The collected works of opcode - Page 1

I posted earlier in a different thread. I thought I would breath life back into this one.

I installed via scripts and everything seems to work just great except I have no indigo magic desktop.

Are there any special config changes I need to make to get the indigo magic like desktop working? I tried searching for answers but can't really find anything.

I logged into IRC but no one is in the #maxx channel, is this project still under development?

Just down in the dumps and thought I would post. I miss the magic. I remember seeing an Indigo for the first time in the early 90s and then some Onyx/Challenge/Crimson systems. It was such an inspiring product line of software/hardware. I loved the exotic hardware and the case designs. Because those moments had such a strong impact on me at the time, I started on a path that has led me to build a very nice career as a Unix admin/engineer. I still use my fuel, o2, and octane on a daily basis at work. Although now I can really only use them for ssh machines to admin other systems, I still love them. I hope I can continue to use them for a long time.

I was never a really big Sun fan but have always supported them. Their older stuff was cool and they were great machines but just didn't have the polish and usability that IRIX has. Looking at CDE in Solaris makes me a bit sick to my stomach, whereas IRIX still looks good even though it is so old. The Oracle buyout has been a total pain in the ass. It took 4 months for them to ship a simple 2U system. Their support portal is the worst. One comment on the front page of their portal summed it up perfectly "This support site gives feces a bad name!". OpenSolaris is dead.... Oh well...

DEC is gone, HP-UX and AIX from IBM are so boring, I would rather use Win2k8 Server....

I won't touch on OSX server. That should be a post by itself. It could have taken over the entire Unix server/workstation market but Apple Computer dropped the computer from their name and are officially a consumer device company. I can't fault them for their choices, they are swimming in cash. I still use OSX as my main system on a daily basis and it is the best thing out there.

xBSD. Loved them, used to use Free and Net as daily machines back in the day... Sysinstall sucks. It was ok in 1998, but come on....NetBSD has a great installer. Simple, to the point. I even had my mom using FreeBSD on her laptop (window maker as her wm) in the early 2000s.

It seems like the only thing left is Linux....

Go ahead and flame me but Linux sucks in the enterprise. I do give thanks to all of the hard work and contributions so many have made to developing free software. Why does RedHat put games in an enterprise server os? I like to play with Linux but hate supporting it. I stopped using it as a desktop because it is just too much of a pain in the ass. SuSE and Ubuntu are no better.

I just miss the magic. I miss salivating over marketing material from SGI. I miss Dreaming of having a fridge sized Onyx next to my desk and a couple of brand new 21" Sony granite monitors with that logo "Silicon <cube> Graphics" at the bottom. Xsgi and 4Dwm were great, I didn't think X sucked using IRIX back in the day. I watched code rush again and it put me in this mood. SGI systems all over the place, Netscape as the browser, the internet blowing up. I miss that time period.

I have a dual socket quad core xeon/skull trail system with two video cards, 16GB of ram, chocked full of 1TB hdds, 2 24" flat panel displays in an ugly expensive (although cheaply made) and it is running windows 7. How boring is that? Will computers ever inspire me like they did when SGI was king? Will computers every be fun again?

Recently got a prism in a crate of sgi goodies.

What would be the best way of getting a prism propack? I have a desk side with a blank drive. I have sles itanium disks but haven't had a valid support contract for years...

I got the older gentoo disks to boot and give me a console off of the graphics card but then I ran into sas issues with the kernel modules. At least with a propack I could have a usable system. This feels almost as bad as figuring out back in the day that the vw320 wouldn't run Linux!

Any info would be most helpful.

Please share any prism stories if you've got them.

Hey guys,

I never really got down and dirty with all of the settings/memory calculations for the graphics stuff. I have a v12 card/dcd that I have connected to two Dell 2407wfp monitors. Can the v12 do 24bit color on two 1920x1200 monitors? Any help from you guys would be great. thanks in advance!

Nevermind. I thought logging in and out would cause X to pick up the changes. I finally rebooted the system and it picked up the changes and is showing 24bit.

thanks Canavan. I will keep those in mind when building out my next box. I am trying to get 5 systems up and running again after years of cold storage with fresh installs.

I bought mine last year for 500 bucks. Skins are in great condition. Specs were low. I think entry graphics and two 300ish MHz node boards? I can't remember. I have a power cable and plugged it into my wall 110v wall outlet in the basement. I booted it up and it worked, I just haven't played with it because I am afraid of power needs off that 110v outlet. I read through the forum about people using them hooked up to 110v outlets. Who is doing that now? Could anyone with one running off a 110v outlet throw out some info? Is it safe? Will it pop the breaker or melt the cable? I am just a worrier, that is why they call me whiskers :) Do you really need a 120v outlet installed on a 30amp breaker?

I would love to run it instead of my octane 2 during the winter since it gets cold down here. I would think it would be cheaper to run than a space heater, I am only using it for ssh and not much else.

Why on earth Rackable didn't immediately change back to the cube and old font is beyond me. The SGI logo is utter crap, has always been utter crap, and will always be utter crap. It's like having a Ferarri in the garage that you never touch and drive a gremlin. What is new with the new logo? It looks like they embossed the "syfy" logo.

This has given me an urge to finally play with the Onyx2 I got a couple of years ago. Time flies working 3 jobs but now things have slowed down a bit. I ran it for a few hours with one node board. I was just paranoid about power. I am already running a Macpro 3,1 with 4 monitors, a skulltrail PC maxed out (The only game I play is D3) so I don't think the 1k PSU is pulling that much power, 3 dell optiplex 980 sff (vmware esx cluster), 2 dell optiplex 990 mt, and a dell 745 nfs server.

