I really liked Spirited away, but I think it is covered by TeeTylerToe's blanket assertion
all studio ghibli ( http://www.nausicaa.net )
I liked a couple of the others, I think they were called something like "Tonari no Totoro" and "Majo no Takkyuubin"..

All I have to say about that is... Catbus rules!

Woo!. I noticed last night though, playing with 2.44 that I downloaded (haven't tried compiling it myself) that on my origin 2400, if I start it using 8 threads, when the job first starts, it uses 8 processors, but after the first tile of the matrix finishes, that processor never gets another job, so the majority of the render runs with only 7 processors. Is this a known issue or just normal (but odd, IMHO) behavior?

Shouldn't this belong in the for sale section?

Though to me, IRIX is half the fun of playing with SGI stuff. If I want to use linux I have plenty of much faster pc's to run it on.

One thing I see of note though. You might want to take 512mb out of M1 N1 and M1 N4 and put them in M1 N3, that will give you a least 1GB in every node. As it sits, M1 N3 only has 256mb.

I've queued several molecular dynamics jobs already, so the computer is busy atm. I will mostly use it for offline signal processing and molecular dynamics.

Wow. One that gets put to real use. Kinda makes me feel bad. My 2400 only gets run on weekends doing blender rendering. Other than that it's just a lamp.

I paid about $400 for mine, and had to drive 6 hours one way to get it and I don't have a 'real' use for it. :D Collectors collect all kinds of things. Kinda wish i'd waited though, since there was an o2k offered here for free about a week ago, and it would have been about the same travel time for me to get as with the one I paid for.

Going by the only crossplatform benchmarks I know of personally (blender test render times,) my 16x r12k 400mhz 2400 does the equivalent amount of rendering work as 2 athlon 64 X2 3600+'s, and they'd generate a lot less heat and not require 30amps at 220v either. So for me it was a choice between the 'cool factor' vs higher efficiency. Luckily cool won. :D If I was dealing with software that only ran on IRIX, or on the other end, x86, without extensive modification, then those would have effected my decision either way as well. But since I love SGI gear, and blender runs on almost anything, cool won.

Even if it does work. SMD rework is not for the feint of heart. I freakin hate doing it even though it's part of the job.

I'm listing this here instead of the for sale section because i'm not actually ready to sell it yet.

I've decided to consolidate my hobbies, and while rearranging the house, I realize I never really use any of my SGI stuff.. for anything, other than one of the VW320's so the whole lot will eventually show up for sale as I go through it and get the machines cleaned off and fresh copies of 6.5.30 installed.

I might hang on to my o2 and a 1600sw, but the rest will be leaving, either to buyers or to the scrapyard.

My dilemma is though, what to do with my origin 2400. Which is why i'm asking here. If I sell it whole. I will NOT ship it. It will be local pickup only or the buyer will have to otherwise arrange their own freight/shipping. I'll help get it out of my house and help load it but that's it.

So here's my real question. Am I better off listing it whole, or parting the thing out? I honestly wouldn't mind hanging on to the rack. It is a really nice cabinet after all. But if it'll go for more whole, that's the route i'll go. I originally got it to be part of a render farm but these days some of my companies customers are throwing away machines that.. how shall I say it.. are a lot more green? On the other hand, since it lived in my living room, I can attest that it makes a wonderful.. but a bit loud.. heater, during the winter.

An old hinv can be found for it here
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=15701
but that's not really current. It has an IO6G now, and has the octane video card mod done, and I think I got it up to 2Gb per node on the ram. It's been so long since i've messed with it now I can't remember if I got the 16th cpu issue worked out or not. I'll know when I roll it back in range of a 220v outlet and fire it up and reinstall irix. I'll post a complete hinv then when i'm ready to try and sell it.

Forgot to add the MMSC has been modified as well. I got tired of replacing the power supply in as it kept overheating them so the last time I did I added a couple of internal fans. It hasn't died since, and this modification isn't outwardly visible but it's something to note since my mmsc makes a whirring sound now instead of being silent.

To resurrect this thread again. I played with this a bit a couple of days ago trying to figure out if I could reverse the UV damage to my o2 i'm selling, so I experimented with the broken cdrom bezel off my parts o2.

I unfortunately didn't take any pics, but what it boils down to is that I don't recommend using this on dark colored plastics. While it was working and did get rid of the yellow, the lightening was towards the white (I.E.. bleaching) rather than back to the bright blue the o2 was originally(after almost a 2 hour soak). I don't know if this is from UV bleaching from age, or if it was the retrobright mixture responsible.

I also tried a normal beige pc case blank that was almost brown, and it turned it a nice white again(after an 8 hour soak). So I think the lighter the original color the plastic was, the better the results that can be had since the bleaching is less noticeable.

The mix I was using was pretty mild as well. 1.5 - 2% hydrogen peroxide, so I don't think the bleaching result was due to too strong of a mix.

Just figured i'd share my findings.
