best anime movies ever - absolutely must haves - Page 1

Hi.

What do you think are the best anime movies ever - the movies I have to see, if I like this genre ?

I only saw AKIRA and some Crying freeman, and some Initial D and Tetsuo (but thats not anime:-)) , but I am loving it! :-) ))))))))))

What movies should I ve been loking for? Thanks a lot!
Well, if we are talking about movies, for me it was "The place promised us in early days"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381348/

it's not one of those figthing anime, rather it is more about emotions.

and from childhood it is Princess mononoke, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119698/ , I guess everyone saw it :)

And one more, Appleseed, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401233/ , was pretty nice also.

I must note, that I have rather strange taste for anime/manga, so I bet most of you anime fans won't agree with my selection...

I've got a terrible memory for movie names. but here goes.
one of my favorites is cowboy bebop: Knockin on heaven's door.
flcl/furi kuri is another favorite
all studio ghibli ( http://www.nausicaa.net )
read or die
ghost in the shell
macross plus
patlabor
ah my goddess/ oh my goddess the movie

two movies that really shouldn't be watched before the series are the evangelion movies, and the kenshin movies

finally, jin-roh the wolf brigade is probably the best movie I've ever seen from both the technical, and emotional standpoint. that said, it's a big downer.
Princess Mononoke, All the Patlabor Movies, Ghost in the Shell, and Cowboy Bebop Knockin on Heavens Door are the Anime Movies I like that I seen.
"The place promised us in early days" aka "Beyond the Clouds" is freaking awesome, one of the best things I've ever watched, period. It was really moving.

I also loved Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke. The Patlabor movies are pretty cool too if you're into police/detective type of shows.

Turns out I have none to add :P but they really are good.

Ninja Scroll is also awesome, forgot that one. X is pretty nifty too albeit kinda strange.

I really liked Spirited away, but I think it is covered by TeeTylerToe's blanket assertion
all studio ghibli ( http://www.nausicaa.net )
I liked a couple of the others, I think they were called something like "Tonari no Totoro" and "Majo no Takkyuubin"..

thx very much for all your comments :-)

I like more action/mecha/sci-fi kind of anime.

It is not anime , but as a child I loved cartoons like (the M.A.S.K. (1985), Jayce and the wheeled warriors (it is interesting that it was made in Japan studios) and Transformers).

Movies are one thing TV series are another. Movies don't carry in jokes along, sometimes they seem compressed version of a really good series, however you can see a movie in 2 or 3 hours, some series run for dozens of hours.

One thing to consider is that everyones tastes are different and are potentially looking for different things... There is comedy, drama, action and probably several other categories.

For comedies, I like the relatively short series, Full metal panic FUMOFU... Especially the bits about Bonta-kun (armoured bear with huge arsenal of weapon including rocket launchers, etc) and the psycho female cop who trashes the police car in the pursuit.. Silly but very fun. There are some references to the Full Metal Panic series, and some in-jokes.

For historical drama I really like Ruroni Kenshin, I have the 22 DVDs of this series. Very interesting take.

For action, Initial D, is quite good action series with a great sound track (at the beginning of the 1st series), but story suffers in the 4th or 5th series. The movie suffered a little but if you have not seen the series the movie might be ok.

GTO is another faviourite series.

Captain Harlock/Galaxy Express are both excellent shows.

Lost Universe is also pretty funny and of course the Tenchis too.

Bringing this thread up again...

Just recently joined here...my faves (to date) would have to be:

Princess Mononoke
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service
(think there's a trend here... )
Cowboy Bebop (have the backdrop, love the series and the movie)
FLCL (not a movie but still fab!)
Macross Plus
Macross: Do you Remember Love (Love it!)
Patlabor

and funny enough....Cyber City Odeo 808...Weird, yes!

If I had to pick an all time favourite series though, it would be Cowboy Bebop...without question!

Now if only I could find another series like Cowboy Bebop..!

Jacques.

edit: Forgot the one movie that had me in tears!!! Grave of the Fireflies...
No SGI box currently...Snif!
Full Metal Panic, Blue Gender, Nausicaa, TRIGUN!!!
