Hi - for the console at the rear of the Fuel I use 9600,n,8,1 connected to the serial #1 port and use a null modem cable.
Joerg is right that the other O3xxx family members use 38400 baud.
The keyboard/mouse removed should get you to a console menu

Hi - you say the light bar flashes red a bit then goes solid white - I would just double check all is OK with your PCee terminal - have you got the terminal 'ONLINE' and in the right serial port at the back of the PCee?
It is a null modem cable and 9600,n,8,1 you need for the serial port 1 connection..I think I agree with Joerg that the L1 is 38400...

BASIC really isn't useful for anything.
It might be better teaching him another interpreted language that has real-world use, like Perl, Python or Ruby.
All of these are available on IRIX. In fact, IRIX ships with Perl (old version, but there anyway).

hmm - I bet the whole generation of programmers brought up in the 80's on Spectrums and BBC's and AppleII would disagree strongly. This core of BASIC programmers has gone on to do a lot.
With a BASIC in ROM you could use the machine out of the box, sure it was limited but BASIC is forgiving and very easy to learn.
BASIC is a useful, easy to learn (and remember) language....

I do remember some MSX machines in the UK but I guess it came at the end of the home computer boom and the standards pushed aside the rest. I guess the Acorn Axxxx/Archimedes machines had a foothold in schools but even they eventually got brushed aside by peecees...
Does anybody remember the Jupiter Ace - it ran FORTH and looked a bit like a ZX80....?
I still have my Archimedes A305, it was the first machine that really made me go WOW... and I could do soooo much with 512K RAM (shared with graphics)...BBC basic was neat - you could mix assembler and basic..

Modern general-purpose scripting languages however do allow you to get 'real' things done quickly and therefore results can be demonstrated quickly.

Basic can get 'real' things done quickly as well!!!! Normally straight from the switch on and beep, not 10 mins to boot, load bloat OS etc etc...The joy of Beeb!

A good grounding in assembler does no harm what so ever! Remember they are more PICs and embedded microcontrolers doing stuff than big PC based stuff with bloated OS..

The O2Ks are very scalable (certainly up to 32 proc with ease) but they are VERY thirsty, large & loud and because of the age things will go wrong!

You should keep your eyes peeled for a O3K system, (more than) twice the power in the same rack size and systems do turn up for less than 2K euros...

OK, best to start with basics.
1. Did it ever work for you or have you just bought it?
2. Best to start moodule at a time so power the system down and remove the numa-link cable and then start the boot process. Capture the full console o/p and we'll take it from their. Also show me the full env from the L1 console before and after power on.
No transformers to replace in O300 - just SMPS and VRMs (OK they have transfomers in them but..)

Also - I'd suggest that a moderator creates a new thread -O300 boot problems as it reflects the topic more accurately.

sometimes you see that a DIMM slot has got filled with crap and dust if it has been in a system with empty banks and then been upgraded.
Whan I have had this issue in the past I strip the board down and clean all the DIMM sockets with a good contact cleaner and wipe the DIMM contacts clean as well.

You may also have duff RAM, it happens...

Did you load the graphics drivers for Irix after you added the ESI?

DON'T use compressed air, all you will do is blow crap deeper into things!

Take the board to a ESD work bench and gently brush out the dust.

I would suggest the following as you are a newbie.
Get a fresh HDD & irix install set and do a complete fresh install - then you can config things as you like it and learn a bit on the way.

(c) To stop 3rd world countries with nuclear ambitions from evading the export restrictions by buying a couple of small systems and merging them into a large configuration. These days, with PC clusters, this argument has become irrelevant.

That is the reason I have seen on documentation - the US still has very strong export controls on certain areas of technology (even limiting some countries limit to Windows 98 based products..)

I believe you can hack a router - have seen some notes regarding this

If anybody has any special requests to look out for or take photos of things I will try to help - sorry - I can't carry/collect anything..
I will be staying in Shinjuku (as always..)

The challenge is that is takes a lot off effort to get to the root of problems - to gather evidence and make a call - I (most) of the people on the board are adults and should be capable of doing their own due dilligence..

It is all about good airflow. Give the unit a lot more space at the back with clean airflow and let the warm air exhaust somewhere and you'll find it won't fastfan.
Think of the unit as a 800w heater - you need to dump the warm air somewhere..

It was the noise that really struck me - like a cross between a roller-disco and industrial printing press...

I have just dusted off my (very) old A310, this was my first big investment in a computer (I paid around £600 for it in 1987), it had an 8MHz 32bit ARM with 512K RAM (it was an A305 originally).
It has had several other upgrades over the years but has been boxed up and untouched since ~2000.
It was very dusty inside and the two 1.5V AA cells had leaked and corroded the battery box but after a good dust blast and clean up it looked good. Sadly it didn't start - the PSU buzzed at switch on - this was traced to a shorted tant. cap in the 12V rail.. So now I am back to the joys of programming in BBC basic with in line ARM code :)

I always liked the Acorn machines and I will try to get a BBC model B and also get my A5000 running as well....

Did you buy it in the US? They sold many A3xxx into schools in the UK in the late 80s and early 90s but eventually the PCs won that battle! It the mid 90s nearly every school sold off their A3xxxs so most turning up on ebay have school markings..
