The collected works of BetXen - Page 3

Sorry, I completely forgot to take pictures of mine. I've just checked right now and they are exactly the same model and revision as in the pictures from hamei (in my eight modules).

It may not help you so much, but here is my experience.

When I received my altixes 350, the RAM banks were only half populated. Since then I added as many modules as possible and then powered the machine on. It simply worked out without any error message. For instance you can see here the result in SuSe. All the RAM is recognized and working. I've never faced any instability or hang-out.

Are you sure that your specific RAM modules work properly and are not damaged ? If you would like more info/output from my machine to compare with yours, just tell me what you need. I'll travel a lot these next weeks, but may find 10 minutes to power it on...

Good luck.

Thanks for the valuable information. It may turn out to be useful in case I finally put my hands onto two more Numalink cables.
I'd like to connect all the modules together (at least once), but honestly I don't know if I will run the whole hungry beast (in terms of electrical power) very often. Actually I never checked the SAL versions of every module.

Wow, nice old piece of hardware.
It reminds me when I was installing Irix (3.0.2 if I remember correctly) on my very first Silicon Graphics (4D-70GT) with qic tapes... It was also my first experience with Unix: what an adventure !

Here is my new Indigo machine.

It was still running since it was bought more than 20 years ago. During a long time, it was the web, database and service server as well as desktop computer of the IT manager of the Physics Departement of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Latest services were removed this summer so that I could take it home... tadaaa !
It was only moved 2-3 times, and not powered off a lot more often, so it is in particularly good shape. Plastics are almost like new. Door is fully functional, with all hinges intact.

The Indigo is the very first Silicon Graphics I ever saw, in the mid-90's, when I visited the ECAL, Lausanne's Art School, more specifically the Infography department. I remember people were running TDI Explore on them. Unfortunately, mine is only equipped with the Entry graphic board. Who knows, I may upgrade it later, just for fun !

It is not connected to the network for the moment, so here is the basic hardware information and some pictures. I'll update with hinv and gfxinfo outputs later on.

Did you also see that the processor speed is 50MHz ? In the OS, hinv correctly reports 100MHz. Why ?

I dont really know, but I think it is still well renowned. At least it is still very active and you can very often hear news about it in the local radios.
The people I knew actually left a long time ago. It was mainly students and the previous IT manager. This guy helped me find Irix 3.0.2 QIC tapes when I was searching for media to reinstall the OS on my very first Silicon Graphics, a 4D/70GT.

I've just disassembled the box to give it a shower (only the plastics parts, don't worry). One screw to tight them all and in the shower to bring them ... and it's done ! So well built... and the plastics is much more robust than later models. Everything is still in perfect shape and working order after 20 years. Times have changed ! Things were built to last...

[Title edited, since I realised that is was a R4000, not R4400]

Hi fu.

No problem. Actually I didn't study there, but some kilometers away; some more scientific studies...
Yes, the machine is very clean now, inside and outside. I'll try to take better pictures in the next days, but will not be very often at home. Nothing is broken and once I removed the dust from the power supply it became very quiet. Only my R5k O2 does better.

On the OS side, it is for the moment running 6.5.22, but is very slow. I'll try 6.2 and maybe even a fresh install of 5.3 (I also still have the original harddisk, which is running fine besides the noise: 1 inch Conner disk 540Mo).

Hi

You can run a standalone machine (the one with the IO9 or IO10 card, which included Ethernet by the way), then power it off, connect as many as you want (up to 8 blades) via Numalink cables, then restart the system. As long as the SAL (similar to PROM or BIOS) versions are the same and some other details (serial numbers, etc.) the same system will power up, except that it will have more processors and memory. If you connect via ssh -X for instance, you'll find exactly the same system parameters, desktop, etc. This is actually how I "play" with mine: most of the time I power on only the Base Compute Module and sometimes connect the other ones.

You don't need special softwares... that's more or less right. Don't forget that those systems are built around Itanium processors (IA-64). Therefore you will not find so many soft for them. However, you can compile them from source.

Regarding the PCI video card, search the forum. This topic has already been discussed more than once.

You can also search for more information about the OS that could be installed. RHEL and SuSE were officially supported, and some people successfully installed others as well.

Hi J !

Thanks for this little piece of software that gives another interest to our old machines :D

I was thinking about another trick to make the reader's experience smoother in low-end machines. Would it be possible to add another file reading option, I mean that three pages could loaded in the memory: the current one, the previous and the next one ? In that case, transition to those surrounding pages would be faster when flipping pages, while keeping the memory requirement to a reasonable amount.

Yipeee... a Tezro in Switzerland !
For once, shipping costs (or travel costs to Züri) would not be that dissuasive. On the other hand, I'm not sure I'll use it more than you do and would then not spend too much. Of course I'd like to have one in my collection, but...

If you don't find anybody interested, let me know how much you'd like for it. Maybe I'll change my mind :D

Hi.

