right on, it saved my day many times

best (s)ftp/webdav gui i ever tried, Transmit is ok but i do prefer Interarchy

also for any of you with a huge library of (real) books, Books is worth trying (it's the free equivalent of Booxter which will also archive music/images etc)

heh joerg, i dig your coded answers :)

And all the info have to be in the article and not like a link list which points to the forum or other resources. To be fair place add a link list to the bottom.

hmm yup the o2+fuel aggregators are already there (+ growing from time to time), with so many octane owners here, it'd be really easy to come up with one more... david (recondas) is also working on some big iron entries (pure quality dave, pics and clear descriptions)

what other (archived +useful enough) topics should make it to the wiki..?

Anything and everything. :)

i think it should be more eclectic, otherwise it'll end up being a copy of nekochan fora in a different format..?

(i don't know really that's why i'm asking)

Fu, a good topic for the wiki is the 1600sw, considering how many threads come up concerning them...

good idea scot, iirc there's a lot of (technical) info here scattered around in various topics...

tillin9 wrote:
Also we might want to add mention of the clear O2s on the O2 page, and a pic of each of the O2 old, new, O2+, and clear skins.

sounds good too, hmm besides neko i can't receall anyone else owing a clear o2, pics for the old/new o2, o2+ would be easier to aquire (i should take some of myo2 when i get back 2 berlin again)
i'm looking @ the wiki and sorting out some sources to update/add entries

i bumped into contradictory statements regarding o2 RAM:

There are 8 DIMM slots on the motherboard and memory on all O2s is expandable to 1 GB using proprietary 239-pin SDRAM DIMMs.

The O2 uses custom memory modules - they can be found from time to time on ebay, but are rare and expensive. They are special 278pin DIMMs...

NekoWiki wrote:

Type: 139pin SDRAM DIMMs (proprietary)

i don't have my o2 in london so i cannot check, could someone else confirm..?
tillin9 wrote:
I think 139 and 278 are both right, though 278 is more correct. I counted the pins on one of my modules and got 139 per side, so 278. My 128MB modules are double sided, but some Kingston 64MB modules (I happen to have two) are just half a 128MB module and 139. At the very least 239 is wrong.

thanks for clarifying scott

tillin9 wrote:
Possibly a picture for the wiki might be helpful, I'll see if I can get some shots of my modules. I have 128MB (SGI and Kingston), 64MB (Kingston), and 32MB (SGI).

yup i was thinking of updating the Memory section by adding the colo(u)r-code info...

tillin9 wrote:
Also, how does one add pictures to the wiki?

see dave's links for the wiki:editing cheat seats on the previous page

tillin9 wrote:
I can't believe our O2 page doesn't have a picture of an O2! I'll volunteer pics of my cube style O2 for the old style pic.

hex, strange...
i'll have to take some funky shots of mine next time i get to athens...

update :

i added some more info on the o2 page (mostly CPU + Memory Tables)
just added some basic VPro info: http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/index.php/VPro + cross-linked http://www.nekochan.net/wiki/index.php/SGI_VPro

(detailed VPro info seems hard to find)
tillin9 wrote:
the tables style doesn't match the others in the wiki (personally I think yours is nicer and the others should be changed),

thanks for the links scott, that's what i meant in a previous reply, (let's post here some good sources so i/we can have a starting point..)

the o2 page is so much better now, i went through the red links and revived most of them (SDRAM, DIMM etc)..

tillin9 wrote:

speaking of consistency, it would be good a good idea to rephrase some titles @ the How To page, to correct the syntax

ie:

How To: Add Pictures to the Login Screen vs. How To: Access(ing) a CDROM's Volume Header
added some info (and a separate section) about o2's video system, i also put a thumb of the o2 cam (from diego's album@nekogallery) to see how/if it aligns...

if anyone has any pics of the AV1/AV2 boards, feel free to add them or send me a link and i'll do it.. tillin is right, we gotta put some pics of the o2

(@scott: thanks for the router info)

joerg+schleusel rock 8-)

thanks a ton for the IRIX Installation and Customization article

hmm most likely a timebase error, search for TBC, there's a ton of threads about it (quickest shortcut is to get a decent tbc in order to capture properly)

making sure nothing heavy runs in the background will also help

edit: jimmer's quick explanation
smokin' work Dr.!

just added 2 the list

quick question: a quick search in ebay (com/de/uk), returned 0. is this one some really exotic, hard to find model or just "old"?