Anyone have a guess at what power the Onyx2 would draw if I am just using terminal windows and not doing any serious graphics work? It has two 400mhz node boards with 2GB of ram if I remember correctly. I need to pull everything and check.

I am hoping that a retro web bug hits and people go back to building pages that look like the late 90s without a bunch of junk code.

So I am home alone today with nothing to do. I was upstairs reading Introducing the UNIX Sytem by Henry McGilton and Rachel Morgan and waiting for my new ebay Indy to arrive. The phone rings and I don't recognize the number so I answer it. It is a gentleman with an Indian sounding accent and he tells me that my computer has problems and is reporting errors to their web server. I think, oh this is going to be fun....

I switch to a noob idiot kind of voice and start answering his questions. I chum the line so he smells blood in the water. "Oh no, how can we get this fixed?" He asks me to go to my computer and then asks me to locate the ctrl key at the bottom left of my keyboard. He then asks what is the key to the right. I respond "da A L T key" (spelling out the letters). We go round and round for a minute and he starts to get agitated and thinking that I am an idiot and can't see the Window$ key. I then tell him "It is an older granite keyboard, I don't have a Windows key.". He then asks what kind of computer I have. I respond with "It is a Silicon Graphics Indy". I can hear him telling someone in the background and it seems like they are looking it up on the internet. He then tells me that he is transferring me to the senior technician. There wasn't any technology with the phone, the other guy just started talking to me. He said, "That is a nice computer you have!". I say "thanks!". He then asks me what I see on the screen. I say "I see my Indigo Magic Desktop, the ToolChest, the Dumpster, home directory, Photoshop, and Buttonfly icons.". This really confuses him. He asks me if I have a Windows laptop, I reply "No, I don't like Windows very much.". He asks what internet connection that I use. "I got one computer that is using an Integrated Services Digital Network line, OC3 on the WAN interface of my router and I also running a token ring and FDDI network with my six other computers.". He asks what other computers I have. "Onyx2, Indigo, Indigo2, Tezro, Octane, and an old azz O2." He then asks if I can go to Google and type in team viewer or something like that. I imagine that is some sort of remote control software. He has me click the download button and then asks me to double click it. My response " I am going to have to download that in SoftWindows, I won't be able to open a .exe file directly... It won't run on my RISC MIPS R5000...Probably cause it ain't got no branch prediction.". He then asks what operating system I am using. "IRIX 6.5.22m with Nekoware!", I enthusiastically reply! He then said that he would have their IRIX specialist give me a call back in about 30 minutes.

I have to hand it to them, they really did give it the old college try. I was kinda surprised that they didn't figure out I was messing with them. If they ever call back, I promise I will record it!

interesting, I wonder if the presenter card would work being plugged into the Indigo's GIO32 bus. I always thought that it needed to be connected to the Indy video card.

So sad. I have several HPC clusters and I have never heard anyone bring up the letters SGI in any meeting in the last 10 years. I had a dream a couple of months ago where I was installing Onyx XL racks in the data center and was so excited. I didn't want to go to work when I woke up and realized it was just a dream. There just isn't anything exciting about a rack full of Dells....(or Linux). I couldn't imagine how much I would love my job if I had a DC full of Silicon Graphics hardware and was able to use techpubs for support.

Back on topic, I got that same email and thought, "I will never need to log into that site again anyway, I already have 6.5.22".

The thing for me about HPC is that it just isn't fun or exciting anymore. Great, I rack commodity crap and add another linux node.... I remember the excitement of when finally getting the PO signed off and then waiting for the big iron to be delivered. Unwrapping and boxing a beautiful non-intel work of art on pallets. I miss having to worry about getting spinters. I swear those moments were better than Christmas morning as a kid.

P.S. Each year, I just despise linux more and more. The most excitement I have had in the last few months was upgrading the Tezro to quad 700s. About 10 years ago, I thought the future would be OSX Server on Xserve nodes. Managing those with Apple Remote Desktop and ssh.... My how boring IT is these days....

P.S. M$ would have to be smoking crack if they think I would ever put MSSQL Server on Linux in my environment (not even thinking about the underhanded BS they pulled putting nails in SGI's coffin). I wonder if the boxed copy comes with a complimentary gimp mask and strap-on in a death of Supermanesqe black baggie.

I always hated the fact that SGI didn't have some sort of PC priced system. They could have tweaked the Indy and had sold something low spec. I don't want to discuss revenue, etc....That was my fantasy. I just wished they had something for people that didn't a job at a company/university with access to them. The jobs I had back then were tough to sell on choosing SGI over SUN. Everyone that had a SUN pizza box would come over to my desk and drool over my Indy and Indigo1 in the mid to late 90s. I never did anything other than use them as glorified ssh/Xterms on my desk (and still to this day, that is why I am still able to use IRIX daily).

HAHAHAHAHAHAA that is insane... Kinda cool, but insane. I have around 6 Model M keyboards from the 80s in mint condition. Are those worth 2k? Those are my 2nd favorite keyboard. They seem to work okay with SGI gear. My first favorite keyboard is the granite Onyx1/Indigo keyboard. This dude in NC kept putting them on ebay for 60 bucks a few years ago. I would just instantly buy them when I would get the alert. That keyboard just feels sooooo good. I was really hurt when I found out that I couldn't use that indigo to ps/2 converter in reverse to allow me to use that keyboard on PCs.

I think so too. I would have bought one for sure. I remember running Win2k prof on that box. It looked great on my desk. Why did they go with the whole ARCS prom cobalt custom graphics on a custom mobo? It would have been cool if they had put in some kind of bios compatibility mode.

What is the current stable release of the MaXX Desktop?
Before it looked like there was a paid version for SGI customers, is this still the case?
Is there an Indigo magic desktop with the fm?
Where do we download stable and the betas you are currently working on?

thanks!
