Hi.

I've finally discovered that there is a little shift to the left. When I make a window fullscreen, the left border is hidden. After inspection, the display area does not use the 12-13 rightmost pixels. Can you easily modify this or do you agree to share the vfs ? I will try on my fuel too (currently @1920x1200 on 24" CRT), but not for the moment. My living room is already full of things, mainly children toys (including mine

).

Concerning the EDID, I've seen in the options menu of my TV an EDID "paragraph". Have to look at this.

Yes, I have a set of the IR demos CDs. I would also like to find more modern demos or applications. Yesterday evening, I connected the Onyx2 to my home cinema and ran different things: demoscene demos (like dr.fungi etc.), mplayer full screen, DiePlaneten and QuakeIII (Wowww !). Still have to install and configure FlightGear etc.

Wow, what an impressive post. It's very interesting. I think I begin to understand now how and what to do.
I will try the new files this evening and maybe even try to optimize if needed. I will be on holidays from tomorrow since next sunday. I will give you news after that, because I will not be at home.

I've finally had time to test the "rb" and "right" vfs. They both work well, but there still is a need for 8 pixels shift that I will do when I return home. I'm not completely sure, but it seemed that the upper left corner was slightly blinking. Have to check later too.

And he says that the demo runs at 25-30fps, if I remember correctly, on this i7-26x0.

There is also a shorter video on their website where it is said that they have other optimized versions that run even faster (still without GPU).

Hi again !

Tried yesterday evening to modify the vfs to shift the display area 8 more pixels to the right. Unfortunately, you (recondas) removed the "*.vfs.txt" file in the meantime and I only had them at work ;-)

I downloaded then the file mentionned in this post and modified it.
The "shorten your format" message appeared and it took me half an hour to remember that you wrote something about that (if only I had read your post once more before !). Removing 2 from the VerticalBackPorch was the solution, as you suggested.

Everything works perfectly well now. So, I'll share with all of you the latest and working vfs/vfo files. I hope it would be usefull for someone. There are some instructions summary in the header of the vfs... because I'm sure I will have forgotten everything next time I would need it :-)

In switzerland, it is not mandatory to drive with daytime driving lights, but highly recommended. Campaigns made by the Federal Office of Accident Prevention (or something like that) go in this direction for 2-3 years. More and more people do it and I think it is really a plus to help seeing moving vehicle, even in the middle of the day.

I don't know about cars junk yards here. I think old cars are taken back by the garage that would sell your new one. In the law, as soon as you throw something in a junk yard it belongs the country. So, normally, one should not have the right to take anything out for himself. In reality, it is tolerated... you can even find working computers... but not so many sgis... snif !

hamei's right. It really is a nice machine, and this one has an IR3 pipe and a DG5-8... I'm already jealous ! I'd like to pick it up, but my wife would kill me. Mine is in the living room and his friends are spread all over the appartment !

One thing to know before: it's noisy, but who loves... don't care.

"hinv" lists the hardware inventory. You can see many examples in the "Sgi: hinv" sub-forum. In the Isla Nubar control room, there are Crimsons and Indigos, but none of them are multiprocessors machines, as opposite to the graphical output of the gr_osview application on your desktop.

If you have an Ikea nearby, you may even find SOLVINDEN... 8 CR2032 batteries for 1.99$ (or 2.5'0€, or 5.95CHF, that's not fair).
But be careful, you always come back with a lot of useless things

Regarding the battery holder, I think I used that one once because there are no metal parts on the bottom. The contacts can be bent on the sides.

A couple (20-25

) of years ago, I once planned to install more RAM in my first 286, that my father brought me from his office. I was so happy that I forgot a screw inside. Unfortunately it was silently laying on the motherboard, contact several pins. When I turned the power supply on (cas still opened...) I saw a nice flash and then... nothing !

Fortunately, the computer worked again, but I had to depress the reset button before turning it on, then wait for at least 3 seconds before relasing reset and... biip biip... let it start. At least it worked every 3-4 attempts.

It never happened to me once again... guess why ! I certainly learned from this mistake...

Hi crrn,

Good idea to reinstall the OS from scratch. However, you'll probably face problems with tftp on Linux. I don't know exactly how and why (others could probably answer), but it doesn't manage the protocol in the same way as Irix. *BSD does it. So, it would be much easier and straightforward to use deBug's DINA instead (which is based on freeBSD). Have a look on the wiki here .

Good point. I didn't notice that.
From my experience, DINA would be faster, simply by the fact that Indigo2 has a 10Mbps Ethernet connection. The Octane has a fast ethernet. The installation speed does not directly depends on that but also on processor speed and hard disk, but it's a way to speed up a little bit the process.

I also have the Dell U2410. It's a very good monitor: plenty of entries, factory calibration with certificate (checked with my color sensor: close to perfect), 16:10 factor (and not this awful 16:9), and so on.

I can only recommend it.

Thanks a lot for making it possible. FF3 works great on my Octane2 (running 6.5.30), but I still have problems on my fuel (also 6.5.30). It is probably due to bad library paths and so on. I could identify pendant references to libgdk_pixbuf (now "ldd .../firefox'bin" gives no error anymore) and tried to renew .rqsfiles as ShadOfBlue suggested... without success for the moment. I always have the std::bad_alloc issue.

On Windows, I often use Notepad++ . It is very convenient, fast and can highlight the syntax of many different languages.
I don't know which libraries are needed, but if somebody could compile it under Iris, I'd be very happy.

Thanks, that may be useful for me. I don't power on all my boxes very often. Due to changes in the network shares and so on, I normally have a lot of "NFS timeout" messages and have to boot in single mode to vi-edit fstab... Very annoying.

Do you know by chance if there is a way to specify the number of connections trials before ignoring a network mount during OS startup ?

Sorry, I asked before even trying to find it out by myself.
Now I did it and it seems it should be pretty easy... One or more of the following arguments will probably do the job just fine:

Code:

bg        If the first attempt fails, retry in the background.

retry=n   Set number of mount failure retries to n. (Default = 10000)

timeo=n   Set NFS timeout to n tenths of a second. (Default = 11)

soft      Return error if server doesn't respond.

Regarding the "soft" option, be carefull that

Unfortunately, I'm abroad for some days, but I think mines also have these pretty standard Delta power supplys. I can check when I'll return, if you still need the info.

By the way, if you found several modules and what to grab one, make sure you buy the "base compute module", which has an IO9 or IO10 daughter board (network, SCSI or SATA, etc.). You can even have more than one and still use them as a single system (then don't forget to take as much NUMAlink cable as you can). I was not not aware of this and am now still missing two of them, unfortunately. Don't make the same mistake.
