I bought a computer rack out that way and the seller was supposed to take it to a local FedEx freight facility so it could be shipped to me out here in Utah.

I'm wondering if I could recruit a board member local to that area to hop the 160lb pallet from the seller's place to the FedEx terminal since the seller isn't being real cooperative about it.

Initially, the guy's truck was out of operation til last Friday. Now, neither I nor Legion Logistics (whom I contracted to do the shipping through FedEx) have been able to get in touch with the seller.

Okay, update. I just heard from Legion that they were able to get in touch with the seller and the rack will be taken to the FedEx terminal tomorrow. I'll keep this post up pending further notice since I may still need help.

Do these machines start up in a console-only mode or something like that? They each have an ATI Radeon PCI card inside, but I get nothing on it.

Each machine has a 1GHz USIIIi, 1GB RAM and a 36GB HDD.

I wish I could go get it. The MI boardset would go straight into my R10K I2, though, while the R4400 would get the SI board and go to a friend.

I didn't know they were hosting another test or I'd have made the drive out to watch. The spectator area is about a mile away from the UUT, but you can still feel the blast at your core. Video does not do it justice, but if you can't be on-site, it's a good substitute.

In BTtF3, Doc and Marty burn out the DeLorean by trying to run it on whiskey. Doc was smart and any redneck can make moonshine. Why not further distill the whiskey into pure (more or less) ethanol and burn that? It would have worked, though the seals on the fuel lines would need replacing in a few years.

WolvesOfTheNight wrote: They attempted straight whiskey first, probably thinking "what could possibly go wrong?" And, if it simply did not work, they probably would have attempted one of the aforementioned ideas. The problem: they blew out the fuel injection manifold, and Doc guesstimated that it would take a month to fix. Taking that major of a component from the in-the-mine DeLorean really could have screwed up the time line, though I expect that taking the gas might not have. So, at that point, there was not much they could do.

A possibly better idea: leave town.

And that wasn't even the fuel injection manifold that shot out. That was the distributor, I think. Keep in mind I've never seen the movie on anything other than a 13" CRT with a VHS tape as the source so it was kinda blurry.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this one. They were amazing in their day and age, but there are still people out there developing dead-serious stuff for them. What am I missing here? Should I get one and find out for myself?

Speaking from years of experience as a tech:

Through-hole mounted parts (including DVI connectors, for example) generally won't take a baking. They're meant for wave soldering at most and that's it.
Surface-mount parts will take a bake because that's how they're soldered in the first place.

Reflow temp for tin/lead solder is about 200C.
RoHS lead-free is about 260C.

The board should be as close to bare as possible when baking. That includes the heatsink/fan assembly. If it wouldn't be on the board while the solder paste is still in paste form, take it off during the bake. That includes large heatsink/fan assemblies on GPUs.

Heat guns work wonders when installed parts prohibit baking the board. Make sure you heat both sides of the board evenly, though, since they warp and BGAs hate that.

Then a lot has changed. We were cohesive back in the day (circa 2006).
