Hi all,

I just pruchased a PCI cage. I put it in the machine in accordance with the tech pubs guide.

When I power on the machine it boots up normally, but memory consumption goes through the roof, I have /usr/nekoware on a separate drive and it can not resolve libs for nekoware apps, everything is noticably s-l-o-w-e-r, almost glacial, general malaise. Shut it down pull the cage out and the machine is back to normal

Do I a have a dodgey PCI, a stuffed xbow or power problems or something else...?

[EDIT] I forgot to add the I can see the PCI cage in the hinv:

If you really want to be paranoid you can use open source security tools, tcpdump, ethereal, etc..
( http://www.phptr.com/bookstore/product.asp?isbn=0321194438&rl=1 ) and also "attack" your own machine, turn off telnet for starters and use ssh for logins..

At least one bank here offers a service to send via SMS a (RSA?) key to be typed in before login completes(aka one time password). All banks here offer tokens (little LCD to put on your key ring), which are sync'd to a (RSA?) server.

User knows something(password/PIN) and user has physical posession of something (token, phone, etc) is safer than just user knows something..
Banks need to shoulder at least partial responsibility on managing ID theft.
Ask your bank what they use or switch to a bank that offers a more secure service if you need.

Yes I do (did), but sorry you lost me there... turning off event monitoring and logging...
how and why has that fixed things..? isnt no logging/monitoring dangereous..?

I'm running 6.5.27m btw.

WTF? I just turned esp back on in chkconfig rebooted and everything is mystereousily work fine again... even with logging on.

Helps me out if it keeps a MSFT tech support engineer busy for about a nano second, which will slow their march on niche markets by a small fraction of that.. Or it upsets their statistics of reported failures.

I am not so much worried about support from sgi or anyone, or even security, what worries me is something failing siliently, unknown to me, and I think everythings fine until one day it all turns around and bites me in the ... What is it they say.. known knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns or some gibberish like that..?

I hate suprises, especially nasty ones, I guess it is my nature to be a bit retentive... Just like a cat is a cat is a cat.. Its the nature of things.

Anyway, I always turn esp off 'cause it seems to speed things up so dramatically.

I will take that under advisement when considering performance issues.

Ok, let me see if I have this straight.

First build packages using the rules in the previous post, target R5000 and above, etc, IRIX 6.5.22 and above, etc, port/compile with preferably MIPSpro 7.4.x, etc...

After that use nekotool to create template with the values given in environment variables:
NEKOPKGNAME name of the packages, e.g. gtk for neko_gtk
NEKOPKGVERSION version of the package, e.g. 2.7.5 for neko_gtk
NEKOBUILDER name of the package-builder, e.g. Tobias Paprotta
NEKOBUILDERCONTACT contact information for the package-builder,
e.g. ( mailto:[email protected] )

After using nekotool to create *.idb, *.spec and *.test files use gendist to create the *.tardist file.

It puts things in /usr/nekoware, and I think it is a valid tardist, built with MIPSpro 7.4.4

Edit: While I am thinking about it... It is not that hard to test. Use a compiler either MIPSpro or gcc and compile with the -s flag to generate assembler from any C or C++ code.. Assemble the .s code with /usr/nekoware/bin/as object dump or octal dump (od -c) or nm or strings or whatever you like with result and try linking it with /usr/nekoware/bin/ld against something say glibc.

I have fixed gnu binutils, as best of my knowledge, it should be ok.
This will give linker and assembler to people who dont have MIPSpro.

I have Debian installed on my Alphaserver 4100 and it works very well.

It is a little known fact the Alphas running Linux can run OSF/1 binaries by copying the link loader and a whole bunch of share objects across.. I did when I had my personal Alpha in my office and one of the universities Alpha on the same subnet. I could run one or two apps with it. Not exactly legal in the licensing terms. But DEC didn't seem too concerned about it.

I run Tru64 now and work with VMS from time to time so its all good.

Linux is not that well supported on most SGI machines.

SCSI disks are cheap, and since it sounds the system is going to be used to simply dick around, just install whatever...

Gentoo (Linux) runs just fine on one of my O ctanes.... It still runs Irix 95% of the time. I run Linux on it because I can. Choice is a damn fine thing, but sometimes I refuse to choose, and just say damn it run everything . It takes less than a minute to swap boot disks and given the situation I would dual boot between Tru64 and OpenVMS and with enough disks and the ability to switch between SRM and ARC firmware, Linux and *BSD too.

Yup, Windows does not play nice with other O/Ses and boot blocks, primary/secondary drives, etc.. install Windows first and then install Solaris second.

Does anyone know if just any PCI graphics card will work with this beast:

I have the service manual, user guide and installation manual.
You can plug a keyboard and mouse into it and one of the manuals shows it being used as a deskside.

Can I just stick in any crap PCI graphics card or does it have to be IBM special...?

Correct.

Hooking a null modem serial cable 8N1 speed is 38400 for Origin if i recall, 9600 for some other SGI systems.
You should get a text menu or a login: prompt.
Hitting Control and T, should get you into L1.
There should be a command set on techpubs.sgi.com for L1..
I type help and figure out the commands from there for my L1 and L2.
From memory, stuff I have typed lately in L1 include "env" and "power down" to show environment settings and I recall fan speeds and temperatures... Sorry I hope this makes sense... really really tired..

Thanks. Very helpful. I will go looking for a Matrox G200 (GXT130P) now..

Particularly probelmatic for me is the serial cables I have dont seem to work except on the Origin. I have a serial debug box with LEDs on it and the output doesn't make sense. The guy I bought it off had a "custom built" cable.

I have to watch the codes on the display until it comes up with Starting AIX. Then I telnet in and run aixterms to what ever display I am using..
I put a second memory riser in it so I could in theory go the full 32Gb. But if I had stuffed that up or the riser caused a fault...

I just wrote my first AIX Gnome application on AIX and ran it on one of the O ctane displays.
Furthermore it was a Gnome 2.0 application..

The errors could come from any (not just Gnome) X application that is asking the X server to do soemthing it doesn't have features for..

Give me a couple of days and I could track down something about the error. I have easily have a couple of book shelves of X11 books.

Movies are one thing TV series are another. Movies don't carry in jokes along, sometimes they seem compressed version of a really good series, however you can see a movie in 2 or 3 hours, some series run for dozens of hours.

One thing to consider is that everyones tastes are different and are potentially looking for different things... There is comedy, drama, action and probably several other categories.

For comedies, I like the relatively short series, Full metal panic FUMOFU... Especially the bits about Bonta-kun (armoured bear with huge arsenal of weapon including rocket launchers, etc) and the psycho female cop who trashes the police car in the pursuit.. Silly but very fun. There are some references to the Full Metal Panic series, and some in-jokes.

For historical drama I really like Ruroni Kenshin, I have the 22 DVDs of this series. Very interesting take.

For action, Initial D, is quite good action series with a great sound track (at the beginning of the 1st series), but story suffers in the 4th or 5th series. The movie suffered a little but if you have not seen the series the movie might be ok.

GTO is another faviourite series.
