Everything Else

What we* do for a living... - Page 3

Hi, my name is Yves, I was born in 1971 (may 13th to be precise) and I'm a sys admin and webmaster. I studied electronics but always was way more capable in front of a computer. That's why I'm one of those lucky people that turned a hobby into a (paying) profession.

My computers where: Sinclair ZX-81, Atari 800XL, Amiga 500, Amiga 500+, Amiga 1200, CD32, Toshiba Satellite laptop (first peecee) and after that only (and many) self-built PC's. About two years ago, I started to lurk e-bay for SGI equipment.

But my biggest passion is martial arts. Started out 19 years ago in Taekwondo, then Hapkido, some kickboxing and Win-Tsung and since a couple of years I've been practicing Escrima (first Sinco-Tero but now IKAEF). My main motivation is self-defence (not competition) so that's the reason for the exotic cocktail of fighting systems (each has its pros and cons).

In the weekend, I pop off a few rounds at the gun range. I'm an avid Glock-fan and also love shooting modern military carbines and SMG's. Besides my Glock 19C, I owned a Bushmaster XM15E2S Commando (AR-15 .223REM 10" HBAR with telescopic stock) but recently sold it to get a Steyr AUG A3. But I digress.

I like music, especially the Blues. Oh yeah, and 80's like late Pink Floyd, The Police, Guns 'n Roses, Metallice, Peter Gabriel, Rolling Stones, Simple Minds, Talking Heads and the likes.

Oh man, I forgot to mention AC DC!

Just gimme some REAL music made by REAL people that can play REAL instruments (not paint notes with a mouse in CuBase and even then fuck it up). Everybody, make a mental note of this:

* Good music does NOT need a fast changing videoclip with girls shaking their ass in ya face, aiiiiright? If I wanna see tits, I hit the tittybar, geddit? Just play the friggin' guitar and shut the f*ck up or take your BLING BLING somewhere else, oo'kay???

Whit these words, I salute you.

Then, are you meanning these weird frog, displacing him as if he were on an invisible motorcycle, singing all the time "BLING...BLING-BLING-BLING-BLING-BLING...BLING...BLING-BLING-BLING-BLING-BLING...BLING..." (and so on...), while he's doing all kind of weird faces???

...Nop; I have not seen it! :D

Interesting mix i'm a Taekwondoka myself :)
Escrima basically filipino fighting system with a high emphasis on stick fighting as well right?

Yes, single stick or double stick as well as daga (knive fighting) with heavy influences from Kali. From what I've learned (I'm NOT claiming to be an expert on martial arts history - I'm more into practicing it, so feel free to correct me), the Chinese Win-Tsung system also incorporates stickfighting techniques from Escrima. Also, Escrima and WT are both based on a system of triangular foot-movement.
I am a computer programmer that is currently developing ColdFusion (and Visual Basic) applications for company intranets and medical database systems.

I currently have two SGI systems – a 320 VWS and a Indy that was recently acquired and I have yet to run a hinv on it.
Well, my name is indeed Oskar and the "45" is a hint to my age - no, I'm not 45 but I was born in '45 :P

As for my job, I'm SrSysAdmin at the headquarters of a quite well-known international organization over here in Vienna/Austria [any others on nekochan from Vienna?]; unfortunately, I've to manage only Windows and non-SGI based Linux as we don't have any SGI stuff at all. Nevertheless, I earn enough money to afford buying SGI boxes privately (I got my first Indigo in '93, and right now I've an Indigo2 and a Fuel).

As for my "hobbies" - I like to tent out in the African bush [with the exception of Burindi and Namibia, I have been everywhere in East-/Southern Africa from Kenya to Mozambique but I plan on Namibia next Fall, and in April I'll be off to watch the Great Migration], I like to undertake bicycle tours with my lady [in Europe and New Zealand], I collect life performances of operas and I enjoy photographing with my Nikon F5's; and yes, I read a lot (like Pickover, Smullyan, Penrose)...

