Anyone know if you can transfer the NIC from an octane into a Fuel?

Just wondering how the O2 (AV-1) video quality would compare to a Miro (Pinnacle) DC-30 board on a wintel machine, specifically image quality during capture and printing to tape. I used to use the DC-30 with Premier 5.0 and was reasonally satisfied with the performance and quality for what I was using it for. Below is a comparison of the my old wintel system and my O2 that I dont have setup yet. Can anyone provide their opinion on how the two machines may compare in performance? Just wondering if I sould look at upgrading to the digital video option.

Miro DC-30 Machine
Win NT4.0, SP2
Dual P2 350mhz
512 mb ram
single IDE hard drive UDMA-66 (6 gig)

O2 R10000 250MHZ
512mb RAM
AV Option (AV-1 analog)
18 gig 10K RPM drive
(6) SGI 4 gig external disk array - Raid 0 for video

Isnt that 35mb/sec burst rate? Right now I have 6 of the PG4 SGI stripped as one volumn that will do uncompressed video without dropping a frame aprox 27mb/sec sustained. Becuase I will be working with compressed video, I shouldnt need anything near that data rate. 12mb/sec sustained should be fine using 3 or 4 of the PG4 drives.

I didnt know that the R10K processor had issues with video. Probably best to upgrade to an R12K 300 mhz as the proc is still somewhat inexpensive compared to going with a 400mhz or RM7K with a new mother board.

You don't need a new mainboard. They are all the same (or close enough for horseshoes.)

I have always thought the RM5200 / RM7000 required a different board than the R10K and R12K. So does this mean I can drop in a RM7000 processor to replace my R10K 200mhz?

The 35mb/sec was a measured rate, not a manufactors spec for burst rate.

The only thing I have against using compressed is that you only get one video stream. I would like to be able to have multiple video streams going at once. Striping 2 of those disks (I'm sorry, I'd post the model, but it isn't convienient for me to look at the drive in question) on 2 busses is just about perfect for that.

Are these 10K or 15K rpm drives? My O2 has a 18gig 10K RPM system drive. I think the PG4 drives are 7200 RPM each.

just the recommendation to not invest a lot into the system if you are hoping to make it useful. it's just way outdated and doesn't play well with recent tools on other platforms. been there, done that and all. it's been 11 years of technological advance since the o2 video and dc30 were considered prosumer level equipment.

I have to admit that the only system I have ever regretted selling is my old Miro DC30 / premier 5.0 system. I found it to be a pretty good for what I was using it for. I have a lot of old super 8 film reels that I would like to transfer edit and add soundtrack. Now that I have the O2 with video, premier and six PG4 SGI RAID It got me think, maybe I can use this as my Premier station (replacing the old) - hoping that it will perform at least a good as my old 300mhz P2 system.

Yes, but you need a couple of parts. The R10/R12 cpu card sits farther off the mainboard so you need different connectors and maybe standoffs. There's an R-5 350 around here for a tad over a hundred $$ but maybe that's too much ?

Btw, you have an R10k-200 ? or 195 mhz ? People have overclocked the r5 is why I ask ... otherwise, you're liable to get people confused between the r5-200 if you call the 195 mhz r10k cpu a 200.

Sorry its an R10K 250 mhz :)

I want to move my 6 drive SCSI Raid to my O2 from my Octane. Is there an quick easy way to do this? like copy a file over that contains the mount info or something to that effect? rather than configuring the drives from scratch? The drives have been optimized to handle uncompressed video.
:O2: :Octane: :1600SW:
I plan on doing everything on the O2. Capture --> Edit ---> print to DVD Recorder or Tape. Any animations or scanned photos would be copied over the network to the O2 or from my Octane. I have no interest in investing anymore $$$ into additional software or PC video compression cards and then trying to get it working in windows. I really liked my WinNT box that had the Miro DC30 & Premier as it was somewhat stable (still suffered some stability issues and limitations) and was fairly easy to use.

Are you using a third party compression plug in or something? Premier will only alow me to use jpeg compression. Or are you just using the built in media tools to capture?

I believe the Irix version was dropped some time ago. I remember checking into that a few years ago.

