTech RAD4 PCI cards that go in O2, O200 and O2000 and somewhere a 3DLABS Oxygen VX1-1600SW card.

I guess some others too, but to narrow it down a bit - What do you need, for what machine and what OS?

Learning something new every day :)

What's the use of this? I guess this disables the on board graphics (since e.g. IMPACT + VPro Octanes aren't supported either).

For the O2, it's a low cost alternative to the SGI Dual Display option. I guess the only reason for using it over and above the Dual Display option now would be if you want to run a 1600sw flat panel adapter and a 2nd screen via this PCI option.

For the O200 it's cheap and simple graphics - you had to use Gigachannel expansion to use an XIO graphics card (Was this officially supported in the O200 ??). Plug in the PCI Ethernet keyboard and mouse card with it and away you go.

Oh and for O2000, I suspect price was key. Back in 2001, SGI's list price for the Origin 2000 Visualization Console kit was £13,000 GBP, although it did include the BaseI/OG option, keyboard, mouse, polk audio speakers, microphone, 13w3 monitor cable and a monitor......... it was £3000 for the SI card alone and I think these RAD4 cards were about £800.

Don't expect IR4 performance though :)

Hi all,

Want to clear some space and have a lot of SGI DM2 / DM3 type kit from Discreet Smoke / Flame machines surplus to requirements.

Anyone currently looking for any of the following at a good price :

DM3 board for Tezro
DM2 board for Onyx 3000 and Octane2
VBOB
GVO board for VBOB
Cables for the above (Due to numbers available, preference given to people who buy a VBOB / card to go with )
QLA2342 boards (will work just fine in other systems too)
Dual port Serial cards

And also have a load of Discreet firmware FC drives of various capacity's, 36Gb, 73Gb and 146Gb capacity.

Offers invited.

If you check the other post and decide you need a new CPU, I think I have both 500mhz and 600Mhz spares and am in the UK. Note, that if you were running something faster such as 700 or 800Mhz, it is not wise to downgrade to a lower CPU in these systems without configuring the machine for a change so I would recommend you only replace your existing CPU with something of the same speed or faster.

If you need any other assistance, just ask.

Hi All,

Does anyone out there know of a modern LCD display that will support a 40Hz input refresh rate? The 24" CRT's from SGI attached to my Onyx2 have no problem at all, but they are starting to fade after a lot of years use. I've tried just a couple of the available LCD's I have and none of them have accepted the signal, they always show out of range.

Thanks.

The line drawings around are not specific enough to stand out in shelves full of power supplies.

Anyone able to provide a picture of one removed from the system or better than me finding one on Google ?

Sorry :( I have a feeling I bought all those power supplys from the seller - I didn't want the Altix systems as I have loads already, just wanted the PSU's for upgrade purposes and shipping 8 PSU's was far cheaper than 8 Altix systems.

You don't tell the L1 anything, you have to program the PROM prior to powering the system down. Easiest method is using the flash -f option within IRIX or it can be done within POD mode, but that's more risky for the inexperienced user. Have a look at the man page for flash and it should help you.

If you don't find one and aren't locked into the 40Hz refresh rate for other reasons (an Onyx2 era projector?), I'd be glad to offer assistance with a custom VFO.

Correct sir, projector at 40Hz and the CRT has the same image mirrored to it, CRT doesn't grumble, TFT's don't like it. Currently looking at some broadcast spec monitors as they seem to have a much wider range.

If space isn't an issue, this Prism chassis is nice and it's got space for the PDU's the O3000 uses, so you could actually squeeze more C-bricks into the rack than you can in the normal Origin series. But it's big :)

I have 40+ DTP63692B 2GB DIMMs for sale if anyone wants to make me an offer.

And 70+ 512Mb DIMMs part number M312L6423EGO too.

All removed from a working Altix 350

I also have a load of 1.6Ghz 6Mb cache Itanium CPU's if you want :) and the power boards if needed.

Might have some others in some chassis I've not looked at for a while.... think we have a complete rack of 350's still in storage, not been switched on for a year and have been robbed of PSU's...

In case anyone in the USA is still looking for a V12 for there Fuel, there is a low cost system :

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SGI-Silicon-Gra ... 485e4b9986

which has a V12 in it (Although description is missing, the part number 030-1726-003 relates to a V12 card).

500Mhz / 2Gb RAM and older revision PSU so expect some funny noises, but looks like a runner.

PS. No it's not mine, just thought the info would be useful.
