Could you use the l1 command to have the system boot when power is applied?

Such a shame your outside of the UK, as I have a couple of very interesting SGI racks here in good condition but I just don't have the time or the energy to ship one overseas - they are several hundred kilos (Thanks to SGI's over engineering..) once packed up properly.

The ones I have are custom branded versions of this :



It's an Ice system.

Oh and yes, water cooling system in the rear doors.... (Although the one most of you guys would want as it has racks for non SGI kit installed, does not have the water cooling, it's got a nice vented rear door and weighs 70kg less. )

Big and heavy though, you'd need a tail lift van and they are taking up a lot of space so won't be here for that long.

Now I feel really bad, I assumed you knew the console connection commands... and had 2 displays connected to the machine, as it was configured with dual outputs.

Let me hunt through the pile of 600 or so SGI software CD's I have around the place and see what I can find for you....

Does anyone know of any for sale at the moment? I'm looking for a few if I can find them, R5k, any spec. Willing to travel for a collection or arrange collection courier if you can pack them well.

UK / Europe preferred, but will consider anywhere else if there is a good deal to be had.

Can also trade for any other bit of SGI kit you might like - have some good machines sitting here doing nothing.

Does anyone here know of anyone who might be interested in buying there own SGI Altix ICE supercomputer to run a SUSE Linux build on? Potentially overpowered for most people, but someone who wants to play with the big boys and has a large budget to do so might have a use

Think 500+ cores, 1TB+ RAM, Infiniband etc.

I have a offer to buy it to break for parts and I really hate to do that but unfortunately business is business and I can't give it away or afford to store it just to look at once in a while....

When the red light flashed you should also get a more descriptive error scroll across the l1 display, is there nothing else showing at all?

Sometimes I've had the cable that go's from the L1 controller to the IO8 board come loose and you get the illumination but not the right signals, you could try reseating that cable and the whole IO8 board if you haven't done so already. I've often plugged those in and found they haven't been 100% seated at power on and you get some odd results...

L2 controller dies make life easier for a number of tasks if you cannot run the L3 software, there are some with ac power in ebay I think.

There is a joke about red buses - never one when you want one, and then two come along at once.

Same with Altix ICE systems.

I had 2 more offered to me after buying one and I didn't want to let them pass.

Given a bit of effort I could reconfigure a smaller machine to give whatever cpu power you want, minimum I guess would be one IRU which holds 16 "nodes" each with 2 CPUs with quad core Xeons. So 128 cores. Infiniband interconnect.

Where are you based? I'm in the UK and have both but international shipping might be an issues if your not in europe...