I had the same problem... You have to open the environment file (cant remember what the file is calles, but when you "save" your desktop colors under preference, you will see the file name (it might be descktop.col - but it was a long time ago). Anyways open that file using a text editor and scroll down. You will see a list of all the parts of the SI interface followed by 3 sets of numbers. These numbers change the colors. VERY IMPORTANT... make sure you save a backup file first, Also what I did is write down the original values in case you want to revert back. I found it a kind of hit&miss.

Once you find this you see its very easy.
:O2: :Octane: :1600SW:
Its the "Desktop.rsrc" file that you want to edit. The 3 groups of 3 digit numbers is the color - 0 0 0 is black and I think 255 255 255 is white. Hope this helps

Not sure if this is normal, but the hard drive on my O2 doesnt stop reading or writing. It sounds like the disc is constantly cashing every 4 seconds. Is this normal? or is there something else going on and if so, can it be stopped.

Hi Guys,

I have a spare 36gig 15K rpm drive that I want to use to replace my 10k root drive on my O2. The question is how can I do this? I cant install a second drive because my O2 is a R10000. I do have the SGI external PG4 drives, however Im not sure if the 36gig disk will be compatible with the 4 gig enclosure.

Any ideas?
:O2: :Octane: :1600SW:
I am thinking of replacing the drive with a 15K drive. Perhaps that may help?
:O2: :Octane: :1600SW:
I have been reading some posts here about sugestion on silencing an O2. Seems like the two most obvious is to do the following;

1. Replace the power supply fan - Are these common?
2. Install modern drive

Can anyone offer sugestion as tot hard drive would be best? The drive I am using now is a Seagate "Cheetah" 18 gig 10K. Anyone know how this drive compares?
:O2: :Octane: :1600SW:
Will this affect any installed applications or network settings? I dont want to have to re-install anything or re-liscense any of my apps or mess around repairing network connections. Can anyone tell me if the risks are low?
:O2: :Octane: :1600SW:
Thanks guys,

What is patch 5086 - where is is available?

So it seems that the risks are pretty low and should not affect my 3D apps that use FlexLM liscencing.

I plan on swapping my root drive for a faster one, so I will perform that first so I have a complete backup of the system disk before I upgrade.
:O2: :Octane: :1600SW:
Silencing the drive is more important to me than the fan. Right now the drive is really anoying. Its like a constant reminder of how slow the machine really is ;) as it sounds like the old x486 computers.

I haven't changed that file yet. I was hoping I could get my command line to work without altering the original file. I tried everything but the "-c $COLOR_FILE" flag is not recognized by the program.
So I guess the only option left is to directly modify the "Desktop.rsrc" file in the /usr/Softimage/Soft3D_4.0/3D/rsrc directory.

Just double click on the file (its just a text file) and have a good look at the right hand column. These are all the differnt parts of the interface for example "button back shadow". The 3 sets of 3 digit number directly to the left is the color for that part of the interface. Just remember to make a copy of the original file first incase you mess things up.. Also I took notes of all changes I made in case I want to "undo" the change. When your finished, just save the file and reopen SI.
:O2: :Octane: :1600SW:
Is it quiet? can you hear the constant "thermal recalibration" thats common on the older 10K drives?
:O2: :Octane: :1600SW:
Just want to confirm, will Ultra320 scsi drives work in a O2?

I followed Ian's step by sstep procedure for cloning a system root disk found on hisFuturetech site, but Im having liitle luck. The problem is when I ge to the xfsdump / restore point after entrting the following;

cd /0
xfsdump -l 0 -p 5 - / | xfsrestore - .

It lists a bunch of options followed by Total time 0 sec's. baically its over in a blink. After numerous attempts, I cant seem to copy all the files. I was successfull copying the volume header without problems.

The disk I am copying is as follows;

Root dsk - 36gig on ID 1 controller 0
"clone"backup dsk - 9 gig on ID 2 controller 0

Am I mising something?? typo??

Dumb question :roll: Where do I enter that? :(

If I enter it in either winterm or xwsh, It returns the following;

IRIS_2 1% echo $MANPATH
MANPATH - Undefined variable
IRIS_2 2%
:O2: :Octane: :1600SW:
I see the download is still available.. but would'nt you need a serial number or licensing key to enter?
