nice machine and welcome to the 2k club :) Where did it come from and what do you plan to use it for?

One thing I see of note though. You might want to take 512mb out of M1 N1 and M1 N4 and put them in M1 N3, that will give you a least 1GB in every node. As it sits, M1 N3 only has 256mb.

Danke schön :) ! I bought the Origin on ebay.de and if I'm not wrong it belonged to Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (the hostname was something.blah.blah.fhg.de). I've queued several molecular dynamics jobs already, so the computer is busy atm. I will mostly use it for offline signal processing and molecular dynamics.

I know, but right now I don't have much time to remove the nodes from the lower brick and swap DIMMs. It has certain impact on the calculations that run on M1N3 so I'll fix this soon.

Wow. One that gets put to real use. Kinda makes me feel bad. My 2400 only gets run on weekends doing blender rendering. Other than that it's just a lamp.

Origins are not exactly collectibles and I'm following that simple rule. I wouldn't have bought it hadn't I had a purpose for the machine. I paid less than a thousand € for it and I was able to push it over the 6Gflops limit (with certain code optimisations). Had I gone for a PC (Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron), I would have paid much more than a few hundred €'s and I would have had to port the code to x86/x64 and tested it for correctness (which is painfully slow operation). Besides I can always buy a second rack and connect it to the system I've gotten already if I need horsepower (I happen to have a few spare NUMAlink cables handy). Simple rule of thumb, isn't it :) .

I paid about $400 for mine, and had to drive 6 hours one way to get it and I don't have a 'real' use for it. :D Collectors collect all kinds of things. Kinda wish i'd waited though, since there was an o2k offered here for free about a week ago, and it would have been about the same travel time for me to get as with the one I paid for.

Going by the only crossplatform benchmarks I know of personally (blender test render times,) my 16x r12k 400mhz 2400 does the equivalent amount of rendering work as 2 athlon 64 X2 3600+'s, and they'd generate a lot less heat and not require 30amps at 220v either. So for me it was a choice between the 'cool factor' vs higher efficiency. Luckily cool won. :D If I was dealing with software that only ran on IRIX, or on the other end, x86, without extensive modification, then those would have effected my decision either way as well. But since I love SGI gear, and blender runs on almost anything, cool won.

The O2Ks are very scalable (certainly up to 32 proc with ease) but they are VERY thirsty, large & loud and because of the age things will go wrong!

You should keep your eyes peeled for a O3K system, (more than) twice the power in the same rack size and systems do turn up for less than 2K euros...
