I played on one. If you're not Japanese or don't understand it, its not really worth owning. There's a lot of RPGs, shmups and VNs exclusively for it, but you're dealing with very dialogue driven games.

If I can get a video card to boot in an Altix 350, I may just start working with the NetBSD guys to see if I can get a port going in time for 7.

I use git and fossil, I like them both equally and I prefer both over CVS/SVN. Do I think they are necessarily super good? No, not at all. The main reason I have and use git is to contribute to projects using it. Fossil I use because its the only one that's permissively licensed and does what I need.

Yeah ivelegacy we don't have many Italians on here, so if you're going to find a cheaper frontplane you will pay for the cost in shipping. I sold a chassis on eBay of an Octane 2 for $100, it sold within a day, but because it was the entire chassis, shipping to the EU would have been over $100 USD. You simply pay for the math somewhere along the line.

Still looking, preferably less than $200 USD.

Or, you can always try backporting Open64 to IRIX. Its the same compiler, but different. :p

I've seen them go for less than $200. Its just a question of when they pop up.

I run IRIX on all of my SGI-MIPS boxes. I do not like Linux, one bit, so I do not currently run it where another OS is supported. I use BSD for a daily driver because I heavily prefer to not further GPL encumbered OSes, I will and do use Linux on occasion, but its a relatively rare occurrence for me.

My Octane sees a lot of use, as does my O300.

Lots of various CAD and 3D applications, NGINX etc. I use them like I would any UNIX computer, and I also like to test their security by setting up a throwaway image, hardening it, exposing it, and it alone on my network to the internet and seeing how long it lasts. Thus far the Indy has remained secure, and online, for about 6 weeks.

here i have a copy of maya v5, which is not a CAD, but it is the only 3D application i know for Irix

the purpose of this thread is also to understand what i could eventually run on my Irix box as i really do not know anything about Irix's Applications.

Mostly the old AUTOCAD versions. Pro/E for UNIX is pretty neat from what I hear, I've used Pro/E on Windows before.

Again, I'm mostly a hobbyist. I have a FreeBSD laptop for real work.

I'm looking for an SGI Prism, if you have one for a decent price, so long as the case is in good shape and the system is working, I'd be interested. I have ZERO idea what these go for.

So I got a second O300. Plugged it in and tried to serial into it from the port marked CONSOLE ( I can do this fine on the other O300 I own ). I got the connected message from tip, but L1 isn't responding. Front LCD says L1 running while plugged in.

Hit the power button, and the red light flashes.

I'm kinda stumped as the user guide doesn't seem to have a troubleshooting section - what could be the problem before I start going in and ripping things out?

OpenBSD runs on the O2, and is less of a pain to use than that Loony Loonix

I don't own a NUMALink cable so that's probably not the case. I'm using a FreeBSD host with tip as the serial line, I have it setup correctly in /etc/remote but I'll also try the 9600 baud rate to see if that makes a difference, if ^t doesnt.

I'm not in deep into this system ( was a junkyard find ) so if its a dud I'm not out much at all.

Emulation of IRIX is fruitless guys. Just sit back and enjoy the hardware we have. If you want more, best phone up Rackable and beg them to open source IRIX and the other IP surrounding it.

I could. I'll be working with it tomorrow. I don't use Windows or Linux so using the L3 controller is not really an option - I'm not willing to install Polkit which is needed by VirtualBox to grab a USB port - motherfucking Oracle! It didn't used to be that way, you know?

If you want to start a new petition then share it on Reddit and other sites, I can write up a few paragraphs explaining how it would benefit the Linux, BSD and other communities and why they should care. I'm just not motivated enough to do a petition the right way.

No, we're not using an old petition. We would need a new petition. I can do the writing but someone else has to manage it and find out the best way to contact SGI's management/executives.
