I have a question: why pkgsrc when there is blastwave.org?

My question is why learn multiple packaging systems, when there is one that I know, works well, and is available for multiple platforms?

Okay, fair enough.
If you are trying to compile with sun GCC, it's in /usr/ccs/bin. Make sure it's in your path.
Heh. AIXWindows. I have never seen a screenshot of that. One of the parents of CDE.
There is not hate on Linux going on. It's just that Irix works better and I can't think of single thing you can do in Linux you can't do with Irix (I mean, besides USB Mass storage support).
Gray Fox wrote: Why do people want to install Linux on SGI Systems for anyway? Same with Sun, Mac, HPPA, and etc. Why now save some money and hours by just building a PC and just install Linux on it. It looks the same on any other system.

Some people want to use Free Software, which Irix aint. You and I may not agree with putting it on a SGI but it's his choice.

No flame wars and now back on topic.
It's really good.

Small quibble: Venus rotates clockwise, unlike the rest of the planets. Your Venus has the wrong rotation.
This is getting off topic. You may want to take this to Everything Else.
Thats really awesome!
Same here.
This is my everyday desktop. Heck, I created a FVWM theme to match it because not all my computers can run MaXX.
Yes and no. Parts are open source, parts are not per Eric and per SGI.
I got email from them today telling me how awesome they are going to be. I wanted to say, "Prove your love. Send me a Tezro." :D
Could you post this on the wiki, if you haven't already?

You can download an updated version here : http://www.lollipop-design.com/download ... .71.tar.gz

That is just awesome. I use it on Irix and as the GTK theme for my Maxx Desktop install.

We have released a preview of MaXX Desktop DR3 for testing.

http://forum.maxxdesktop.com/comments.p ... ussionID=8

The install process is is even easier now. It's now simply a script which downloads and installs MaXX. No ldconfig, no making symlinks.

RHEL/CentOS x86, Debian/Ubuntu x86 are supported distribution. x86_64 support will shortly follow,

Feel free to post questions/comments here, on our forums http://forum.maxxdesktop.com/ or visit #maxx on freenode.

Cheers
Please test! We desperately need more testers, more people to help and lurk on the IRC channel.

If it ran on Solaris ....

Unfortunately, it won't, probably for a long time, if ever, because of the license restrictions from SGI. This is also the same reason why it won't be on FreeBSD, either.
You can make the Toolchest's font like Irix's by editing the Xdefaults in your home directory and commenting out anything that says xft. I believe its three lines...maybe four. Log out and in and there you go.

I'm not sure this is a bug or feature. I think it's a bug. Eric may think differently :D
Here is a screenshot of DR3, showing Nedit and Irssi running in a winterm. Yes, I'm alone in the #maxx channel. :(
You do never know. At least they're willing to license some of it.

By the way, if anyone want to test DR3 on something like Slackware, Gentoo, Arch and report back, feel free. More distributions could be supported but there is simply a lack of manpower to test.

DR3 should work on any RHEL clone, such as Oracle Unbreakable Linux and Scientific Linux, if any of you happen to use these.
I am for the subscription model myself. Anything to get faster updates.
Yes, but no CDE. I should try compiling OpenMotif that why I can drown my sorrows in MWM. And yes, I'm serious.
I hate to sound stupid, but how does one go about doing that?
OL is easy because there is an OWCompat Enviroment already.

How about Minitube?

Looks cool.
http://flavio.tordini.org/minitube
I am installing it now on my x86 box. I'll test this out.

I was totally unaware that it doesn't install a GUI. I guess that explains how the ISO can be so small ;)
And it works!
I've been out of the loop for while. What's the status of efforts to bring usb mass storage device to Irix (if any?).
Serial port would work for me.
I know about the Fuel and Firewire because I have one. Works pretty good.
However, everyone else in my world uses USB.
Actually, transferring pretty large files via email is possible. Just usb mass storage support would be several degress of awesome.
josehill wrote: A safe way to do it with minimal coordination effort might be through Kickstarter - someone proposes a fundraising project with a budget, people make pledges to the project via Amazon checkout, but no money changes hands unless the project is fully funded. If the project doesn't get fully funded, no one gets charged anything. I'd be willing to pony up some cash.

A musical acquaintance of mine used the mechanism to fund the manufacture and distribution of her latest cd - pretty neat, actually.

I was thinking Kickstarter as well.
I have started a Kickstarter account for this project. Here are the questions that need to be answered. I have put down suggested answers we can tweak before I submit.

What would you like to do?

Create a userland usb mass storage drive for Irix. Irix is an Unix operating system with solid hardware to run on. However, Irix is no longer being developed and the community would like to extend it's functionality. The goal is to raise money to develop an open source USB mass storage driver to extend the usefulness of of Irix.

Money raised will be used to acquire equipment and to offer bounties to developers.

What rewards would you offer?

All contributors will receive a T-shirt or a USB flashdrive with the project's logo.

Where can we find out more about you and your project?

www.nekochan.net

The goal will be to raise a $1,000-$2,000

Chime in with suggestions.

Regan's right. If people are serious, someone who knows what they are doing from a development perspective should identify a small, but meaningful piece of work, make that the first project, demonstrate success, and then proceed from there.

I agree with you. A small sample should rise the expectations a lot, and will probe the available firepower to the more hesitant. Mass storage is one of the biggest problems when you can't have good access to big/fast SCSI drives, and let's be honest: SCSI is everyday older, and the bigger sized drives are not so common for some countries... and the second hand market vary a lot.

Would not be fantastic to be able to use the same widely available drives from PeeCees?

What do you suggest should be the first small step then?
If Kickstarter accepts the project, then the first chunk of money raised will be a bounty. Anyone who wants to make a driver can claim all (or part) of the bounty. People can even work together and share the bounty,
How about this for a submission for Kickstart:

The goal is to raise money to develop an open source USB mass storage driver to extend the usefulness of of Irix.

Money raised will be used to acquire equipment and to offer bounties to developers. The development will be broken down into smaller goals:

1. Write a basic user land driver with the ability to mount and mount a usb file system with command line tools.

2. Write a kernel module for usb mass storage support. Enable the ability to read/write from a usb device.

3. A gui interface to usb drivers. Optionally, extended support for other usb items such as keyboards, mice and webcams.

As each step is finished, a bounty from money raised will be paid. The driver and code will be open source.

Worse comes to worse, I'll do something with PayPal. I have $50 set aside already for this project.
Last week I applied to Kickstarter for hosting for our upcoming USB Mass Storage bounty. Kickstarter just given the project preliminary approval but I need your help. Kickstarter would like more reward suggestions for contributors. I had initially suggested usb flash drives with the Nekochan logo.

I'd like to hear some suggestions on rewards the project can give contributors to the project.
No, it's just preliminary until we get details ironed out. Rewards is one of them.
