Hi!

My Fuel has arrived today. I was very happy. I plugged in everything needed and pushed the power button. Solid red light, blinking white light and automatic power off  What the hell is that? :(
I don't have any experience with SGI machines but I'd like to have ...

I've connected the Fuel with my BeOS machine through serial connection. Here's the outpput what I've got:

I wouldn't like to argue but L1 port on my Fuel looks like usb connector on my HP Deskjet.
I can recognize a serial port connector

I connected the cable to the motherboard but I've not received any "readable" output. I can type in if it's needed. Maybe wrong settings?

Is it possible to upgrade that evil L1 monitor?

If it wasn't for the lack of working PSUs, I'd put a number of Indigos on eBid, low start, no reserve. I must have
nearly 30 Indigos, but nowhere near enough working PSUs, R3K or otherwise, so in my garage they must stay for
the moment. :\ ( pic 1 , pic 2 ; taken after new shelves purchased back in January. More Indigos are stored elsewhere)

I do have a number of CPU/gfx boards which I'll list soonish, but no systems to list until I can find some more PSUs.
That's a real problem with Indigo now: the TOD battery can be replaced, but finding more PSUs is a pain. However,
I heard from someone who's rigged up a normal ATX PSU inside the original PSU case, but it's a lot of work.

Ian.

No, lack of money :( It looks like I can get an R4k config in good shape but unfortunately w/o sled(s) and with LG1 gfx. It's hard to get an SGI here in Hungary so I'm more than happy that this beauty showed up.

Whoa  Really nice config, such a beauty!!! Congrats for undamaged crates - I'm always nervous when I'm waiting for a comp from abroad - you know, bad experiences with uPs :? Everything that was shipped by them I've got with heavily damaged packaging. Fortunately there are careful packagers ;)

Are these drives quiet? I'm looking for a quiet drive for my I2. I've already found a Seagate Cheetah 15K.4 36GB but it's too expensive :(

It's a scam. No one on the earth with more than 2 neurons would buy these machines for such a price. I've got an AlphaServer 300 4/266 for free (more precisely from dumpster) and a PWS 433a for ~25 Euros and I speak about Hungary, not USA where IT stuff is much cheaper ...

Not possible, at least not in a deskside. Only 5 E-bus slots, and you need at least one for memory, and one for I/O. So max is 3 CPU boards. I'll have to settle for 12 * R10K 8-) But they will be the 2MB L2 model.

OK, my bad, I've had 12 proc system on my mind :) According to lunatic it's possible so I'm really excited how it could be done.

I've got the guts of an old IBM PC - mobo, isa riser card, fdd and psu. The mb fru is 87F4769, psu Zytec EP 071120 90W (IBM GBMno27F4920, IBM ENGno27F4919). After a lot of googleing turned out that the mb is from an PS/2 8525 model 25sx (it looks out like this but it has 2MB of memory) or PS/1 model 2123. PSU was identified as it comes from PS/1 Pro 386sx. Any idea? :?:

BTW the board powers up, but it throws 163 and 161 errors even after replacing the battery :(

I've spotted a tarball named Irix 6.5.5 source code on a site dedicated to share data between people ;) My question is if it really contains the source code does it have any real value nowadays? The mentioned version was released in 1999 and doesn't support any 'modern' SGI hw :(
Thanks for sharing your opinion :)

Hi guys,
I've got a V240 and I was very happy but the machine produces unbearable noise which drives me crazy. I'd like to have and use a SPARC machine but the only way to achieve that is by making it (more) silent.
My idea is building a custom case with a silent power supply and fans. I found out that the V240 system board is quite similar to the Blade 2500 mainboard . There's a thread on Nekochan about rewiring an ATX PSU for Blade 1500 .
My question: is it possible to build such a machine? Where can I find the V240 system board PSU pinouts?

Thanks a lot,
indyboy

I'm not sure if the V240 Service Manual or othe docs found here will include that - you may need to find a copy of the Field Engineers Guide that includes that model.

Were I in your situation, I'd first look at just replacing the fans and seeing how far that would get me - start by checking noise (dbA) specs for current fans versus likely replacements. But in the end, keep in mind it may be cheaper to buy/trade for a 2500 than rig a V240 for "silent running."

I think replacing the fans wouldn't be so hard except the PSU where I'd risk the destroying of the PSU(s) with a not suitable fan :?
It's a low-end config with 1 GHz CPU and 2GB of memory w/ disks but in good shape and I have the rails too. I highly doubt that I can trade it even for a Blade 150 :)

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but I've tested the following drives with success in my Indigo2:

36GB, 15K, ST336754LC (Moderate noise)
36GB, 15K, ST336753LC (Low noise)
36GB, 15K, ST3146855LC (VERY Low noise) - my current Indigo2 system drive

73GB, 15K, ST373454LC (Moderate noise)
73GB, 10K, ST373207LC (Low noise)
73GB, 10K, BD07285A25 (Quite noisy, I use one of these as an OS clone disk for my Indigo2)
73GB, 10K, ST173404LCV (1.8" high, noise level unknown as it was provided as an original OS clone disk with my system).

146GB, 15K, ST3146855LC (VERY Low noise)

300GB, 10K, ST3300007 (Moderate noise)
300GB, 10K, BD3008A4B6 (An HP re-badged Seagate Atlas 10K V) (Low noise) - my current Indigo2 data drive

Like I say, just in case anyone finds it remotely useful...

The 36GB and 146GB 15k disks have the same model number :)
