well well well !

Are you from the Gnome or KDE community ? Just kidding.... or am I ?

I am finalizing the legal process with SGI and should be ready to release sometimes in October... I know it's not what you want to hear, but I've work on this project for over 4 years now and I will NOT risk getting into legal problem because I forgot something !

end of discussion !

tillin9 you should try it out. The DR-1 doesn't use much and it is fun to have an authentic SGI look and feel on your desk!

Enjoy!

well well well!

MaXX is not dead! We, Genirix Systems, are just allocating our precious resources (time and $$$) to where it counts! And we believe we are not the only one doing so....

On a personal note. I am agree with you, that the current situation sucks, but there is nothing I can do about it. I am and have been funding this for over 9years! No SGI backup what so ever (as many of you may have thought).

On the brighter side, I am in the process of installing TRAC and a Discussion on maxxdesktop.com to reignite the fire. Also MaXX is doing well on the commercial side and thanks to that we can continue to slowly but without any doubt support the SGI community.

Just be patient and for those who have skills, participate...!

Hi guys!

Glad to hear that you enjoy DR3... yet this is just a preview! The installer is not really there yet, but we are worked very hard on making MaXX Desktop an easy drop-in replacement/complement to existing Desktops on Linux.

fm, iconcatalog, confiuration panels and admin-task are in the work...

MaXX will become with your help even better, faster, and easier to install...

The SGI Desktop is back!

@GeneratriX

As for the correspondence... I like the idea a lot, but MaXX really try to follow the IRIX SGI Desktop guidelines and best-practices. I am targeting first IRIX to Linux migrations (that is where my real value and business is).

Finally, I like the idea of offering some kind of KDE'ish menu generating tool based on the Linux installation underneath.

Feel free to log a request for feature on dev.maxxdesktop.com/trac/maxxdesktop

I would love to get more real hardcore IRIX guys on MaXX's site... See that as a logical continuation of IRIX legacy, but with a modern twist to it!

Take care!

Of course, that's what I've tried to express; but maybe I've not phrased well. I've tried to mean that I enjoy a lot the fact that you could not tell if you are logged into a MIPS/IRIX box or into MaXX Desktop... both virtually behave the same!

That is the idea... 8-)

Well, I've already registered myself a couple hours ago... I'll add my ticket once approved my account. Thanks in advance for your excellent work with MaXX!

Thanks for the feedbacks!

I have been playing with it for sometimes now and have to say that it makes me realize how BeOS has ahead in many areas.

Haiku is really nice and stable for Alpha! Microsoft and others should take note ;)

Hope this time people will take on this great OS!

hi guys! you comments and feedback are noted and DR4 will include more documentation on the customization of MaXX Desktop.

On another note... parts of DR4 will start to be available really soon. So don't give up !

ROX Filer is an alternative (not ideal). It suffers the GTK+ syndrome... way to many update and incompatibility between distribution.

I run DR4 with 2.9 and things are ok! Base on your amazing screenshot I can see that the icon theme is not set.. Go to ROX settings and set it to IRIX (if your installation of MaXX was done via the installer)

Finally, I do agree that we need a common place for 3D artists and New Media... Maybe MaXX can bridge that cap eventually.

Take care and visit us... things will get back to normal soon and lots of cool new stuff...

Regards,

Eric

Hi guys!

Will try to answer the best I can.... For most up to date information on the project please visit: maxxdesktop.com

The LANG is set at two location. A system wise in /opt/MaXX/etc/system.desktopenv and in your $HOME/.maxxdesktop/desktopenv The one in your $HOME is the one you should modify.

As for DR4, well I am slowly resuming the development... My business and the poor economy force me to make tough choices... I am considering offering MaXX Desktop with a subscription base to cover the cost and allow me to spend more time on the project.

Hope this helps and don't be shy to drop me a mail if you have questions.

Regards,

Eric Masson

Debian 7 just got released and MIPS support looks pretty good. On my i7 ia64 arch with an old Quadro1700 it really flies. So I was thinking to 'officialize' the porting of MaXX to MIPS/SGI. I will need some help of course for the testing and bootloader.

Anyone?

well, I see two options here.

