The collected works of kokkiklhs

Hi!!
Well, born in february '74, real name Dimitris.
I have studied archaeology in the university of Athens and now I work on a restoration project of hellenistic period greek antiquities at the island of Kos, somewhere in Aegean (eastern mediterranean) sea, with the Hellenic (Greek) ministry of culture...
Heavily intersted in computing since my childhood, my first contact with computers was in 1984 with a C=64 of a friend, then in 1985 with a Sinclair ZX Spectrum of my own and from 1988 and on with C= Amiga! Nowadays I have a retro-computer collection of some 110 machines, mostly 8 and 16 bit!
Always admired UNIX based machines (mostly Sun and SGI), but never could afford one to try out! Now, thanks to e-auctions, I bought some dirt-cheap, second-hand UNIX boxes (Sun U10 & U60, SGI I2) and started learning a couple of things... Kind of hard to learn, but quite interesting machines and OSes ;) Not very much time for my various computer courses and projects, though...
Hey, forgot to write about my friend dir_marillion here, who joined nekochan recently, just like me! He persuaded me to get my SGI I2 and I persuaded him to get his Sun U5 and U60!! :D We both exchange opinions and suggestions about Irix and Solaris, and of course about Amiga and other older OSes and machines... I leave the rest for him to write down... :)

Yiassou Dimitri.

110 machine collection! Man, that's what I call hard core.

Keep up the collecting mate. Good to see another greek on Nekochan. 8)

Geia sou Spidy!
I never expected to find another greek person in here, except of dir_marillion, this is a nice surprise!! :D
Hey, thanks for your kind words, I will surely keep on collecting! I have some greek oriented (from Samos island) relatives in Australia, hehe!
My greetings to Melbourne from the sunny Aegean sea :) :)

If not then you should be able to get this firmware from Sun. Pending mod approval I can also post a link to a public webserver that offers this patch.

Great stuff!!! Since I got my hands on a Mac Radeon 7k, I would like to do the trick! Could you please point me to the exact file with the 1.61 firmware from Sun? Their pages are a bit chaotic and I always get confused... :)
Another thing: Is all this worth the try? I have two U10s and a U60 that run Sol8, 9 and 11 respectively! I've read (older) threads about the XVR100 being dead slow, even for the desktop refresh etc. with the Ultras! Is this a matter of HW, or just lousy drivers from Sun? I suspect the second case, since I've seen a lot of patches for Solaris/XVR100 hanging around...
@saq:
Yes, I totally agree with you! Anyone who has an SGI machine, never needs a Sun box, in matter of graphics ;)
But I just like "transplant surgery" HW operations VERY much and this is a very good occasion for me having a cheap XVR100, just for the experience! The most probable thing is to get disappointed of its performance stick back to Creator3D after a while, but need to see it first :D
Another thing is, that I still cannot admit that Sun Ultras, which are very good machines in general, can't have a basic contemporary video performance of even a poor and humble 6-7 years old PeeCee..
If I could just find the 1.61 firmware file from Sun...
:) :):)
Thanks!!!
I'll be back with my impressions, as soon as I find the time for the experiment and some testing ;)
Hey, this portable C64 avatar piccy rocks!!! 8)
Now, let's all pray to the Nekoware-involved gurus to make your (mine, too) wish come true!
Please, pleeeease!!!
