Well it's a workaround I guess, but it's also kind of cludgy to have to keep disabling Windows Update to prevent this. If only there was an option similar to Windows 7 to "notify of updates but let me choose when to download and install them"...

It is a fair point, as Belluzzo was also involved in another major shift of strategy during his time which mas often been credited as leading to SGIs downfall - he settled with Nvidia. It was the lawsuit SGI was widely expected to win, and could have meant a steady licensing revenue stream for SGI's graphics technologies. Instead, he basically gave free access to Nvidia for all of SGIs graphics technology, and SGI also handed over most of its graphics engineers to Nvidia as well. Long term, not exactly a smart move...

I also wasn't able to get any success with WRP. If there's a working alternative, it'd be neat to use something such as Netscape or Dillo to render via an image map from another machine (or similar). It'd certainly work for a lot more sites than Firefox 3.0.19 can manage, and at quicker speed too.

Nice, thanks! I enjoyed all the section on motion tracking. Interesting that they mention a lot about NDI's Optotrak in there - my wife still has a working (and regularly used) Optotrak 3020 in her lab, and I remember seeing IRIX as one of the supported OSs for it originally.

Well there's two parts to it. First of all as others have said, it's a hobby. Thankfully my wife understands my hobby and doesn't mind my man-cave (within reason).

For what I do with them, allsorts! I enjoy playing around with IRIX, scripting in Perl, trying to port/compile certain apps (despite my limited knowledge here), I use my Indigo2 for ripping vinyls (though I do usually do the final clean of the audio with Audition on my PC). I don't do a huge amount of productive things with them, but in short, they're a fun hobby.

It's the same reason some people buy classic cars. You know the performance is poor, the economy isn't great and they're way behind with fancy gadgets, but they look cool, they're enjoyable and nostalgic to drive, and tinkering around with them is good fun that some people enjoy.

From what I found online for it:

The Scalable Graphics Compositor (SGC) can recieve 2 or 4 DVI digital video inputs and combine them into a single video output with increased performance. Input is provided by 2 or 4 InfinitePerformance graphics pipelines (in V-Brick) that render only a part of the full screen.

Part of the issue is that a lot of software licenses do state that they aren't transferable. Not all of course, but plenty do mention it. Hence with such software, even though you've bought a legal license, it can be illegal to re-sell it.

The writing has been on the wall for a long while. It's interesting to see how many times Intel has tried to introduce new architectures to complement or replace x86, and each time they've failed badly.

Still, Itanium will unfortunately be remembered for killing off Alpha, MIPS and PA-RISC as so many jumped onto the Itanium bandwaggon, so Intel will still feel that good came of it.

It's at times like this that you enter the dodgy area of abandonware. Maya isn't abandonware because it's still available for sale. Would it be morally wrong to acquire an SGI copy for free despite them refusing to sell one to you? Probably. Would it be morally wrong though to buy a license for PC and then acquire an SGI copy from somewhere? Probably not, but you can still understand why Neko doesn't like such discussion here.

Personally, I'd always recommend cloning the original disk first. Just always gives you something to go back to if you need it, then gives you the freedom to play around with the Fuel - knowing you've got a copy of all the original data in case you do want to find an old license or something. Of course, I've got about 25 spare hard drives kicking around, so I've no shortage of drives for this

They can be more expensive, but it varies. Also because SGI made several different IMPACT-ready PSUs. There's a 36A one and a 48A one, plus several different revisions of them. There's a full list of the different ones on Ian's site in his parts section.

It's also worth nothing that Prosilver is the default theme, so unless you've changed your theme, the Donate button will appear the next time Pete needs some donations. He typically only opens it for a few days at a time until he has sufficient funds to keep Nekochan running for a while.

I have to disagree. When I started at my current company, I had two 19" screens running at 1280x1024 and quickly stuffed a 24" 1920x1200 one in the middle. Over the next few months I found a couple of 20" 4:3 screens (1600x1200) and the difference it makes when you have spreadsheets open is very noticeable. I find 1280x1024 a bit too constricting for my work.

I've finally set up my man-cave again after moving house last Monday. It's quite a faf when you have 16 things to plug in around your desk, including 4 systems (5 if you count my work's laptop dock), 3 monitors, 2 KVMs, a sound system, a wireless range extender, a gigabit switch, a NAS, etc. etc - all whilst keeping the wife happy about the tidy and hidden routing of cables etc.

Still, it does mean my Indigo2 and Fuel are back out of the garage and are set up and working again, so that's good!

Felt very productive! My old room was a bit of a mess as more and more things had been added over time. Always nice to have a clean slate, spend a good few hours setting everything up, have it all working properly at the end, and a happy wife who still sees a tidy room

On the subject of Windows 10, a leaked MS build suggests they *may* release a Windows 10 Workstation edition.

I know the feeling. Due to being in charge of local IT for a major company here over the last few years, I had first-hand involvement with the retirement of lots of old servers containing SCA SCSI hard drives (including an AS400 with thirty five 36GB 15k drives in it).

Following the wiping of all of these, I snaffled enough of the drives to keep me going for a very long time before the servers went into the WEEE skip. I'd guess I've got around 25 drives ranging from 36GB right up to 300GB.

They're preparing to wipe the old file server soon, that has another twelve 146GB to 300GB drive in it that I want
