Sun

Got a pair of Sunfire V210 machines. Can't pull a display.

Do these machines start up in a console-only mode or something like that? They each have an ATI Radeon PCI card inside, but I get nothing on it.

Each machine has a 1GHz USIIIi, 1GB RAM and a 36GB HDD.

Even if they included the video cards, they may be configured to use a serial console, or to be run through the Lights Out Management (LOM) subsystem.More likely the latter I'd suspect, but I don't have one and haven't administered one.

The V120 can be managed from ethernet (ALOM) or via serial cable if this configuration is enabled. There is more information in the Administration Guide .

Once you get access to ALOM, you have to redirect the console to the graphics card:

1. With the server in standby mode: sc> bootmode forth
2. sc> poweron
3. When the ok prompt appears: setenv output-device screen:r1280x1024x60
4. the last part is reboot the server, from the ok prompt: reset

Be carefully this is what I did in a V120 and maybe there is something that must be different.

edit: One more thing, In a V120 setenv output-device ttya sets the console to the serial port but I don't know how to redirect to the ethernet ALOM.

Don't confuse the 210 with the 120. The 210s have the ALOMS you mentioned, the 120s have LOMs (pre ALOM).

It's pretty easy to make a serial cable for connecting to the console. Just cut the end off an old ethernet cable and solder on the appropriate DB connector (DB-9 for a PC, DB-25 if you happen to have another Sun).

Once you're into the serial console, you can set up the video card as output.

A couple things to note:

1) Assuming you have the XVR-100, it takes custom firmware to get console out on DVI.
2) You can't get console out on the monitor unless you connect a keyboard and mouse.
3) You get different behavior from the machine if you use a Sun Type 6 keyboard/mouse a generic USB stuff.
4) If you want to WANboot (like for installing OpenSolaris), you may need to upgrade your OBP version.