(i read that chris, our fc man, has never tested one, so this model is probably exotic(?))

edit: my bad, looks like the "f" after the model makes a difference when searching ebay
lil thinkpad hit the saloon for a cold one but hey billy the kid was moody that day

…rich gifts wax poor when givers prove unkind

(but they went for male-only names)
eM, sorry can't brief you much on the inside tech side, i'm just an artist.

iirc some of their machines used to run on motorolas 68k (but everything was custom back then), which is a chip that i've heard the most stories about (from tech-talk to conspiracy theories)

their paintbox that jdanna mentions was always connected to a Mac acting as a peripheral server (at least in the studio setups i've been working back then), pushing/pulling stills/freeze frames from/to the art dept.

i used quantells briefly during my early (and short-lived) tv days, i wouldn't call them extremely hard to use as an overall experience tho i'm not sure if the guys that used to support or pay for them would say the same thing

edit: here's a hysterically-paced piece that sows some typical old-school quantel setup

bah! save your passion for better things. why worry about the typical "business" 5 year old pissing contest between 2 logos?

eMGee wrote:
I remember how amazed I was at how speedy the O2 was back then...

brand names, logos and other subjective preferences aside, do you also remember the feeling?

i mean, we would just sit in front of a computer and we would start working on it. we wouldn't care much about numbers. and it would take some time to "render"/output our final work. so what? no one ever died and some really decent work(s) came out.
that's why i asked you -i gather from your posts that you're an artist/designer-

just wanted to hear your pov :)
i used to deal with this some time ago when i was full of CRTs, i just can't remember right now how i used to do it :(

let me check my bookmarks
looks like my memory blank is over

i used to use SxitchResX but i also found bookmarks for other solutions: 1 , 2 .

i also used a VTBook back then /w my Pismo, it's a hw solution and not what you're asking but their product line may prove to be helpful sometime

sounds interesting, you can make the best of sweetspots or favour one and drop the other but choice is there :)

eMGee wrote:
As for my preference and passion for MIPS/IRIX, well, is there anything with the same nowadays?

uhmm dunno, your passion comes from you, only you can find out what fits your taste/needs.

i guess that the (feeling) word i picked a few posts up was wrong. i mean that everything gets to be whatever you treat it to.

a few years ago all this was kinda exotic. we would sit down to work with computers and then go home or to a bar. now we have a bunch of computers in every form/size and we're talking numbers more than just using them. glut ruins the kicks we used to get. fan noise too, most likely.

eMGee wrote:
Even the so-called “Linux advantage” that was promised to IFFFS customers doesn't even come close to what IRIX used to and still provides.

why give 2 funks about sales talk?

i bet that most sgi hw will end up to nekochan members, so you can still run your ifffs setup on irix and shift your passion to your design technique/ideas or to that blonde/brunette/whatever across the bar :)

would you be unhappy if you'd work w/ a linux-based ifffs @work and an irix-based one @home?

btw, the typical ifffs customers circle does not include anyone who can get a rack of equipment for $50 and put it in his bedroom.

