Please test.

That's great Thank you Could you take a screenshot of SuperTuxKart 0.6.2a with IRIX desktop for supertuxkart.de ?

Hi all
I'v succesfuly installed neko_supertuxkart-0.6.2a.tardist on my O2.
There was few warnings - but button "ignore and contiune" solves them.
After executing supertuxkart it take about 30 seconds to get main menu.
Sound and FX works. I dont see any graphic errors or something similiar.
Game itself is so slow (maybe 4fps) even clocks are slow in game...

Hi I'v noticed this problem before some time - maybe 3 months. When I have reflective surfrace witch is behind transparent surfrace - Maya (5.0) don't calculate reflections on it...
On the first image (opened doors) glass have 1.52 refraction index, refraction limit is set to 6 (default) and reflection limit is 1 (default).
Drum have 0.95 reflectivity and no refractions, red ball have reflectivity set to 0.85 and also no refractions. All materials are phong.
Second image have same material/ rendering parameters but doors are closed. Visual deformations of space behind glass are fine, but no reflections at all. Also render times are not adequate 0:18:15 vs 0:03:56.
This is only small object witch will not have impact on whole scene, but I want use glass doors and then effect is huge.
Any hints please?

My fault - I'v set reflection limit in material editor for drum (chrome) to 4 but I'v not changed it for doors (glass) so it was still 1.
I think that that limit is reached when ray "hits" front of glass doors, so none reflections inside
But after tweaking it looks mutch better - this render have reflection limit set for all three reflective materials to 8 - it is bit bright but tweaking is now no problem.
Speed impact is not so tragic. This render tooks 0:41:43 while normal use of O2. If maya have all power of my system it can easily goes down under 0:30:00. Also I'm not planning to look inside "wash machine" (I can't remember right word).
Thanks guys many times

Yes reflective coeficient is below 1 - but maya also have "light absorbance" in raytrace/refractive settings witch is default set to 0. I'll try some renders with different parameters to see how it changes.
And no, I don't have light source inside - light is only one default render light from maya (I think it's directional light with no dropoff).
Solution was quite simple - addiding light to scene. I'v addedet directional light with bitmap shadows and vuala: magic is done!
Rendering of this image take - 17 mins when O2 was only rendering and 37 mins when playing music and browsing web (also resolution of shadow map was increased from 1024 na 2048)

The Octane and O2 have lots to like, not the least of which is an attractive appearance and great hardware/engineering. If you want to collect SGI hardware for occasional use, exposure to some of the third-party applications of the era, or just the IRIX experience, I don't think you could go wrong with either.
If your goal is a general purpose IRIX desktop for daily use, I'd suggest skipping over the Octane and going to a 600MHz or faster Fuel. Or keep the O2/Octane and use them as the display for an O300 or O350.

How it is with OpenGL then? I mean when O2 is used as terminal to O300 (if I have O350 I'd like to put Vpro in it). As I know O300 don't have any display adapter. So can O2 somehow render OpenGL locally using CRM even if application is running remotely on O300, or it must be rendered in SW on O300 and then send to O2 trough network as images?
Something like :
Code:
remote_workstation$ xv -display sgi_O2:0 image.jpg
Thanks tomo

I hope it is not a irony. I'v user maya build in render - becouse mental ray take me long to setup - lights, bit another using of materials and not even talking about rendering times
Object (all scene) is *very* simple, so only thing witch can do it nicer/ original was that drum. For better underestand of material setting look in maya how it is made - only one disadvantage for anybody curious will be Slovak language used when naming. I recomend using "select objects with material" from material editor to get imagination...

Hi I know that on O2 HW agregator is power consumption of O2 measured. But last week I'v done measuring of my system R7000@600, 2xHDD, 1xCDRW, 2x128+4x64+2x32 RAM, AV1 board and camerra attached to it. It took 94W idling and 110W peak witch is bit more than in agregator. Measured on standard 220V wall outlet.

So what is the options - thanks...

There is fully working - possibly nice extended octane sitting on the ground for free or for monays spend on gfx - I think it is worth drive for anyone who begins with sgi's and is living in england.

After long period I have booted my o2 - it take a while becouse of reseating procedure.
Then system nicely boots up in ordinary user account. But in five minutes I realized that I
don't know root passwd anymore.
Is there some kind of easy hack/ exploit for irix 6.5.22 to obtain root again?
In normal enviroment I would pull out disk insert it to another machine and change passwd with something known.
But I don't have any other system capable of reading SCSI disks.
At least I had rw-r--r-- permissions on /etc/passwd (probably caused by backup/ restore whole system several times) so I downloaded it to my PC and started to crunch it trough john.
Thanks for your help. Tomo

After few years I try to start my O2 (R7k 600) again. There were some problems with reseating and so. Now I have green light, O2 logo, boot sound, than disk read few sectors, monitor turn to black and nothing go ON. Led is still green.
I have figured out that I can run sash trough build in console, there I can list hdd (ls) whitch sucessfuly list it. But when I try to boot unix or unix.save I got blank screen. Can it be damaged HDD?
Is there some useful commands in sash? I can even cat file (says no device).

Tested with 'single' command - still black screen -- I'll try resetenv as a next step, than I try to boot Installation CD.
I figured out that I have only "installation" disks 6.5.22 downloaded years ago from sgi supportfolio. So my next step is to chase "fully working" set of disks.
EDIT:
When I start installation from CD's O2 go black after again after "copyiing installation tools" part. So problem is somwhere else (not HDD). Memtest(2,3) show no errors. All basic test pass. I will try to change memory sticks anyway and see what will happend...
