What we* do for a living... - Page 4

Hi!!
Well, born in february '74, real name Dimitris.
I have studied archaeology in the university of Athens and now I work on a restoration project of hellenistic period greek antiquities at the island of Kos, somewhere in Aegean (eastern mediterranean) sea, with the Hellenic (Greek) ministry of culture...
Heavily intersted in computing since my childhood, my first contact with computers was in 1984 with a C=64 of a friend, then in 1985 with a Sinclair ZX Spectrum of my own and from 1988 and on with C= Amiga! Nowadays I have a retro-computer collection of some 110 machines, mostly 8 and 16 bit!
Always admired UNIX based machines (mostly Sun and SGI), but never could afford one to try out! Now, thanks to e-auctions, I bought some dirt-cheap, second-hand UNIX boxes (Sun U10 & U60, SGI I2) and started learning a couple of things... Kind of hard to learn, but quite interesting machines and OSes ;) Not very much time for my various computer courses and projects, though...
Hey, forgot to write about my friend dir_marillion here, who joined nekochan recently, just like me! He persuaded me to get my SGI I2 and I persuaded him to get his Sun U5 and U60!! :D We both exchange opinions and suggestions about Irix and Solaris, and of course about Amiga and other older OSes and machines... I leave the rest for him to write down... :)

Yiassou Dimitri.

110 machine collection! Man, that's what I call hard core.

Keep up the collecting mate. Good to see another greek on Nekochan. 8)

Geia sou Spidy!
I never expected to find another greek person in here, except of dir_marillion, this is a nice surprise!! :D
Hey, thanks for your kind words, I will surely keep on collecting! I have some greek oriented (from Samos island) relatives in Australia, hehe!
My greetings to Melbourne from the sunny Aegean sea :) :)

Whoa!

I cannot believe this thread is still going...

When I originally started it, there were only about 200 users or less. I'm sure that people that posted early on have possibly found new jobs or moved uppper that ladder a bit.

I personally had to make a major change and went back to school. I think I might have figured out what I want to be when I grow up...

Heh. It's an oldie but a goody.

What I can't believe is that there's someone else from Kitsap County on here.

I'm easing into retirement, myself. I started fooling with computers when they still had vacuum tubes, and have been at it, on and off, ever since.

Before I got involved with computers, I was a recording artist, a commodities trader, worked in retail, did quality control, built racing cars, and a number of other things. When I was "off" computers, I was a general contractor, construction management consultant, photographer, and probably some other things I've forgotten.

Most of my computer "on" time has been programming; I've worked in 25 languages on 9 operating systems.

I've given industrial training classes to a couple of thousand students, been a guest lecturer at a couple of major universities, and written parts of three computer books.

My specialty isn't knowing things; it's figuring things out.

From the Dusting Off Really Old But Interesting Threads Department I'll add my infodata: My real name is Chris, my college degree is in physics, my current employment is "staff scientist" at the world's third largest defense contractor (based on applicable 2011 revenues), I am co-holder of five patents, all work related and utterly useless except as "prior art" refutation of possible future patents, and I have a whole shitload of computers the crown jewel of which is my maxed out Octane2... :P

There, I tried to keep it short!

Anyone? Anyone? Buhler? Buhler?

Well, it was only a seven-year gap in the thread (2006-2013) ... when you consider the age of some of the machines we talk about, it's nothing.

As a small update since my last (2006) posting in this thread ... I've fully retired, spent some time living in France, passed all my Suns and my Tandem-badged Challenge L on to other collectors, and moved to a house that's less amenable to having lots of computers. So, I'm spending less time fooling with computers and more time doing other stuff. I'm still in the game, but lightly.