(blame kbrd fro all typos)
eMGee wrote: ... there's really nothing out there on the usual auction sites.

c'mon eM, that'd spoil everything...

use your charm and hang around tv buildings, make friends w/ janitor or seduce the receptionist and get to the storage room. room labelled B1 has all the stuff to be recycled/scraped. when inside, you know what to do :)

eMGee wrote: Who was conspiring against who...?

everyone! the epitome of the c.theories was that it was so good that a major force kicked in to use it all for itself, no mass market anymore. probably because there were so many implementations based on 68k, i'd use 3 different ones daily back then:

-how old are you? i mean, do you remember how long it used to take the typical home computer just to display a 4-colour blob on screen? and what happened when you tried to drag its window from one side to the other? some of them were based on 68k

-Quadra 840av or the superpimped NeXT cube (called Dimension something), live video feed w/ texture señor? based on 68k, different price tag.

-and then on the high end there was Quantel/SGI, making use of 68k chips for a very specific part of the a/v industry and a price tag not to be funked with.
worry not diego, it ain't Mayan stupidity, human nature is still on a vicious circle

just turn off the TV and life's wonderful, grab your wife/partner and the kid and go for a walk :)

ditto@josehill, just keep the kid(s) as far as possible from the tv box, it's bad for their imagination + perception

mr VP's back? where's your skate man?

qtvr is alive, qtvras is a zombie, officially discontinued but floating around the interwebs. apple says there's still software to do it on current macs.

i haven't done anything serious since the days of MacOS 8.x with it.

VenomousPinecone wrote:

that sounds like lots of shooting and a really fast button-pusher assistant for stitching it all together and feeding the website.

hw-wise you don't have to spend lots of money VP, just a mac and some honest-to-goodness photographic equipment. i've no idea if this is the best practice for fast web publishing though.
check the usual suspects for plug-in inferno like bri3d mentions. i guess flash will be more of a pain too (html5?). whatever the sw, it'll take lots of shooting (most likely on white background).

set things up the way you like and if you need any help, just press the buzzer

eM, is the layout of your workspace still similar to the photos of your 1st post?

how's the noise coming out of the tez? can you work for more than 1h? could you do a quick+dirty vid w/ the mic being 1m away from it?

all the ones i've seen so far were in a separate room or inside a rack.

looks so dang seKsy!

you are kowalski, recondas is supersoul, sky is chief policeman leading the young ones (pent, sybr, aj et al). i'll probably have to write a new character for neko's stoicism (garage owner w/ the funky engines?). we'll need a few girls too but i'll work on it.

oh no! not another graph!

guys this ain't about science
porter wrote: Some people are more vacant that others.

got some vinyl of The Smiths?
one problem is that we confuse science (and some of its experiments/achievements) w/ everything else (happiness, evolution, civilization etc). science alone won't solve all our problems. each science boasts a bunch of indexes and graphs, measures something while discarding anything else. we have to start looking at the whole picture.

another basic problem is that we overestimate our (human) kind. up to the point that the us smart , them dumb mindset does not end with puberty as it should. scientists call the mass dumb, artists call the mass dumb, mass call the mass dumb, it's a vicious circle. what a fantastic, reasonable, educated piece of work!

get a bunch of nobel-prized scientists, a bunch of well known artists, a bunch of janitors and some eskimo fishermen. when you're done hearing each other's bragging start discussing about their personal aspects. and hey! they're all facing the exact same issues with their partners and the rest of their (inter)personal aspects. smart what? dumb what?

it feels ok to bitch about the (other) mass, good old placebo pill to make the rest of the titles stand out for a while. it's easy to call now dumb, something that a civilization of the pre-classic period guessed back then. just as it's always easy to blame a majority of the population for reproducing mass media hysteria. when you take them off the g'dang tv box, motivate/educate them, nice things happen . lo + behold the few clowns w/ monkey suits wouldn't like that, gotta keep 'em hypnotized to get the votes on Sunday and keep ripping them off (some people think this is called freedom/democracy). problem is why "we" educated fools fail to recognize the booby-traps.

about those damned sci-fi movies of the 80s? all the fake intelligence and smartassness that they were pushing to the mass for 2000AD?

damn scientists! where is my jetpack?
^ oh no! semiological catastrophe!

i was just hoping for an open, bare, no masks, no titles discussion…
