The old tape didn't go with the board I sent you. The old stuff was white on both sides and seemed to be aluminum at its center, hence the orangish tape around the tops of the pin holes used as a safeguard against shorting on the tape. Any heat conductive tape will work.

I apologize for not adding a note with the heatsink

In 97, I bought my first true laptop (previous ones were broken in ways). I was a junior in high school. It was a Toshiba T1850 with a 386sx25, 4MB RAM, 120MB hard disk and a 9.5" VGA greyscale LCD. I got two batteries with it, too. I eventually bought the 8MB RAM card that maxed it to 12MB, more than enough for Windows 3.11.

I used the hell out of that thing and even soldered in a 486slc33 (running at 25MHZ due to clock chip) and wrote the code to turn on the L1 cache, giving the unit three times the performance in 99, but eventually I decided it was time to upgrade and bought a PIII in 2001. The old laptop went by the wayside and was taken apart for some reason. I went to put it together in 2003 and found the connector for the LCD panel was torn. Not gonna happen. Bummer.

I realized I missed using that machine because it was the only such system I've owned where the screen had enough residual light coming off it to light the keyboard for me. I need this feature at night. Newer displays with wide viewing angles don't do that. USB lights don't work because they cast sharp shadows.

A week ago, I was able to score one of these machines from a local shop that did consignment sales on ebay. I tried putting my 486 motherboard in but it was dead. I didn't really need it anyway because Doom was never all that fun without sound, even though it ran perfectly.

So now I have my old lappy back and I'm using it just as heavily as the original. I wish I could find my old RAM card, but for now I have 6MB in this one because it came with a 2MB card inside. And a 2400bps modem. woohoo.

Okay so I've never even touched ASP and all I know is it's kind of like Visual Basic, but my new job in CA is going to involve me in it quite heavily. Since it's an MS thing, I'm sure it's taboo, but is anyone here forced to use it in their daily work life? Cuz I could use some advice as to what book or books to get as boot camp and/or reference.

I've got a little over a week before I have to hit the ground running in OC.

I should have answered that question in my original. Classic ASP to start with. I'll be learning .NET ASP and C# after a while, mostly because my dad is still getting acquainted with it. The Jedi Master needs to know what he's teaching before he can teach it.

I'm ready to learn new stuff and even though I have to learn MS stuff, I'm just glad to be doing tech shit instead of production monkey business.

The MXI losing everything at UXGA thing is what made me decide to fix my 1800FP panel and use that in place of a 2001FP until I score a V12 one day.

1600x1024 does not work on Dell 2001FPs. The controller thinks it's being fed 1280x1024 and won't budge from that.

Frankly, though, the 1800FP is a damn good display as it uses an LG S-IPS panel with 8-bit subpixels and no dithering. 18" SXGA is always better for the eyes than 17" SXGA. 19" SXGA is even better.

Okay, maybe not cry. That's the post-op pain drugs talking--I hope. Autodesk Sketchbook Pro 2010 still rules.

Not since 1997 with AutoCAD LT or 1992 with Animator Pro have I been this overjoyed with a software product.

I was looking for digital canvas apps for my tablet and saw ArtRage and a few others then I saw this with a link to a Youtube video where a guy drew an exquisite looking car. I downloaded the trial and went to work, expecting to have to adapt. No. It was designed to work so eerily naturally. Having never seen it before, I did my homework and looked into the origins of the app and wasn't surprised... it used to be an Alias product.

I'll be honest, I thought about pirating it, but went for a price just for grins. $100. Really? Not for an academic version either? Full version. Wow. I looked at eBay and the usual places to see if there were any discounts to be had. Amazon to the rescue at $20 off. $80 for the package. I'm getting two seats, maybe three.

I use it on a Toshiba Tecra M7 with a C2D T7200 2GHz 4MB L2. Fast machine, good 3D chip, but heavy as hell with short battery life. The app is so gently-priced I'm investing in a customized 3lb Thinkpad X41 Tablet just for this program.

You know you've found a great app when your only regret is not finding it sooner.

Cars? Easy. Another 4th Generation Camaro. This time with the LS1 V8, suspension airbags in back and a hidden hitch.

That car was more like a truck sometimes and I've yet to find another car that can swallow as much gear as that one did.

The photo was taken shortly after arriving back in Utah after spending a couple months in California. There were three Indigo2 systems in that gathering of stuff, carefully positioned between the support beams of that bed frame.

27MPG all the way back, though the V6 wasn't liking the climb out of Death Valley.

27 MPG In a Camaro? Even on flat roads without traffic, that's pretty amazing! Maybe the wind was at your back, and the bedframe was acting as a sail!

Wedge shape, cruise control, GM's excellent 700R4/4L60 automatic transmission and Sequential Fuel Injection. Hold a steady speed and keep your RPMs below 3K to take advantage of American torque-centric engine design.

The 3.4L V6 was just a mutant of the original 2.8L V6. Kinda shitty.

The 3800 Series II 3.8L V6 is incredible in the efficiency department. The 1999 Camaro I owned long before that would net me 31MPG. That one, however, was a 5-speed. When it got backed into and I was given an '01 Dodge Neon to drive during the repairs, I couldn't help laughing at the Neon's barely-30MPG economy. That car had the 3-speed automatic transmission, though. Good for a 0-60 of "yes".

Utah's not your average state. Between major cities, you're usually looking at a thirty mile drive. Look at that space station photo of nighttime lights over the USA and you'll see what I mean. Plenty of cruising space.

ORLY? I wonder how your asking price compares to Ian's? This is tempting.

If I could get a bare CPU (or three) and the SPROM plus whatever else, I could try a conversion with one of my modules and work up a profile for the BGA soldering.

I've learned BGA rework over the past two years and have never had a single bridge. Granted, I use a Teradyne Summit 750 for re-flow so that helps a bit. I inspect with a Photon Dynamics x-ray.

I'm learning re-balling now.

Wouldn't a MAC G4 be quicker in every way?

Or a single garbage Opteron against the G4 for that matter.

That's not really the point.

There are places in town where the turnover rate is insane and the only people willing to wear the nametags are ex-cons, high school kids and college newbies.

These places are of the crooked callcenter bottomfeeder variety. No real business owner associates themselves with the owners of these places or their management for the reason that if word got around, it would tarnish the reputation of the good guys.

Basically, I risk nothing professionally and one middle manager at my target of interest raised my ire due to his unprofessional (entirely racist) treatment of a good friend. It's payback time and I can get paid a little bit in my spare time to make this jerk's life hell with no consequences and bonus street cred.

I've heard stories of the same thing. Anyone here have any tales to tell?

I wonder if a nodeboard can take a Dual Opteron setup? Nah.

The manager got drunk. Loose lips sank ships.

I started an O2 that has been in my alternates pile for some time. It had all the original stuff other than a CPU module I had to swap (was bad).

The rig has an Adaptec 2940UW SCSI card in the PCI slot and looks for an external drive array I didn't get with the machine.

The login screen comes up with Backdraft and Effect as selectable options. No passwords on any of them.

I don't know a single thing about Discreet stuff on SGI hardware so how can I tell what all I've got?

So I guess I'm clear to wipe the drive and reload standard IRIX for resale of the machine, then?

It would seem there's no value in keeping the Discreet software on there in this form.