1) I continue the way that the licensing was establish between SGI and me.
2) I get enough names in a web petition that allows me to reopen the question with SGI and we take over the evolution of SGI's code base on Linux.

I would prefer #2, but like I said so many times, I am not doing it alone.

nice, so you included what was in the libSgm directly?

not necessarily. Although it could be made available as a compiled library and under special license from SGI. Lemme check what they say...

Okay, I lied. Ran it on my main laptop (Dell Precision M4500, Fedora 21) with fairly good results:

that looks awesome! As per my agreement with SGI, MaXX can ONLY run on Linux intel . This is the main reason why I couldn't release the source for 5Dwm for example. But again, I am reopening the communication channel with them... will see :)

This would have been with Slackware 13 through 13.37, I have not tried it with 14.0 or 14.1. As I recall the problem was that motif windows would come up black on black, which obviously made it a bit tough to get any serious work done... ;)

it's a known issue and was very easy to resolve. If I recall correctly, it was due to the XResource manager not fetching properly the resources for 5Dwm and a bunch of invisible 'special' characters in the 5DWm resource file.

I tried to get freeBSD 10.1 fully functional on a reliable machine and I keep having issues... 20mins to boot due to a bug with SATA DVDs, clang replaces CC (sooo slow) and the list goes... Installing the Nvidia driver is hell... I really tried mate! Even the linux_base-c6 package's installation script is full of bugs.

Hey all,

Here's a first preview of MaXX Interactive Desktop DR3.5 (moving closer to DR4) running on Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon 64bit. It's a modest system as per the hinv output below. But with 5Dwm and XcompMaXX running it's fast, smooth and quite snappy :)

More to come and help needed too

:) That version of toolchest is linked with the newest version if Motif 2.3.1 that supports anti-aliased fonts. But I do agree...

hey! back from vacation :)

the desktop icons were part of an older version of Rox-Filer... The current version sadly crashes all the time at startup. It could be related to the absence of Gnome session data or something like that. To be honest it really bugs me, but I haven't had the time to debug and trace it to the root cause. It's on my todo list for fall. Having said that, that problem would justify to fast track the first version of the 'real' fm-maxx ;)

Unless someone else debugs it and fix it, you will have to wait. sorry!

dukzcry wrote: Hey Maxxi, welcome back!

I'm seeing that the old releases of MaXX Desktop had desktop icons feature: https://tehtable.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/fm.png Is it still supported by latest MaXX? If so, how to activate this feature?

Second, having a source code (an open source parts) accessible via web is nice: http://dev.maxxdesktop.co/trac/maxxdesktop/browser But could you please also make a repository backing it accessible to public and post an address to it? (like via 'url' directive in trac: http://trac.edgewall.org/wiki/TracRepos ... positories or just by posting repo url somewhere on the MaXX website)
An alternative option would be allowing to download whole repository (not just a single revision) as zip file, but I don't know whether trac added support for this.

Would be nice if you'd also update these open parts to match current MaXX version, but that's another story.

Thanks.

NOTED ;)

Would PC-BSD be any better? I have been meaning to trying some form of Unix on my desktop machine, I was all set to use Free-BSD but then I was reading about PC-BSD and how it is built off of Free-BSD but has some usability improvements, so now I'm trying to choose between the two. I was going to try getting Motif or CDE running on whichever I chose, have a "more Unix" experience than looking at the same Gnome or KDE desktops that Linux has, but if Maxx is on its way back then I might finally have a Linux that is visually acceptable and I won't have to worry about BSD so much (though I'll still try one along with probably CDE, just can't figure out which one).

I think it would be a great idea to create a repository/PPA for Maxx when it gets to the stable working stage, that would really streamline the installation process, especially if it's (at least initially) only going to be tested/confirmed for a few of the Linux distros. I apologize if I understood the release process incorrectly.

That's the plan :) I am in the process of compiling a list of functionality for the next MaXX releases and I want people to vote and agree. My goal is to start include people in that process and ultimately get c/c++/java coders on board. 8-)

Hey guys! I am not dead, just extremely busy. Just want to warn you that someone has stolen my content and registered 5dwm.org. that's not me! and the worst thing is that they don't mention SGI and my copyrights anywhere...

the real deal is at: maxxdesktop.co

I am preparing a new set of binaries for you all.
