Have you tried Zoontf's technique?

viewtopic.php?t=4241&highlight=wget+techpubs

It worked for me (before SGI revamped the site). I seem to remember having to remove a couple of commands to get it to run. YMMV.
ZoontF wrote: Well, after getting the software installed....

Can I assume that 'Rules Override' was needed to force the software to install? I just got a Cosmo board and I'm getting ready to try it with a V8.

I now know the sound of 'Fast Fans' on my Octane
ZoontF wrote: I dont know if you saw in the FastFans thread, but if you only have a V8 and Compress board, you might get fastfans to turn off if you move the compress board to the other XIO slot.

Yeah. Unfortunately, I'm fully loaded. I have a XIO FC card in the other slot. I may try dual QLA-2200's instead of the XIO FC to see if that kills the fastfan.

Hah! Get in line. Recondas has already laid claim to it if I decide to unload it
Jimmer my friend, get a Fuel 8) . Bang for the buck, they're pretty nice. Especially since some have been selling for around 300 euro lately. Even when (more) Tezro's start showing up on ebay, you just know the prices will be insanely high.
I had the same problem recently and had to kill the environmental monitoring. I don't have a contract though :(
Oskar45 wrote: Hmm, I'm not sure that killing env monitoring will save you. As I've noted in my original post of this thread, the messages are written by the kernel so they will be in the syslog even if eventmond is not running. Also, I suspect my box would have been killed anyway regardless of whether eventmond was running or not ...

Hmm.... well, only time will tell. So far, turning the monitoring off has saved me, but I may have to get a new mobo eventually :(
As superuser, try a

Code: Select all

# chkconfig | grep visuallogin

if visuallogin is set to "off", do a

Code: Select all

# chkconfig visuallogin on
Smoke installs all kinds of customized login icons and .profile, .cshrc, etc.... I don't know if a corrupt icon file or a broken .login would cause this sort of problem :?: . Assuming you're running a legitimate Smoke, I'd get on the horn with Discreet. They should be able to resolve the problem quickly. Since you're paying the big bucks for service, might as well use it ;)
Sorry I can't be of more help on this one. My knowledge of Discreet systems is very limited. I do know that their installer does override many of the default settings in IRIX. But 'visuallogin' is usually set to 'on' by default.
nekonoko wrote: Ah, another great tip - I'd tried a USB keyboard/mouse in the past but when they didn't work under IRIX I just assumed that support was incomplete.

I'm anxious to see if a Microsoft Intelimouse will also work. I'm currently using one through a USB->PS2 adapter. Any time I tried directly through the USB port, it didn't work.
Well, it would seem that I'm having issues with my USB InteliMouse. Last night, I got an error allong the lines of:

Code: Select all

WARNING: disabling mouse after 5 consecutive errors

This is the same mouse I was using through a PS2 adapter without any issues. Strange :?

**Edit**

If I unplug and re-attach the mouse, I get:

Code: Select all

NOTICE: usb_hid_attach() reattach of device on bus 0xa8000000016be4c0 path 1
WARNING: default_ms_setting():  could not set mouse idle interval to 0 - iface 0xa80000000097ce10 - usb err code 0x625f0016

Any ideas?

I'd love to find Umeshu in Quebec or Ontario, but again, it's the same problem. Kind of a low-brow drink so it doesn't get imported. Next trip back to Japan, I'm bringing back a suitcase full!

Sapporo is owned by Sleeman now, so it's easy to find in Canada, even in grocery stores. It's "brewed under license" with the same price tag that it used to sport when it was imported from Japan.
In Quebec we have the SAQ (Société des Alcools de Québec) - the LCBO equivalent - they carry one type of plum wine which isn't so great. Next trip down to the US or Southern Ontario, I'll have to keep an eye open for it. Thanks for the tip!

*edit*

I should add that Ontario has a much larger Japanese population than Quebec, so probably more demand for that sort of thing.

/usr/local/flexlm/licenses/DL_license.dat

for Effect's license. The sparks are probably in the same place.

This brings me to the start screen. I am starting to think that the Stone is ok & there is a problem with the Software?

Have you tried changing your init.cfg and your NTSC.cfg (or PAL, etc...) to point to a non-stone storage? Just to see if it's effect that's acting up or the stone. Then start effect and create a new project/framestore. Of course, comment out anything that's looking for a Stone in the cfg files.
What about Samurai Champloo ? Same Director as Bebop. Too bad there were only 24 episodes.

Rumor has it that July 3rd, '09 is the release date for the Japanese DVD. It's supposed to have English subs too. Not sure about a BluRay release.

