SGI: Discussion

Timewaster: SGI haiku

For some reason (probably connected with writing a "haiku" error message for a web thing I was doing yesterday) my mind drifted to the old O2 Haiku page which, as it points out, is not in fact haiku (neither really was my error message, but I did draw in nature).

So, what about real haiku about SGIs? I'll start with a bad example:

In the cold winter
Onyx purrs, an outsize cat
House warm, program built.

Anyone else up?
"Brakes??? What Brakes???"

Ok here is one:

In the hot summer
Onyx warm, outside storm
Too bad, house will burn
Nice looking machine
Hey can i install linux
As if you'd want to

What happened to them
Linux makes my stomach turn
I'll buy something else

Oh no sgi!
What has happened to you guys?
Linux is just hype

Logo now makes sense
Servile, gutless, insipid
it sure can't get worse

but it did...

My memory faults,
Fuel burnt out,
The kernel enjoys.

BTW, I just recalled that about 30 years ago I'd prefaced a book review with a paraphrase of a Laotse poem in which I'd replaced a 3-letter word by other 3 letters:

When the superior man hears of APL,
he practises it.
When the ordinary man hears of APL,
he ignores it.
When the inferior man hears of APL,
he laughs at it.
If it where not laughed at,
it would not be true APL.

[Of course, you all know what the original 3-letter word is] :-)

To accentuate the special identity of the IRIS 4D/70, Silicon Graphics' designers selected a new color palette. The machine's coating blends dark grey, raspberry and beige colors into a pleasing harmony. ( IRIS 4D/70 Superworkstation Technical Report )
More nature! More seasons! More measured expositions of how ElectroPaint reminds you of autumn leaves in a windstorm!

Good show so far.

electrons flashing
square leaves twirl, edges alight
oops I bumped the mouse
Google: Don't Be Evil. Apple: Don't Be Greedy. Microsoft: Don't Be Stupid.
I was bored, so I made another one.

This one is even worse:

The autumn night was windy,
When I met Cindy
Bitch was only interested of my Indy

Bought myself a Fuel,
Now life is much less cruel.
Ladies and gentlemen, a masterpiece! Great work

If he would have known about it, Lao, in his eternal wisdom, surely would have marvelled at it. Alas, the original word is much more mundane. Just try again...

PS: Replacing "APL" by "SGI" actually makes some sense as well... :)

All deamons sleep,
Fuel blinks red,
Another cold vodka.

The story of my SGI's in haiku:

Restore this old tape
It's 8 years old. What system?
It was SGI

Dragged out from old stores
A blue Octane is revived
But fails to boot up

I look for web help
I find Neko friendliness
Rackable spends big

The tape does not have
The data that was wanted
The Octane re-stored

Out in the scrap pile
My curiosity peaked
I must salvage them

From rain, wind and snow
They have risen like Phoenix
To impress again

All SGI scrapped
I give them all a good home
And see what will work

IRIX install done
The rusty machine are on
I must install Quake

No more beige boxes
Legendary machine is on
Welcome back to class

!m!
Doing that Lone Wolf thing. Without the ninja killing and revenge.

Mac Book Pro 13" Running Lion.
All SGI's now in the hands of people that will use them more.
