Hello,

Probably IRIX 101 but I'm stuck.

I have downloaded the 6.5.22 overlays from SGI , how do I now install them over the top of my 6.5.15 installation ? I tried just pointing Software manager at them, but it comes up with a large list of conflicts .. most are about dev stuff which I don't care about yet, but some are about "incompatible" warnings and it asks me to remove things like the Tool chest etc.

Also if I wanted to do a boot from the tar files from SGI .. how ? Do I just burn them to CD ?

Thanks!

Mark

Ahh .. the patch did the trick :-)

Thanks!

Hi there,

If hardware was faulty in an O2 (say ECC errors in memory), where do those errors get logged to ?

Thanks

There is a chap here in NZ who I think has 3 R5200 300Mhz machines, think he lurks here as well ... want me to ask if he'd part with some ? I think he wants a 600mhz upgrade himself as well.

Hi there,

As my fuel has a DDS-4 drive on it I'd quite like to get it to backup the machines on my network (OSX).

Is there a nice GUI driven backup applciation I could use ? Anything in Nekoware or IRIX native ? And that's free! :-)

Thanks

neko_bacula-2.4.3.tardist is available in /beta.
Please note that the QT4 and the Gnome gui are not installed by default (because of the heavy dependencies). They can be found in the neko_bacula.opt.bat and neko_bacula.opt.bgnome_console subsystems.

Thanks! As soon as I get some DAT tapes I'm going to try Bacula and Amanda out.

So when will the IRIX version be put up as news on the Blender site ?
How will the world know of the superhuman efforts you've put into it ?
And how will the world be turned green with envy as ye-olde SGI boxes chew through 64 threads ? ;)

Mark
:Fuel:
I got around to downloading this blender version .. and it just core dumps on me :-(

Got a Fuel V10, 1gb ram and IRIX 6.5.29

I don;t have Python setup yet, but would that make a difference ?

Also what else should be installed to make it run ? There a list somewhere ?

Thanks

Mark
:Fuel:
Sounds good to me ... but where would a person find the IRIX portage stuff ? Your website has a link to "View Gentoo Tools", but that just gives a 404 error message :-(

Hi there,

Unfortunately my PC only has 32bit 5Volt PCI slots so my LSI SAS board does not physically fit as it is a 3.3Volt board and the keying is different. :-(
(I think I'll see about getting another cheap PC motherboard and enabling the "removable media" option via that)

And also, if I have the firmware image from LSI, can I use the "lsflash" utility in IRIX to do the upgrade ?

Mark
:Fuel:
Did you zero out the disk as well ?

Maybe there is some left over Linux fluff in the areas where IRIX boots from ?
:Fuel:
I think "Nope!" is the easy answer to this question :-)

I don't think the O2 can even output 1920x1080 as a screen resolution either!
Plus to play 1080p you would either have to decode a compressed video format which the O2 is not grunty enough to do or play back uncompressed .. which it can't do either.

I only a dual-CPU R16K O2 had been made :-)

Does virtualbox have any tools to go through a VMware image and correct any driver discrepancies ? I assume X is trying to start up the VMware X driver and failing cause it might not be compatible enough.

I converted the DINA image to a Parallels guest with not much fuss ... but since made my own Dina-a-like setup on a MIPs based Qube2 which can boot IRIX easily enough. Not as fancy but getting there :-)

Sorry, if this is out topic, but: -can a Qube2 boot/run IRIX? This is new to me, and I'm curious. All the best,
Diego

Doh! Sorry, I wrote that line a bit wrong .. I meant to say "but since made my own Dina-alike setup based on a MIPs based Qube2 which SGI machines can net-boot from."

Makes more sense like that ... would be nice if it was possible for IRIX to install on it :-)

Hi there,

I've an old LC II macintosh that had a dead hard disk .. I've not replaced said dead disk (with a gigantic 2.1GB drive .. oh my god the power!!!!)

I want to get System 7.5.3 onto that disk .. how ?

The only tools I have to me are :

SGI Fuel (no floppy drive, but can mount the Macintosh SCSI disk)
Mac Mini running OSX (no floppy drive and no SCSI)
Linux PC (with a floppy drive)
Macintosh LC II with a SCSI hard disk and a floppy drive .... no OS.

So far I've managed to create a boot floppy from a disk image file and dd'ing it to a floppy using the Linux PC.
I've also copied all the System 7.5.3 files from the Apple site (they have released them as "free") onto the SCSI disk by plugging it into the Fuel and mounting the disk up.
If I then boot the Macintosh I can;t double click the self extracting System7.5.3 image .. I guess because the metadata about the file has been lost in the copy process ? It just says "WTF is that ?" ... basically.

Anyone know how to get around this ?

If I could find some System 7 floppy disks in an image format (ala rawwrite or dd) I could just write them back to real floppies ... but Apple have not made it easy!!

Mark
:Fuel:
The files are these :

http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Su ... ion_7.5.3/

All the files are .bin ... if I run "mcvert" against them while I have the SCSI disk mounted on the Fuel .. will it allow them to be doubleclickable when the disk is put back in the Mac ?

