MaXX Desktop Modern Look and Feel Preview - Page 1

Hello all :)

Here's a preview of what I am working on. The new SGI Motif 2.3.4 modern look and feel start to take shape (used in the Keyboard Preferences app). Also experimenting with border thickness and anti-aliasing fonts which are all user-settable, btw ;)

Got to run... Would love constructive feedbacks

Man, that's way too clean and pleasant to be allowed on a modern operating system. Where's the transparent glossy 3D animated wobbling widgets!?

(Serious constructive feedback: the rounded borders on the icons and window switcher don't gel at all with the rest of it. I know that look is the default on most modern WMs for some damn reason, but as long as you're doing this, may as well make everything aesthetically consistent.)

excellent point about the round icons and app switcher... I did it cause (like you said) it's the norm. I made another 'flat' look & feel for icons based on the original sgi look. will be posting it soon

I do like it. It would be cool if there was a granite theme. The motif window borders and the gray backgrounds. I always thought the bluesteel enlightenment theme from back in the day would look cool with a light gray granite theme. Will this new version cost money? Are there any customers left from the corporate world that want this window manager/DT env? I have to bring up a Linux system this weekend and install this.

exactly. either make a proper copy of the original or something completely different. if you wanna "modernize" it add another branch but keep the original original.
the icons also lack the title btw and the button colors of the settings windows are wrong.
good... good... Glad to hear all your comments :) keep them coming please! I will post the 'other' modern look & feel that respect the original one.

Also, MaXX will come in two flavor... Original and Modern.

Much better, although I'd also ditch the transparency. Doesn't fit with the rest of the aesthetic.

I will... :) Have to showcase my new ARGB Visual support for my SGI Motif 2.3.4 and 5Dwm v2 ;)

much better :-)

what's left are the wrong button and slider colors and the slider handles are too thin.
Oooh, that second version is much better. I don't mind the transparency, would be cool for the terminal/console windows, too, but I'd leave that as an option like the way KDE allows something like that to be checked on or off. I'm more a fan of the classic SGI look, the further you get away from that the closer you end up with something else (like KDE), which we already have. I agree that the first version isn't so hot, the rounded look would either have to be everywhere, on every window and icon, or not at all (and the icons would work better with titles on them). But that would work better as a "modern" fork, I think most people (me included) would prefer the "classic" look of the '90s.

don't worry about those... It's more me playing around with different variation of colors and thickness. 8-)

I think they both look good, but then I've never been noted for my aesthetic sensibilities...

Is that a hack of the MWM iconbox widget? After maxx stopped working on Slackware I went back to MWM from the 2.1.30 distribution, been using it ever since. A Luddite, I know...

Or provide a slider - about halfway between the sample and 0% transparent might be my setting.

Version 2 is great !
Not far away from my own IRIX-Desktop. I like the clean window-edges.

very cool... I don't see why 5Dwm shouldn't run on IRIX ;)

Now that would be an interesting one to try! :)
Systems in use:
:Indigo2IMP: - Nitrogen : R10000 195MHz CPU, 384MB RAM, SolidIMPACT Graphics, 36GB 15k HDD & 300GB 10k HDD, 100Mb/s NIC, New/quiet fans, IRIX 6.5.22

Other system in storage: :O2: R5000 200MHz, 224MB RAM, 72GB 15k HDD, PSU fan mod, IRIX 6.5.30
I have a few questions:

What is the current stable release of the MaXX Desktop?
Before it looked like there was a paid version for SGI customers, is this still the case?
Is there an Indigo magic desktop with the fm?
Where do we download stable and the betas you are currently working on?

thanks!

:)