I was reading through some of the comments and the the photographer responded that he likes to use HDRI . The results are quite stunning.
My wife taught beginner Japanese to adults here in Montreal for nearly a decade. Most students dropped out within the first year or so. I'd guess that less than 5% make it to the highest levels. Likely because they had some ludicrous motive for learning Japanese, like understanding anime/video games/dramas/music lyrics, or finding a Japanese girlfriend. I would say that you should ask yourself: "Why do I want to learn this language?" It's going to require one heck of a lot of effort to learn and gain any real fluency.

And as Pymble pointed out: Immersion is key. No amount of text book reading will make you fluent.

Just my 2¢.
In all honesty, Recondas has been maintaining the Fuel aggregator too (Thanks Dave!). I sold the Fuel and haven't used an SGI in at least two years. I do drop in here once-in-a-while to see what's going on, but I'm not really active anymore.

I'm with Jose. Wikify the aggregators and keep the individual threads going for discussion purposes.

I'd like to know how Recondas feels on the subject, as he's been maintaining the Fuel aggregator on my behalf. Would moving to the wiki be easier or not?
Can't vouch for the accuracy of this site , but

Why warrior? Goodness knows.

GL1zdA wrote: Does anyone know a cheap source of these ACARD SCSI to IDE/SATA bridges? Because the one that would be best for an SSD drive in the Indigo, the ARS-2000SUP , would cost me as much as I payed for my Fuel.

I too have been looking at the ARS-2000SUP for an Indy, but the $250- price tag + $X- for a hard disk is quite prohibitive.

If you don't mind using IDE, the ACARD 7720U does show up on Ebay from time to time. Ian has a writeup about installing one in an Indy . I've also tried the Yamaha V769970 in the Indy and was able to install IRIX onto the drive. I don't remember why I didn't keep that setup, aside from it not really fitting inside the chassis in any sensible way.

I wonder if the Yamaha could be connected to the SCSI ribbon cable and the other end of the adapter attached to an IDE extension cable which would then connect to the hard drive? In an Indy, that would theoretically allow you to bunch the Adapter and wires above the IDE drive which could then live in an regular drive sled instead of floating loose in the chassis.
GL1zdA wrote: I've seen that one, and it's designed for a 5.25 bay, so it's not very useful for me.

Unfortunately, so is the 7720U. Acard did make adapters that fit underneath the drive (ARS-2000FW), but they no longer seem to be in production.

I did find a website that sells them, but goodness knows if they have any in stock. Again, $150 is still a bit steep.

I may end up buying a Yamaha adapter and trying the extension cables in my Indy. I don't know if you could do the same in an Indigo - stuff the adapter in a second drive bay and run extensions between the two?
The link seems to be dead - not surprising as the post dates from 2005. Does anyone have a mirror?
joerg wrote: My machine is down because of power consumtion. But i was able to compile it from the sources a long time ago... so you be able to do the same.

Hi Joerg,

I tried compiling from source, but got this error:

Code: Select all

Error: Invalid format  revision (WHIRL::0.31:) for intermediate compiler file (/tmp/xxxxxxxxxxxxx)

I have absolutely no knowledge at all of compiling software, so that left me hanging. I'll give it another go.

In the end, I used the instructions found here to change the mac address.
Wow. Thank you very much Canavan!
If someone has one they don't need... I'm in the market for one.
For the OP, there's this:

http://www.artmix.com/j_home.html

SCSI to CF. Aimed at the Macintosh and NeXT crowd. He has both 2.5" adapters for laptops and 3.5" ones for desktops. Don't know if they'd work in an SGI.
Been trying to get the DINA VMware image converted to work in Parallels on OS X. It would seem that at least one forum member has got it working.

When I convert the image, Parallels complains that it doesn't recognize the guest OS, but converts it anyway (netBSD isn't officially supported in Parallels 6, but people have got it working). When I boot the image, it starts but freezes at the memory check. I've downloaded the VMware Fusion Demo just to be sure the DINA image is working and it is. I've tried adjusting the memory size in VMWare and re-converting the image, but nothing changes.

From the Parallels support site, I found a reference to disabling ACPI-support in the VM. This was an old post and refers to an earlier version of Parallels. I can't find any ACPI settings within Parallels or the config files for the DINA VM.

Any suggestions?
I'd just like to add to this. I've followed the wiki article to install IRIX from OS X. It's a very nice writeup. The only issues I had were:

After changing /etc/exports on OS 10.8.6 and rebooting, showmount -e still had no entry. I had to issue:

Code: Select all

sudo nfsd update

to get nfsd to read the exports file.

On the wiki page, there's also a typo here:
Start RSHD with:

Code: Select all

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDeamons/shell.plist

should be LaunchD ae mons

On 10.6.8, I found that creating the guest account with the command line was giving me problems. Using the Accounts preference pane was painless and seems to work just fine.

Hint: it's a wiki, anyone can edit it. It is made for users, by users.

Looked into it. I don't have permission to edit the wiki, nor will I be applying for permission. If you have access to edit the wiki, I'd be much obliged if you'd make the changes.
All gone.