With Bling Bling I was refering to the whore-mentality, so common in the entertainment-industry.

But your Frog remark is right on the spot: as it happens, the provider that sells the Crazy Frog ringtones for a company called Jamba, has just been fined 40,000 UK Pounds by ICSTS, for misinformation of its clients (stupid shallow kids who actually like the crap that's produced from that retard frog).

Shows you just what the entertainment-industry is all about... Bling Bling...

My name's Matthew, I'm 26, and I'm a sysadmin for an old bank (founded in 1875) in Trinidad, Colorado, USA. I mostly admin Windows Server 2003 but also some Linux (Debian) and FreeBSD.

I'm also a computer consultant in my off-time, doing anything from eradicating malware to teaching people how to sell stuff on eBay.

I play keyboards (Roland Juno-D currently) and collect and sell old hardware. I've had quite a few SGIs but all I have at the moment are a VW320, a Zx10, an Indigo2-HI, an Octane, and a POWER Challenge L. Also a bunch of Suns, a couple of old Macs, and tons of other random stuff.

Married, 1 kid (Kevin, 18 months old), two cats, one dog.

For a bit of trivia, I live in the so-called "Sex change capital of the world."
I'm Joe, I'm 19, and I am an alcoholic.

Err, shit. Uh.... I mean, I'm a Java Programmer.

...I get those two things confused a lot :?

My real name is Nick and I am rapidly approaching thirty. My wife is called Nicola and on Sunday we celebrated our first wedding anniversary :D

I work as an information security consultant through my own company which I set up about 18 months ago after spending many years at the UK Ministry of Defence. Am currently contracted to a large US insurance firm working on UNIX hardening, SOX/HIPPA/FSA/DPA compliance, general incident response and risk assessment work.

I'm doing a part-time MSc in Information Security at the Royal Holloway and am due to graduate next year. After that I'd like to study Modern Arabic (recent holiday to Jordan made me fall in love with the language). My interests are archery, heavy metal, anime and I love old UNIX kit (esp SGI/SUN). I've been working with UNIX systems for about 12 years.

Nice to meet you all.

Nick

I'm a jaded ol' fart and also a lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney. In the good old days, I used to lecture courses in real-time operating systems, microprocessors, programming languages, etc., but these days I'm obliged to wade though huge amounts of paperwork (applications for exemptions, changes of course/major, appeals against assessment grades, etc.) and it's bloody soul-destroying.
In my office I have my Octane, Iris Indigo, Indigo2 and O2 (all bought using my own money) and it pisses me off that I don't get the time to tool around with them any more.
Maybe when I've finished marking these exams ....

Dude, you gotta be one of the coolest lecturers I've heard of.

All that SGI equipment in your office! Way cool. :D

I wish my Deakin lecturers had your passion, then maybe they can have something in common with me and meet me on middle ground.

But, I guess that's too much to ask.

Good luck marking exams, as a student, I dread the wait between sitting the exam, and getting the results. Be gentle to those lost souls, and throw in the extra mark, God knows getting a graduate job in this country is hard enough. ;)

Cheers,

Phil.

Hi,

Born in '77, I'm now working in the aerospace industry since the last 4 years as a lead software architect for cockpit display systems.

I first discovered SGI in 2001 during my internship at Kasenna (Mountain View, CA) which was a subsidiary of SGI.

I used to be a unix addict since 1995 with slackware and redhat linux and rapidly switch to FreeBSD 2.1 in 1996 (while one of my neighboor made me discover NetBSD and OpenBSD). I stayed faithfull with FreeBSD until 2002. I then switch to NetBSD. I'm now under XP with my both laptops (home and work) and as a deeply unix addicted I need to freshen my head with a real unix desktop.

That's why I'm planning to buy a Fuel or a Dual Octane 2. Pleasure only.

Cheers,
Pierre-Jean.
