The collected works of tomo - Page 1

I'm using Autocad every day in my work for maybe 7 years and I realised that the 3 major changes until 12 (dos version).

release 13 - runs under windows, much slower then 12, uses icons instead of text fields. customizable, iconbars, using system printers to print - very useful! using system gfx card drivers - also very goot feature of porting to windows
release 2000 or 2002 - addeted properties button with extendet selection button.
release 2004 - new icon colors (changed from red to blue), moved plotstyle tables to hidden directory - very funny to see how my coworkers are seeking them :) total localization of czech version - even commands are translated! It made localized autocad almost unuseful, becouse using captions in commands etc... Much smaller file than older version cca -30%

We are using autocad with geomap upgrade, so I use plenty of non autocad functions, maybe more useful thinks are attached - but this "touchs" my everyday work

Sane/ xsane works fine big THANKS, but can be xsane packed somehow that the dependency on neko_gimp will be only optional? E.g if dependency is caused by some plugin or something similiar...

So today arrives my new CPU :) BIG THANKS to WLATHER...
Boost from my stock R5200/300 is incredible!
What else say?
Monitor connected to my O2 is mirovideo 22" with O2 camera sitting on it -> there is plenty of space :)
Compaq deutch keyboard (for me wery terrible becouse many characters on keys don't match what you get on screen with english setting)
Black logitech optical USB mouse - connected trough original USB/PS2 converter

Hardware unconnected to O2 or not connected everyday :
Adaptec 2940UW PCI SCSI adapter
100Mb PCI second network adapter - useless to me this time
Microtek 636 scanner (very low end but it works)
two ~10GB scsi disks - maybe I will use them somehow externaly

So this is my "number cruncher"

I was wery lucky guy, when I was buying O2 I can choose between R10k@195 and R5k@300 R5k@300 has much better skins, and also Ian on his sites nicely describes diferences between R10k and R5k configurations so I choose R5k even for it's lower integer performance.

After 1 month I'v statred to search "for something faster" and I realize that only one faster 5k cpu was released (7k@350) but I'v also realize that it is quite rare. Than I'v found that the 600MHz hack can be done - but after reading article about it I realized that I can't build it myself. So another searching, some mails, fired first deadline, waiting some time, and I have it :)

Xmms works good - shuffle play button now don't cause crash, icon is nice.

But one think: I have problem with output audio plugin, when I choose "irix audio plugin" as output xmms crashes immediately after start. But "SGI digital media output plugin works fine. (IRIX 6.5.26 on O2)

Before we move out of beta, can you check if you browse a MP3 library, what icon does the MP3s have?

//debug

At the start icons were old, xmms icon in iconmanager became in mediatools and was new. But after restart (maybe logout/ login can be enough) icons in fm became new. Most of icons are fine(95%), only one artist have text icons, but when I run file something.mp3 it displays: something.mp3 - text with the garbage. So problem is probably in filetype.

Hi Ian, I'v run blender render test on my O2 wit these results:

Often in my case is mutch better/ faster to run mplayer in this way:
Code:
npri -r 100 -s RR mplayer something.avi

This setting may cause (if video is too big to play smooth) total stop for other applications, even mouse pointer can stop responding.

Dexter - thanks for fantastic optimizations made to mplayer, I'm using it often so any even small improvement is welcome :)

Its called shake.

Regan

I'm using shake currently - but it is like killing flys with hammer. My tree in shake contents only these objects: 2xfile_in, layer and file out. Before shake I'v used gimp - but I must manually paste composited content to background image for every frame and then save to another file.

You mean in the regard that it only pays off going through the trouble of building a composite for more complex setups and operations? Because Shake itself sure is an extremely light-weight program for something as powerful as it. I don't know how well it runs on an O2 , like yours, but it flies on my machine.

Yes shake is fine at O2 as mine is. But I work "only" with PAL resolutions. I'v mean that it could be far more faster (if sutch program exists) to do it like this:
Code:
./composite frame_background.#.rgb frame_rendered_contents.#.rgb -o composited_output.#.rgb

it seems mutch more faster then running shake, add nodes and then render it out... Of course if I want color manipulation ower layers or add some effects, then Shake is really good choice.