Since monts, I'm having issue with my fuel. I thought it was the power supply (NMB GM430WTXW01SSV rev B, manufactured 38th week of 2003) and modified an old PC ATX 2.2 one (Xilence XP420) according to this post . Unfortunately it didn't work better.
Today, I've installed the original power supply back into the chassis. When I connect with putty, I get the following:

Code: Select all

ALERT: Error reading the ODYSSEY temperature sensor, no acknowledge
ALERT: Error reading monitor ODYSSEY interrupt status 1: no acknowledge
ALERT: Error reading monitor ODYSSEY interrupt status 1: no acknowledge

I tried re-seating the V12, without success.

What to do ? Does anyone have an idea ?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. They were working and I disabled them when I first tested the ATX power supply, because no fan was connected. I should probably turn it on again, since I reinstalled the original one.

I had a look at the NMB PS internals yesterday. The fan only has two wires and no additional circuit board. The fan is directly connected to the lower PCB.

Thanks jj,

I still have the V10. I'll have a try.

Apparently all 5V and 3.3V voltages are OK. However 12V is very strange (~3.5V). Is it normal before power on ? Could it be a cause to the problem ? I guess the I2C is ont he 5 or 3.3V line, right ?

I feel so stupid !

With the V10, it just works... End :D

Actually:
- "env" gives the same values, including the strange 12V IO at 3.563V
- no more "NC ERROR (-404)" after "power", for all XIO voltages
- "pwr up" and... tadaaa !

That's so nice to see it running again. I'd almost lost hope.

Any idea what I could try to resurrect the V12 ?

I've had a look at some other env outputs. For instance, jj's Origin 350 reports the following.

Code: Select all

XIO 12V BIAS <not present>
XIO 5V <not present>
XIO 2.5V <not present>
XIO 3.3V AUX <not present>

Since O350 may accommodate a V10/12, does it mean the system knows when XIO additional board is present or not ? Then in my case, it feels something is in, but cannot get any answer from the I2C ?
Maybe I should try removing the graphic board and repeat the test to see whether I get the same "<not present>" message as jj.

Some years ago, I've bought a Cooler Master CM 690 II case. I'm still very happy with it.

Here is what I prefer:
  • Good ventilation, i.e. perforated front plate, equipped with foam filters to avoid too much dust inside
  • Left side is also perforated. A duct can be placed around the CPU fan to bring cold air from outside the case directly to the CPU.
  • Extra large fans --> very quiet
  • Very convenient sliding trays for 5"1/4 and 3"1/2 devices, with tool-free fixation
  • Power supply on the bottom

I'm not sure you'll still find some on sale, but there is a new version: http://www.coolermaster.com/case/mid-tower-cm690-series/cm693/

I've just tried to install it but am facing some issues.
  • libdca and libx264 couldn't be mapped, which has been solved by copying MPlayer-1.1.1/lib folder content to /usr/local/lib
  • libdvdnavmini.so.5 still remains and I can't find how to install it (even find the file somewhere to download it)

Did any of you also encountered this issue and found a way to solve it ?
Am I doing sth wrong ?

Done ! I was too stupid...
My local copy of nekoware/beta was not rsync'd properly. I've now installed the last libdts, libdvdcss, libdvdnav and libdvdread.
Everything is now working OK (more than 10 vids tested so far). Libs could also be removed from /usr/local/lib.

Thanks !

Altix 350 (2U) do fit perfectly in my Compaq 10622 and HP 10642 racks, as HP DL145 (1U) and 385 (2U) do, so I would assume the racks that were sold with Altix 350 series would accept all standard 19" equipment.

I'll be very much interested in knowing if it works... and may then give mine an upgrade ;-)

Have fun... and good luck for your trials !

@Geoman: That's right, Yves has a lot of machine coming directly from Cortaillod. There are even some photos somewhere of their trip over there. In particular he has some signed machines, e.g. the 5000th Indy R5K or sth like that, lots of octanes, Indigo2's and 4D series (including my former one) and even some Onyx2 racks.

I've just found some pictures I took a long time ago in his storage area... have a look !

Some of the machines are exposed in the entrance area of the IT department from time to time, but unfortunately most of them are in storage.

So tempting. The one still missing in my collection. For the first time I'm on the right side of the ocean, and even in the same state, Arlington, VA. Unfortunately I'll only stay two days and I don't think it will fit in my cabin luggage ;-)
Moreover, what will the security officer say when he'll scan it at the airport ?

Another time, maybe.

For some years now I maintain a list of all my machines and started giving them better names (sorry uunix) than PC1, PC2, etc...

My network equipment is named after ancient gods (charon ( ferryman of Hades ) for the router; janus for the AP).
My printers are famous painters: vangogh and monet.
The PS3 is supermario.
The PCs are greek letters... up to theta.
The Silicon Graphics are named after the periodic table. Names are not reused. I am currently at aluminum. Unfortunately I was not naming my machines since the beginning, so that my first 4D/70GT never had a name... :(

I've had similar problem a year ago and spent a lot of time modifying a standard ATX power supply to replace the presumed dead original NMB. Finally, I found out that the V12 was faulty. Replaced it by a V10 I had on stock and... tadaaa !

More information here .

Did you try to connect to the L1 ? What's the output of "power" command ?