Thanks

Mark
:Fuel:
And that's the issue I have ... don't have anyone with a Mac that is the same vintage or like me they have an OSX machine with no floppy drive :-(

I even resorted to googleing to see if I could find a website that already has them as disk images .. not much luck their either, just some other people in the same boat as me.

Hi there,

I've a firewire board in my Fuel .. how do I make use of it ?

I want to both import and export video via it .. but I don't know what commands under IRIX would do that.

Any pointers ... I quite happily RTFM if I know which manual to read :-)

Thanks

some help here would be greatly appreciated

Hi have you tried the silly things first ?

1) Can the Virtual box hosted Dina be contacted by another computer on the LAN ?
If you have no other machine other than the SGI, can dina ping out to http://www.google.com ?

2) You''ve configured dina with an IP address yes ?

3) And turned off your existing DHCP server .. probably installed in your internet router ? (Dina is a DHCP server as well and you can't have 2 on the same LAN, and I think this is your problem)

4) Have you read : http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/netboot.html
a huge mine of information!

Assuming your dina guest can get out onto the LAN and you're sure people on the LAN can talk to it and any other DHCP server on the LAN is switched off, try :

1) Enter Maintenance and get to the Command monitor
2) Enter : setenv netaddr <IPaddressyouwantyourINDY2tohave>
3) Enter : boot -f bootp()<IPaddressofDina>:/irix/6.5/1/stand/fx.ARCS --x
That will hopefully get you to the disk partitioning phase
4) Exit out once you have done any disk stuff
5) Enter Maintenace and get to Command monitor
6) Click 2. Install System Software
7) Enter the IP address of the dina box as the Remote host
8 ) Enter "/irix/6.5/1/dist" as the remote directory
9) click the enter/go button :-)

Does that do anything ? You can always jump straight to step 5 if you don;t want to repartition the disk.

And also read : http://se.mirror.nekoware.net/SGI_relat ... ation.html
I used a combination fo that page and Ians site to learn how to do it.

Good luck!

Hiya,

Movie Maker will do the job but it is rather basic, Adobe Premier would be much better but the version available for IRIX is old, that said there are some SGI O2 plugins for Premier that allow the use of the ICE I think, making things a lot smoother.

If you just want to dabble then an O2 with the Audio/Video option would be easily obtained for very little money, it has the SVHS in/out and can also do Firewire with an added DM10 (or board that has the same chipset as the DM10) .. sometimes .. firewire is flakey from what I've heard and the camera support is limited :-(

SGi reads in jpeg just fine, the O2 is actually a rather good machine for that since the ICE handles jpeg and motion jpeg in hardware (within limits)

Series of pictures to video conversion .. not a problem think the built in tools will do that but there is also mencode

You can get a range of digital video options for SGIs, most are aimed at the high end though (SDI input/output etc) but some are analog.
Firewire is available (DM10 or compatible) .. but support is limited.

Another software option might be "LiVES", looks pretty on the website .. just needs a compile+fix for IRIX which may or may not be easy.

Your biggest constraint is CPU power .. modern intel Core 2 Duo CPUs would encode the video MUCH faster than an O2, Octane or Fuel could ... unless you want to go for a big multi-CPU monster SGI :-)

Also make sure you have LOTs of FAST disk, which in the SGI world means SCSI or SAS/SATA if you have a Fuel or Tezro with a LSI SAS controller installed.

Try things out with an O2 see how it goes :-)

From what I read on the above posts, I understood there is a Video Editor Software included with the standard IRIX installation. Correct me pls if I am wrong as I never touched an SGI workstation before, mainly due to prices ;)
I read also somewhere that an early version of Adobe Premiere can be used on IRIX, how it compares with the one mentioned before?
I have an older Sony VX2000 MiniDV camera, with standard, s-vhs and firewire connectors. I want to know how I can use it with a SGI? I want to transfer some tapes I have in miniDV and edit them then output them on VHS or save them in some compressed format on the HDD.
Are there SVHS in-out possible from the O2 with the standard hardware or you have to buy an extra card? What about the Octane, I understood Personal Video option is an extra card, but what kind of video in and out allows?
What is the quality of the video capture files? Do you experience dropped frames with SGI capture like I use to on PC's?
Can those machines read jpg files from PC's or is a different format.
Can O2 or Octane render a series of TGA, JPG or TIF frames to an avi file, or mpeg?
And the higher digital options I guess do not support modern firewire, no?
Also, what are the prices for those video boards, if they are not integrated in the original system?
:Fuel:
Really they used a different board ? Never knew that! What an efficient use of resources .. oh wait!

which one works best ? :-)

oooh sudden thought ... I'm thinking Dina might only netboot a server that it has seen broadcast it's MAC address out onto the LAN in a request to get an IP (from Dina), and that the TFTP session might get tied to that MAC address/IP address.

So try this ....

1) Disable DHCP on your home router
2) Do not assign an IP address to your indigo ... "unsetenv netaddr" ... or maybe clear things completely and resetenv ?
3) Then try : boot -f bootp()<IPaddressofDina>:/irix/6.5/1/stand/fx.ARCS --x
See if the fx program gets loaded.