I'm pretty sure Image Magick would do a great job at it. Relevant examples here .

for O2's is corrcet this command:
Code:
dmrecord -p video,device=mvp,comp=jpeg,engine=ice,brate=30000000 -p audio,channels=2 test.mv

only difference is that the device is not ice but mvp. Maybe for older Irixes is ice.

I tried it again with the command you posted but I can't get it to work. :?

It gives me:
Code:
audio buffer overflow (can't write movie file fast enough)
It works for around 8 seconds usually and then stops capturing. Without an audio track I was able to capture for minutes without a problem...

Is this related to the limited RAM (128MB) I have?

I also tried capturing using media tools -> movie recorder but after capturing it has to process the movie for ages... :x I mean, if the O2 does the jpeg compression in hardware it shouldn't have to do that right?!

And even using movie recorder it gave me buffer errors once or twice...

Hi, I have this command(found similiar version on Ian's pages) modified in aliases:
dmrecord -a -v -p audio -p video,comp=jpeg,quality=98 output.mv

Only limitation on my system is disk speed so I cant write fast enough video with quality=100. My disks are old SGI/IBM 9gb 7200rpm and capabe of ~7-9mb/s writes in classic use (big files copying). But this is done with 100% system load (checked trough top, copying done with neko_mc). It is normal?

Also you must have on mind that as disk becomes more filled, it SLOWS down writes. Not even talking about this alert window:
Code:
Filesystem '/dev/dsk/dks0d2s7', mounted as /mnt/somwhere is 95% full.

1-2 seconds before this happends O2 becomes like kicked to the head. After displaying alert window everything becomes normal again.

My sugestion is start with low quality parameters eg. 75 and then go higher.
Also don't run anything system demanding on background. Check it trough top maybe you will be surprised how many cpu power is wasted on something that do nothing - like neko_xmms on my system it draws 3% of cpu - when idling (not playing anything and is displayed on other desktop) Seamonkey & etc are mutch worst on this.

If you don't solve this problem I can strip my sytem to minimal ram config (64) and try to record some video we will see...

Many thanks! I'm using XV and ssh (probably as most users here) so icons are welcome! :)
I'v just add ftr file to blowfish so everyone can use it without problems. BTW very nice work with the fish.
xv icon did not work with drag and drop - so I'v fixed it.

And to "warm my own soup" I'v add my own created icon for neko_links. Icon file was posted on this forum somwhere else but this is stretched and have also corresponding ftr file.

As I know wine don't emulate instructions - it emulate enviroment (like dll's system calls and so). So porting it to Irix/ Mips is not a solution. And if you add speed penalty to emulated program than it will be somwhere far beyond useless.

If you want X86 program + windows buy ordionary hardware (witch is in most cases mutch cheaper than good SGI) and run it natively.

Since my O2 canibalized other non functional SGI it results in some HW upgrades. Namely memory 512 -> 576, and harddisk 2x9GB -> 18GB + 9GB. From crashed O2 I have spare parts like AV1 board, some 32MB memory sticks, CDROM. And maybe frontplane (I don't know if it must match mainboard).

"New" system disk is Quantum Atlas V 10k rpm 18GB drive.
Measured time for boot identical system (6.5.26) from total start of O2 is ~1.35min witch is better for ~12 seconds compared to old disk (I hoped for bigger speedup).

Hi, when my O2 was "death" I was using again my old thinkpad and I found nice angband multiplayer clone named mangband.

Compilation (gcc 3.2.3) under linux(2.4.36) was painless (thinkpad is running heavily modified slackware 8.0). So maybe it can be done in Irix too. Known dependencies: SDL.

thanks

Semonkey works on O2 well - that menas in usual speed & no issues with page displaying.

Having up to date webbrowser is nice on SGI's, but number of users probably will be less than 200 :( Maybe you could check download counts from nekochan and all mirrors (somehow) and you will see. I think not much (if any) of nekoware is copied trough CD's or local deposits. But maybe I'm wrong.

I'm not using Firefox or Thunderbird.

Thank's for your effort.

I don't know quality of original movie but 90% of ugliness is caused by interlacing. You must remove it from every frame to use video captured trough o2. I'v personally used imagemagick.
